Asus to Debut US$500 iMac-Like All-In-One
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:52 PM on January 30, 2008
Asustek has announced it is adding an iMac-like all-in-one PC and a large-screen LCD TV with integrated Linux to its Eee PC line. The $500 all-in-one is expected to launch in September and should be seen as a companion to the Eee PC desktop model. The president of the Taiwan-based company revealed a few more juicy bits of info, as well.
Jerry Shen, head honcho of Asustek, confirmed that the E-DT desktop will be monitorless, and between US$200-300 when it comes out in April or May. The E-monitor all-in-one is aimed at the iMac market with a 19- to 21-inch screen and integrated TV tuner. Both these products will eventually share Intel's Shelton '08 platform. The E-TV will enter into the 42-inch-plus LCD TV class, while integrating the Linux PC functions of the Eee line. The aim is to keep its price no more than US$200 above its competitors.
Shen also broke the news that, contrary to rumour, there will be no touchscreen for the Eee PC. Apparently, their research showed that there was little demand for it. Fine, be that way. [DigiTimes]

Asus is really coming up with products that hit the sweet price point. I wonder if this little computer will have a Windows operating system or a customized linux one? I imagine most people would be connecting this to their TV, and so a slick customized OS would be a good addition.

Good, it's going to push some prices down. And a definitively "adios" to those bulky cases.

Sounds like what Pepper Computer is doing. Used to just be a tablet thingy, now they have a little laptop and an all-in-one desktop with a touchscreen, all running Linux. See:

Asus is ready to eat everyone for breakfast. First to really realize that crazy-high end stuff is only for those bleeding-edge gamers.

They really need a touchscreen. I have a toughbook that is old which I got for about the same price as an Eee but it is so big!

"Jerry Shen, head honcho of Asustek, confirmed that the E-DT desktop will be monitorless, and between $200-300 when it comes out in April or May."
Which means it'll probably be $500 when it's actually released.

September? It's January for Gods sake! Most computers will be less than $500 by then anyway, and most of America will be in the great depression part anyway.

Yep, it´s very dangerous to promise something that "will perhaps" be released in "one form or another" in ...oh...about one year or so...
It´s a typical "marked feeling" thing... We´re not "really sure"...but hype it and see if people fanboys us...then perhaps we´ll dare invest...
Meanwhile...watch the other companies release the one model after the other, and whoops! We should have released that one earlier.
Bummer...
(And yes...I´d love one too!)

@niel718: ...and people say the Eee has too small a keyboard to type on reliably. proof positive.

I would be interested in one with a touch screen. And much smaller. Like a 12 inch screen. Put it on my bed side table for checking my emails in the morning, and using it as a calendar as well as an alarm etc. TV tuner makes it even better for when I wanna watch tv in bed.
