4GB Asus Eee Finally in Five Colours
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 2:14 AM on January 13, 2008
Asus promised us long ago that their Eee PCs would be available in a variety of colours, but for whatever reason (we're guessing that reason is the Eee PC's successful sales) Asus has taken their time colourising the $US399 Eee PC that most of us want, instead offering us only the $US299 and $US350 Surf models in more colours. But fret no more, as Asus has just announced that their $US399 version is getting released in "Pure White, Galaxy Black, Blush Pink, Lush Green and Sky Blue." Do those adjectcolours look familiar? They should, since they are exactly the same as what's available on the Surf. Expect them in stores any day now. [mobiletechreview]

@dambo29:
I don't see how those colours like other colours of the same gender in a romantic way.

I still really want one of these in black to tinker with, but alas I'm short on justification...

The Eee is approaching a level of over saturation to me. It is not showing so many new cards that im interested in, and the price point still feels all wrong. But, yet, i still want one.

Black and white have officially hit the "gay" list.
Alright, I replied. Have your fun?

Hell, I'd go for a pink one.. like that color better than the white I currently have.
As for why these lighter colors? Have you SEEN the default interface these come with? It's perfect to bring women into computing by making it feel like an appliance more than a computer. Especially in conjunction with the smaller "female-finger-friendly" keyboard. This seems a perfect way to get men to buy them for their ladies -- especially just in time for Easter (isn't easter a big 'electronic gift-giving' season?).
Plus, it's what Apple's done successfully with their iPod line: don't necessarily change much up but offer an array of colors and people with more money than brains (cf: republicans) will snap them up.
DJDare, go to eeeuser.com and see if anyone has tried what you're proposing. There's an aggressive community of hackers there doing some very interesting things to their eees.

My only gripe is it doesn't have a draft N card, does anyone know how easy that is to upgrade in this laptop? I really want to get one for my wife, just so she has something to get on ichc, ontd, and cute overload, and I don't have to worry about her f'n up the mbp. But I want to get an airport extreme, and i wanted to run it in N only.... aq

@red: He wants to run a wireless N network, which is faster than the more-common wireless G stuff. Wireless N networks can support G devices, but the entire network will take a speed hit to do so. So he wants to upgrade the EEE to N.
Everything else...just don't worry about it. ;)
In other news, making it run on an N network is probably no more complicated than plugging in a wireless N usb adapter, but make sure there's Linux drivers out there.

Aside from a nurse that I know that would snap up the pink one I think the rest of the colours are pretty nasty. I mean, pastels, what the heck were they thinking?
Now if they were available in candy-apple red, that would be cool. I'd almost be tempted to get one if they weren't so overpriced.

Amusingly, the pink one is often sold cheaper than the other colors in Hong Kong.

I actually think the green one looks kind of cool and one friend of mine would almost certainly pick the pink one. Of course, I am more interested in what it can do for me and for what price, so while color options are nice, what I really want to see are lower prices at the low end and slightly better specifications at the high end (e.g., a slightly higher-resolution display or longer battery life). Hopefully the success of the Eee PC will enable Asus to bring the price down a bit, at least on the low end.

The green one would go great with a Gollum skin I saw in Low Yat Plaza the last time I was home in Malaysia. I wanted to get my DS skinned with him but didn't have time that day.

Does connecting G on an N router slow everyone else down, or is that what MIMO is about?

@strider_mt2k: I've heard it does, I know that with the Airport Extreme can be switched to N only, and if you have to switch it back over it limits the range and speed, at least according to the reviews I've read online. And to answer my own question for anyone else who was wondering, people have been able to crack it open and swap out the b/g wireless PCIe card for a b/g/n card. I'm looking into something that also does a and bluetooth if possible. I would love to have bluetooth, just because my wife could rock a bluetooth mouse then.
The only bummer is that you can't run the Linux OS that it comes with (not even going to try to spell the name), but everyone that's upgraded to N was doing so either in XP or Ubuntu, both nice options, but I was really hoping I could stay in their OS, because of how light it is on resources, to me, installing XP on this machine defeats the purpose of having something like this.
Lots of interesting development going on at eeeuser.com though, really cool stuff, people soldering into usb connections internally on the mb, and they found usb hubs small enough to mount inside, then they up the storage using thumb drives, install bluetooth, etc etc etc. Really want one now, but I don't even wanna give it to my wife, I just wanna play with it myself. There has even been talk of making a tablet out of the machine by getting a touchscreen, pulling the components out of the case, and making a new case for everything. Great user base there.

@x23: not to blow a hole in your thinking here, but uhh Al Gore is on the board of directors, and Steve Jobs is a hippy. These aren't generally the types of people I associate with the republican party. Although I may be bias since I am a conservative (economically at least), and I'm typing this on a MBP.

A pointless exercise in non-convergence. You either need a full-sized screen and keyboard or you need the portability of a smart phone.

That's the stupidest argument I've ever heard.
Liberals afraid of change? Mac users as young republicans?
Oh wait I pick up the sarcasm there. DJDARE wasn't reading between the lines.
lol reading is fundamental!

While I would be hard pressed to find a reason to buy the Eee PC, as I just recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite Pro U300, I must admit I really want the "Galaxy Black" Eee PC. Either way, I'll wait for an upgraded version... 4GB just isn't enough, no matter how I look at it.
Still, the Eee PC is a neat piece of technology. The more portable we can make technology, the better, in my opinion. If more research was done in the right fields, that size and weight could be even further reduced, I think.
I look forward to seeing what portable computing looks like in another ten years.
