Apple Adds Mail, Maps and More to iPod touch - for $20
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 4:34 AM on January 16, 2008
The little iPod touch is getting a much needed update to make it resemble the iPhone a little more closely. There will be a full-fledged Mail program, along with a Maps that gets location from Wi-Fi triangulation. It will also do web clips, stocks, weather, even notes. But it'll cost you. $US20 for this upgrade, baby. Apparently, that $US400 you coughed up for a 16GB just wasn't enough. [Macworld 2008 Keynote]
Official Press Release:
Apple Announces Major Software Upgrade for iPod touchMACWORLD SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today
announced a major software upgrade for the iPod(R) touch, making the best iPod
into even more -- the world's best Wi-Fi mobile device. iPod touch customers
already have the most advanced mobile web browser in the world with
Safari(TM), and now Apple is adding five more great mobile applications --
Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather and Notes. The iPod touch software upgrade also
includes new features such as Web Clips, a customizable home screen and
beginning today, the ability to watch iTunes(R) Movie Rentals. New iPod touch
products shipping from the factory will include the software upgrade and
existing iPod touch customers can get the software upgrade for $19.99 by
purchasing and downloading it from iTunes (http://www.itunes.com).
"These amazing new mobile applications make iPod touch not only the best
iPod, but the best Wi-Fi mobile device in the world," said Steve Jobs, Apple's
CEO. "With its revolutionary touch interface and software, plus its stunning
3.5 inch screen, iPod touch is evolving into the first mainstream Wi-Fi mobile
platform of the 21st century."
Mail on iPod touch is a rich HTML email client that fetches email in the
background from most POP3 or IMAP mail services and displays photos and
graphics along with the text of the email. Users can configure Mail for
Google's Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, .Mac Mail or most POP or IMAP based mail services
with just a few clicks.
Maps on iPod touch features the ability to automatically find your current
location using nearby Wi-Fi base stations*, and use it as a starting or ending
point for directions or to find local points of interest. Users can get
real-time traffic conditions, and view maps in map or satellite view, or a
hybrid view which combines map and satellite views so you can see major street
names overlaid on satellite imagery.
Stocks and Weather allow users to access live stock and weather reports at
their fingertips, and Notes lets you jot down information on-the-go using the
intelligent keyboard.
The iPod touch home screen can now be customized, allowing users to
reorder and add new icons, with support for up to nine different home screens
which they can easily flick between. With the new Web Clips feature, you can
even create custom icons on your home screen for your favorite websites. Web
Clips are a great way to easily track web sites that you frequently check such
as news, blogs, sports sites, movie listings and more.
With Apple's new iTunes Movie Rentals, movie fans can rent movies on their
computer, easily and quickly transfer them to their iPod touch, and watch them
anywhere on iPod touch's gorgeous 3.5 inch screen. Users can also now navigate
forward or backward through their movies by chapters, select alternate
language tracks and view subtitles, if available.Pricing & Availability
The software upgrade for iPod touch is available immediately. New iPod
touch products shipping from the factory will include the software upgrade and
existing iPod touch customers can get the software upgrade for $19.99 by
purchasing and downloading it from iTunes (http://www.itunes.com). iTunes
Movie Rentals are available in the US only. Further information for iPod touch
can be found at http://www.apple.com/ipod.*Availability and precision of Maps positioning features will vary

Does the fact that you need to resync your entire music/video library to install these additional applications make any sense to anyone?
I thought the 100+MB updates were a joke, this is insane, especially considering the speed at which the touch syncs.

What I'm really confused about is what the difference between 1.1.3 and 1.1.2 is?
Is it just support for the apps, if you choose to pay for them? If I install 1.1.3, but don't pay for the apps, is there anything new?
From what I recall, 1.1.3 cannot yet be jailbreaked, and nor can it be restored back down to 1.1.2 or below. Is that correct?
Because I don't particularly want to remove that option, particularly since I have no intention of paying Apple for these apps, unless there is a decent reason for doing so.
I think this would be a great time for Giz to print a piece which actually analyses the current state of affairs for the iPod Touch and all the ins and outs. Because I'm certainly confused!

What on earth would persuade a person to ditch their free unsupported and illegal apps for not-free supported programs? A sudden swarm of Ipod Touch malware conveniently timed to strike a fear of jailbreaking in the minds of the public.

Wow, this is definitely one of the lamest Apple nickle-and-dime scams ever.
I mean seriously, how did the iPod Touch even launch without an email application in the first place? ITS A PORTABLE INTERNET DEVICE WITHOUT EMAIL! It didnt even make sense.
Now 6 months later you FINALLY launch email and charge $20 for it - thats insulting.

Wow, Apple needs to hire a better PR group... @sidmuchrock: But it's not really 1.0 tech biting us in the ass, that's what pisses me off. These were apps - except the lyrics component I guess - that could have been on the touch from day 1. The tech was there and the apps existed. Apple decided to leave them off to differentiate it from the iphone; I get that, I was annoyed, but I understand. But now they are adding them to the new touches while making the earlier adopters pay for them? That makes no sense. Nothing about the hardware has changed...hence it's not 1.0 tech, but Jobs biting us in the ass and I for one just don't understand why.

