62-in-1 Card Reader / Hub: The Only Thing it Can't Do is Pleasure You (Or Can It?)
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:00 PM on January 12, 2008
This 62-in-1 USB hub can read just about any memory card you can throw at it, and maybe some that don't even exist. Seriously, I had no idea that there were even this many formats out there. It also features an internal 3.5" connect bay, USB, Firewire and SATA slots, and audio in / out. And the best part is that it only costs $US39.99 —which seems a little too good to be true. Nonsense is all it is and usefullness is a limitation. Every multi-bay reader is seen as a local drive on a Windows XP or Vista computer. How can there be 61 readers? It is not possible to have 63 drives on a computer as there are only 26 drive letters. Someone need to explain what they are talking about.

Ummm, I'll be shocked if this thing actually features a 3.5" connect bay. Rather, I think they mean that it fits into a 3.5" drive-bay on your computer case. The product page, though, doesn't even seem to get it right, calling it an "internal" bay -- internal bays are where hard drives go; external bays are the ones that need access to the outside world (like card readers and floppy drives).
Aside from that, this device does indeed seem to cover every useful connection I can think of.

It lacks an important feature - a smartcard slot, which should be pretty standard feature on such internal card readers.

Honestly, why has this not drawn comments? Now all it needs is a 5 1/4 inch drive for some retro flare.

Ummmmm.... I bought one of these about 18 months ago at a computer expo for about $19...it is a great add on, but mine can only handle 57 cards. Damn, time to upgrade again.

they mean 62 counting every variation of each slot...so, each slot supports 10 formats...
oh, and it does have a smart card slot...look at the labels.

If you need a drive with more than 2 different media types, then you're seriously not paying much attention.
Most normal people pick one or two types and run with that.

@Blue_Mountain:
You all are misunderstanding this far fetched claim of these multiple card readers. In reality, they are just including minor different iterations of cards as different formats such as counting micro sd, mini sd, sd, sdhc as 4 separate formats. You can easily find extreme card readers such as this for cheaper at places like newegg or tigerdirect. Here's a 64 card reader for just 14.99. [www.tigerdirect.com]

@terranaut: That is incorrect. eSATA provides higher signal levels for the long(er) cable, but can not power the drive over the cable.

@myotheralt: eSATA is designed for external use and so, provides power from the computer to the attached device in the same cable, whereas SATA was primarily designed for internal use and has separate power and data cables.

All these turds STILL don't do SDHC. I wish they'd just make a 10 in one that does SDHC instead of a 64 in one that claims to read everything.

@scoobydoo: not even. eSATA is plain SATA with a differently keyed connector and shield ground for EMI compliance.

@scoobydoo: Id bet it does do SDHC. If you are on windows its simply a driver issue. If you need I can send you the link to the MS hotfix. Its coming out in SP3 but if you want SDHC now you can install the hotfix.
I know it works because with the hotfix my year old dell with built in Recoh SD reader reads SDHC.

According to the product page the USB, Firewire, Audio and SATA ports are routed to the motherboard using the corresponding cables, which aren't included in the kit.
In order to use those features you need a computer that already has all those available on motherboard (and thus likely on back panel of PC), plus you need to buy $50 worth of cables to hook this hub up to front of case?
So apart from the 7-in-1 card reader, the only benefit you'd get out of this is the ability to plug your E-SATA/SATA and Firewire cables into the front instead of back of computer (in case you can't already).

cable management on that thing must be a nightmare. at least they aren't featuring technology more than 5 years old or so on there (but seriously, who uses MMC, smart media, or micro drives anymore?)

I think these things need adaptors to read certain cards. For example, it my 15 in 1 can't read the micro sd cards (which it says it can on the box (with a tiny *)) without a micro sd ->sd card adaptor.

I think they are counting all the different size memory cards to get the 62 number. A floppy would really be a nice option since most computers don't come with them anymore. That would be good for a business like PC repair shop or printing place. The Ultra looks good too, but I'm too lazy to research both to find out which is best. Oh laziness, why doest thou vex me so!

I can't believe you're still discussing what this is...
62-in-1 card reader - It reads a total of 62 types/formats of CF, SD/MMC, MS and SM/SD memory cards. You will see 4 "drives" (in XP at least), one for each physical card reader.
SATA/e-SATA - Basically, e-SATA is the external connector type, SATA the internal type. The e-SATA cables do NOT provide power and are usually longer (up to 2m) with a stronger, more-secure connection, the best ones snapping in. e-SATA is standardized to 300MB/sec just as SATA2.
Cables - If you look at all the pictures, you'll see that the cables DO come with the unit. Nobody would sell a unit like this without cables. It also comes with a white and silver-ish face-plate.
Since it's capable of e-SATA, I'm assuming that the SATA ports are SATA2, but I can't find that info.

Ah HA, they missed a big one in their spec sheet. It doesn't support new CF UDMA format that is supported in the new Nikon D3 and D300.

That makes me want to smash! SMASH!
