Samsung i80, i100 and S1060 Digital Cameras

Posted by Jesus Diaz at 11:36 PM on January 25, 2008

samsung_newbies.jpgSamsung will release three new compact digital cameras this autumn: the Samsung i80, i100 and S1060. The first comes with an all aluminum case with clean retro 70s, almost Bondesque looks, 8.1 megapixel sensor, 3x digital zoom, 3-inch LCD and integrated MP3 player. The i100 pushes the sensor to 10.2 and adds Dual Image Stabilisation system and, for some reason, travel information from 30 countries, all while keeping a similar retro look. [Samsung]

P-Per Cellphone Concept is too Perfect to be True

Posted by Haroon Malik at 11:25 PM on January 25, 2008

pper.jpgThose fellows at the Chocolate Design Agency have come up with another smashing concept. This time they have gone to work on creating the best phone, ever. The design is modelled around the same E-Paper Slap Bracelet we saw earlier, but this time the e-paper system—four layers of sustainable material, and an Organic Radical battery—is put to use in the P-Per mobile phone concept, which shows a transparent display for camera mode and a browser that spans the entire surface of the display. Checkout the video after the jump to see what all the fuss is about.

High School Student Builds 100% Wooden Bike

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:24 PM on January 25, 2008

Woodbike1.jpg16 year-old Marco Facciola built this completely wooden bike for a school project, managing to avoid using any metal at all. Yes, this wooden wheeled wonder even has a chain and gearing made of wood, held together with wooden joints and glue. The detail in the free-wheeling ratchet and spacers between the chain links, pinned with tiny dowels, is amazing. Marco had to complete this as a non-academic project for his International Baccalaureate, and inspiration came from his grandfather, forced to make wooden wheels for his bike during the war due to rubber shortages. Bring the Sweet Stench of Death to Your Desk With More Gothic Peripherals

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:41 PM on January 25, 2008

GothPeriph1.jpgThis week's bad-taste webcam has been joined by more goth gear—this time a keyboard, mouse and mouse mat combo. Using the same recipe (take a perfectly ordinary set of computer stuff, liberally sprinkle with skulls, bones, rocks, random greenery and snakes) this time Evergreen has upped the gravestone action. Definitely one for peripherals-of-darkness fans, and any of you whose vehicle has the sticker: "If The Hearse Is Rockin', Don't Come Knockin'" displayed on its rear end. [Akihabaranews]

Sony Reduces Blu-ray Lasers' Size and Cost

Posted by Haroon Malik at 8:38 PM on January 25, 2008

Blu-Ray%20Smaller%20Stronger%20GI.jpgWith Blu-ray destroying the competition, the availability of cheaper units is going to be a big part in the future success of the format. That is why Sony's recent success in shrinking the basic Blu-ray reader/writer module is a turn for the better. The new modules will pave the way for thinner drive bays and cheaper players.

Car On A Stick Is Urban Transport Concept by Day, Street Light by Night

Posted by Addy Dugdale at 8:10 PM on January 25, 2008

caronsticksq.jpgRoss Lovegrove's Car on a Stick concept takes multi-tasking to extremes. The latest idea from the former Apple and Sony designer, who has quite a penchant for solar-powered thingies is a solar-powered transport pod that can carry up to four people, plus shopping bags, that can be stored in an ingenious fashion.

Samsung G600 Coming to Australia

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 4:37 PM on January 25, 2008

After months of being told "probably not" from Samsung, they announced last night that they'll be releasing the G600 5 megapixel cameraphone in Australia in March. It will be available through Optus stores "on an affordable plan". I'll be getting my hands on one in a couple of weeks - you guys will be the first to know what I think.

BeoLiving: How You'd Live If You Were Rich

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 1:49 PM on January 25, 2008

BeoLiving-1.jpgThere's nothing subtle about Bang and Olufsen. They go out of their way to grab your attention, sometimes by outlandish or inspired design, other times by a price tag that would make James Packer whistle.

So it's no surprise that their recently renovated flagship store on Oxford Street in Paddington is the same. From the speakers outside playing the latest music to passersby to the bright red wall which catches the light reflecting off cars headlights and therefore people's attention, everything is meant to stand out, loud and proud. Like Beckham. Or a Big Brother Housemate.

Inside, there's all the latest B&O products, from their new entry model LCD TVs (for a paltry $4K) to their incredible new Serenata phone, which looks and feels like sex in circuitry form. But the main attraction in the store is what Bang and Olufsen calls "BeoLiving".

A Chair That Walks For You: Supreme Laziness Doesn't Come Cheap

Posted by Sean Fallon at 12:48 PM on January 25, 2008

walking_chair.jpgChairs that can walk are nothing new, but this is the first version that I have seen that you can actually buy. The mechanics in this eight-legged chair are sophisticated enough to move a "passenger" around the room, but there is no information available about how one would actually steer this thing, how fast it can walk and how much weight it can lift. These are things I would like to know before I drop 15,000 Euros, (or $25,000) on a chair with no cushion. [Product Page via Gizmowatch via Slashgear]

MacBook Air Review

Posted by Brian Lam at 12:47 PM on January 25, 2008

IMG_3537.JPGThe MacBook Air is driving me insane. I want it like no other hardware. It's thin, yeah, ok, we know this. And many power users have been bitching for more: 3G, bigger storage, more USB ports, and an internal drive. If you feel that way, this computer isn't for you. I'll go ahead and call it the most simple, focused, and beautiful laptop ever. And the MacBook Air's shortcomings matter no more than the discomfort that fashionistas endure while wearing high heels, or car fanatics do when they have to fill up their tanks twice a week in their 5MPG sports cars. It just doesn't matter to those who are smitten. For the rest of you, here are the facts.