You'd have to upgrade to 1.1.3 to get that stuff which would mean your jailbreak is gone and apparently you can't downgrade once you've upgraded to 1.1.3.

Boo hiss indeed.
Although I think jailbreakers are perfectly within their rights to do with their device what they please, it's infuriating that those of us who decided to be good little boys and girls and wait for third party support get slighted like this.
This is a lose-lose situation. Joe Blow consumer doesn't know enough to unlock his iPod, and doesn't care enough to spend $20. On the other hand, the techies who read this blog are going to know that they're getting a raw deal and are likely to turn to jailbreaking instead.
I'm sort of debating that option right now, actually.

I think you whiney bastards should take this as your last lesson in how Apple treats early adopters. If it didnt do what you wanted when it was released, why the hell did you buy it? It's a goddamn MUSIC PLAYER! How can you expect it to read your mail or tell you where the f*** you are? Does any other MP3 player do that? Apple has ADDED functionality to this device BEYOND what any reasonable person would expect from an MP3 player and now you get to pay a VERY F***ING MODEST $20 fee IF YOU NEED those apps. Apple gave you exactly what you paid for in the beginning, so quit acting like you DESERVE anything for free. Welcome to the new pace of technology. Get used to it.

This is extremely insulting to current users! It's not as if there's a marginal cost to them in letting us loyal customers download it. I'm not paying for it. The sooner they go back on this ridiculous policy the better.
Hopefully Steve will quickly become aware of our frustration and do the right thing. Otherwise lots of people will be be cautious about being early adaptors with Apple products.

@ALLCAPS: All the web stuff works over wifi, so you need a wireless network and a neighbor with no encryption. I'm still trying to find out if the google maps work without being on a wifi network. According to the apple site it claims it can find you anywhere based on wifi base stations. I don't think it's that hard to get out of the range of any hotspots so I'm confused about the whole thing.

@chillywilly: My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't complain if Apple didn't include the update for Free with new iPod touch purchases. Which is ironic because they would actually make more money if they charged everybody, new and old, to get the apps. Instead they opted to alienate early adopters, which will only lead to less people paying for the apps, and potential loss of customer loyalty.

I don't think we are complaining. Just pointing out that if new customers get them for free, why should those of us that already bought the product have to pay... especially when there were no hardware changes like the iPod 5.5G update 18 months ago.
On another note, can Notes sync to anything on the Mac?

@KenK: Boy I hope you aren't as ugly as you are stupid, for your sake. In order:
1. I got exactly what I wanted when I bought it, very happy with the purchase. Less than thrilled about Apple's decision to put back apps, that should have been there in first place, for some in a firmware update, but not for all.
2. It's actually not just a music player. That's what makes it different from say, every other music player (Archos excluded). It's a pocket-sized wireless internet device. On which I could check my email from day one. But other than that you're totally right.
3. This has nothing to do with technology moving forward. The technology in question existed the day the touch was released. That's what makes the decision to charge some for it a bit of a bummer.
But you're probably right, what with the caps and all.

As a PC user and a owner of iPod Nano and Shuffle, I'm not really interested in this $20 fee but I find it kinda lame. Expecially because the Touch isn't exactly cheap.
Anyway I've a question out of curiosity: are softwares like this available online? If they where for PC, you would almost immediately find them in some P2P net but how about those for iPods?
If so, I think most of the users will load their favorite torrent client and paid the right price in this case: zero.

The issue I have with this is that this functionality has been artificially removed. I was reading on Engadget and, apparently, it's not an OTA download. This software is already on your Touch; it was artifically locked down to fuck you over.
I invite people who have partaken fully of the Apple Kool-Aid to rationalize this for me. To me, it seems to be an incredible insult to the early adopters and loyal Apple people.
That's just me though; as a Windows user, I'm apparently incapable of having a valid opinion concerning anything Apple-related.

@weatherman: Not when the gadget shouldn't have been crippled in the first place.
@Riemannian: Completely agree. This is the dumbest PR move ever, and I don't think I'm every going to buy Apple stuff again when it first comes out. They should think about what would happen if more people started waiting for early-adopter-ripping-off to finish... they would never sell a thing.
@Rutter-UK: The apps may be amazing (and may be the reason why people will actually put down $20... including me), but was it really worth the $20/13 pounds when it comes for free on new devices that have the exact same hardware?

@KenK: Your expletives aside, you're almost correct. iPod buyers have always made the assumption that firmware and functionality updates are free. Apple did it for iPod gen 1 - 5. Now all of a sudden, they want to charge people. I think it's safe to assume that if this is the way they will be conducting their business from now on, they will lose a lot of early adopters. It just doesn't pay to buy early. I doubt very much that this was the intent of Jobs.
What I think might be the reason is how Apple account for their revenues. Since they are a SOFTWARE company, they have to charge for software that adds significant functionality. Unfortunately, regulations that were enacted after all the Enron et al fiasco has created this negative byproduct. This is why regulation can sometimes hurt the very same people they're trying to help. It's a double edge sword.
They don't have to charge iPhone users because they're recognizing the revenues over 2 years. They see it as a discount to existing users in their future revenue stream. The same with the iTouch. Even though the 16GB still costs $399, the unit is actually discounted by $20 due to the extra software functionality.
Anyway, I might be wrong but we'll see if Jobs reverses his position on this. I'm sure he's discussing it over with the CFO right now.

What the hell is apple doing? Seriously, this is just ridiculous. People help support Apple's products by buying them when they are still new (which they REALLY need in order for them to ever continuously sell a product), and then they just f*** everyone who SUPPORTED Apple over the next minute. What kind of business strategy is that? If ANYTHING it should be the other way around... given to all people who bought the thing early and make the rest pay.
To Gizmodo: write a ranting article about this stuff (isn't the first time apple screwed over early adopters). If I remember correctly, didn't it say that Jobs reads Gizmodo himself?

BAD, really BAD!
1. iPhone, iTunes and AppleTV have free upgrades. ipod touch hasn't.
2. Mac os x tiger to leopard full upgrade (300 applications never used before) costs $10. ipod touch upgrade (only 5 applications, 4 already used by iphone) $20.
3. If apple dont want to develop software free, progammers from around the world like me want to do it, like hackers do it with jailbreak. Even though, i don't expect that sdk will be free.
4. New ipod touches have the 5 applications free, why do i have to pay for them if i bought the touch 3 weeks ago? what's the difference, the time?. Sorry for bought in christmas, i though it was a good gift.
5. The problem is not the money, sure we all can pay that. We support Apple when some bugs appear sending mails to the company so they can build better devices with software. This is the way of them to say thanks.
6. I still believe in buying software but...with jailbreak i can get all 5 apps together for free. So, i have been wrong all this time? sure i am.
Steve's favorite words: "Amazing", "Gorgeous", "Beautiful", "Very, Very Cool"... no matter he said, this character is what matters to us: "$".
I can say 5 more but i think you get the idea. I was saving money for a macbook pro, maybe i'll wait a few years more or maybe it's the time to say goodbye to Apple. they took a bad direction the last 3 years, it seems that they dont want to change the course.

@pocketcowboy:
If part of the $20 is going to 3rd party licensing fee, then why not make all Touch users pay for it. Why do new owners get it for free. If it was a Software purchase for all Touch owners, then fine.
If you bought your iPod a week before MacWorld, and choose not to return it and buy a new one, then you would have to pay the $20. return your old iTouch if you can and buy the new one.

I would recommend everyone who can return their iPod Touch, do so. And purchase a new one with the apps. Why not have a flood of used iPod returned from stores to Apple. hopefully they will change their mind. I would return mine, but damn, Apple only have a 14 day return policy. I don't usually comment here - just quietly read and agree/disagree (as I am sure do many.) But this in incredible. Really?! I am speechless. I can almost understand the $$ for the apps, but for the general interface updates(icon placement etc)?! Insanity. I have been an on-the-fence apple fan but I think that may have come to an end. Like many I have purchased an ipod every generation. I came near to getting a zune this time around mainly because of wireless sync (that I'd pay $20 for) and because m*soft has shown so far that they will support their previous generation hardware. But I was wooed by the touch and it's possibility of being an an update-able and amendable platform. Geeze, do I feel like a fool! What a bunch of B*S!

I have a touch and bought the $20 upgrade. Sure I would rather it be free, but $20 isn't a ton of money, and when I bought it I was happy with it's feature set. I didn't EXPECT it to have these apps (since it was specifically marketed as not having them)
I guess there are a lot of entitled people out there that think that they are entitled to everything, and have to offer up nothing to get it. A lot of posts on gizmodo are like that.

Ok, lemme get this straight. Early adopters of the Ipod Touch, like myself, have to pay $20 for 5 new apps that are FREE for people who are buying new Ipod Touches from this day forward? I hope everyone at Apple realizes that this is nothing but Corporate GREED at work in its highest form. How is that fair that your are charging for nothing more than a Firmware Update?! These apps should have been there from day ONE! And Iphone users get all this for FREE as well? Oh, and Apple TV users are getting a HUGE HUGE software update for free that will give them the ability to rent movies from Apple?! I don't get it. WHY IS APPLE PENALIZING EARLY ADOPTERS OF THE IPOD TOUCH?!
Tell Steve this was the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm off the Jailbreak my Ipod Touch to get these applications for FREE. I can't believe I waited so long thinking that Apple would take care of its loyal customers!

The killer was including it with the new ones. Seriously, you upgrade the stock software on a system, and then offered a crippled version of it to everyone already using it?
For once, Apple needs to look at Microsoft. Seriously, if MS can give everyone with a Zune an upgrade when they released the newer ones.