Flying Stick Camera: Rub It Between Your Palms

Posted by Sean Fallon at 12:30 PM on January 25, 2008

flying_stick.jpgPhotographers interested in taking endless shots of themselves with their arms outstretched will surely love this flying stick camera concept from designer Tsunho Wang. Just "rub the stick" between your palms and use the built up energy to send the camera whizzing into the air. Once airborne, the camera will automatically take a series of photographs at set intervals. No specs were mentioned regarding the stick cam, but seeing as how it is a concept that won't see the light of day, it probably doesn't matter all that much. [Yanko Design]

Bazooka Camo ATV Speakers For Hunters: Because Deer Love Loud Country Music

Posted by Sean Fallon at 12:00 PM on January 25, 2008

bazooka_speakers.jpgThese 6.5" Bazooka "Outdoor Tubbie" speakers are hilarious on numerous levels. First off, they are designed for hunters—which is why they are camouflaged. The idea is to hook them to your ATV roll bar, which I can only presume is useful for those interested in hunting wild game while blaring music. Uh, I don't know much about hunting, but I do know that thundering out of the brush, guns a' blazin' with duelling banjos blaring from your ATV is unlikely to result in a successful kill. However, if you are interested in picking them up, you can do so starting this March for US$449.95. [Product Page via AudioJunkies]

How Camera Lenses Are Made: In Honour of PMA 2008

Not only was this thin thing amazingly easy to dissemble, it was even gorgeous on the inside. Here are the details and, more importantly, pictures.

Rock Band Standalone Instruments Get Ship Dates, Price

Posted by Jason Chen at 10:00 AM on January 25, 2008

The days of only being able to buy Rock Band instruments in a gigantic pack are about to come to an end as the creators just announced dates and pricing on their instruments. The drums will be US$79 on February 12 and the guitar will be US$59 on April 1. The PlayStation 3 version of the guitar will work on both PS3 and PS2, and will also get the US$59 price tag. There's no announcement for the USB microphone, however, but you can rig up your own mic by using a standard USB mic or just the Xbox Live headset and a controller.

AU: Man, I'd just love it if we had a release date in Australia... Of course, I'm sure our good friends at Kotaku AU will update us when that happens.

I Tube, You Tube, We All Tube With Sony

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 9:58 AM on January 25, 2008

NSCGC1.jpg

YouTube is one hell of a bandwagon. Not only are regular folk getting on it to post inane and/or embarrassing clips of themselves to share with the rest of the world, but companies are starting to come up with products designed specifically for this use.

Take the Sony NSCGC1 "Net Share Cam" from Sony. It's been around for a couple of months now, and its main purpose in life is to shoot video for the web. It doesn't even have to be YouTube - any video or photo sharing site is catered for.

First MacBook Air Benchmarks

Posted by Adrian Covert at 9:08 AM on January 25, 2008

01_macbook_air_benchmark.jpg We benchmarked the MacBook Air against the MacBook and MacBook Pro to see how it held up comparatively. Predictably, the MacBook Pro outperformed its counterparts in the majority of our tests. But the MacBook Air (1.6 GHz Intel, 2 GB RAM) went toe-to-toe with the MacBook (2 GHz Intel, 1 GB RAM) in many of our tests, falling just short in most. And it even bested the MacBook and MacBook Pro in one test.

Data Center Cabling Masterpieces

Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:30 AM on January 25, 2008

cable_art1.jpgHaving built many a PC in my day, I have a tremendous appreciation for cable organization done right. Generally, I think most data centres are organized halfway decently, but there are quite a few examples out there that are truly hideous. The gallery below should provide a little inspiration for anyone with a bag full of zip ties and a desire to keep things neat. In fact, the blend of colours, clean lines and the layouts come together in such a way that it could almost be considered art. However, the image after the break is a completely different story.

Toyota's In-Car System Watches for Sleepy Eyes (What About Asians?!)

Posted by Jason Chen at 8:00 AM on January 25, 2008

Toyota_Eye%20Monitor.jpgToyota's invention of sticking a camera in the dash of a car to monitor the eyelids for dozing off seems pretty smart, even if the concept isn't entirely new. The system would look at your upper and lower eyelids and see whether it's "properly open", which Jalopnik guesses is about 60 to 100% of max. Our question is: would the sensor beep nonstop if an Asian got into the car? Probably not. Seeing as Toyota is Asians, we think they probably took the squinty-factor into account.

AU: looks like the US is a little off the ball here - we covered this on Wednesday. AU rocks!

iPod Scroll Wheel Illumination Patent Shows Two Finger Control

Posted by Jason Chen at 7:00 AM on January 25, 2008

ipodpatent.gifApple's in the midst of shoving multi-touch into every single thing they own, which means that this patent for a two-fingered iPod scroll wheel seems quite likely to come to fruition. Besides allowing you to do the "Churchill", the patent details an illumination of the wheel as your finger passes by, possibly making a comet or a little pie shape under your pointer. Pretty neat to see what you're doing in the dark, but ultimately just only a slight upgrade to what they already have. Mmmm, pie. [iPodNN]
