Colour Light DVD Turns Your TV into a Cheap Mood-Light

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:57 PM on January 24, 2008

color_light_dvd_tv2.jpgIf you can't afford a Philips Aurea, can't buy a Living Colours lamp yet and you need some mood light for that "special evening," then slot this 20 minute DVD into your player and your TV will glow in a whole spectrum of colours. If you like things red and hot, or cool and blue, then you can pause on a particular frame, or just leave it on repeat for a slow psychedelic effect. From Japan's Kyouei Design, the disc is region-free and US$19. In other words: a complete rip-off. [Designboom via Technabob]

Samsung Thinks They "Know What Women Want," Releases Two Fashion Phones

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:00 PM on January 24, 2008

SGHL310320.jpgAccording to Samsung, the SGH-L310 and SGH-L320 are specially made for women because "they know what women want:" mobile phones with "female applications" inside like a shopping list function, a perfume-matching system and a calorie counter. Of course there's techy stuff like Bluetooth, 2 mega pixel cameras and concealed external screens too, but the slightly patronizing PR is just too much for us to take.

AQUOS X Is World's Thinnest Production TV, Says Sharp

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 7:44 PM on January 24, 2008

sh1_11.jpgThe new Sharp AQUOS X series are only 34.3mm deep, which is thinner than their old IFA bags and, according to Sharp, makes them the world's thinnest LCD televisions in production. All of them have full high definition resolution at 37, 42 and 47 inches. What is Sharp's thinning trick this time? Among other things, all the tuner and in/out connections are in a separate box, which is connected to the panel by a single cable. The rest of the specs look very good.

Wake Up For Your Daily Photo Shoot

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 6:20 PM on January 24, 2008

AJL308lores.jpgOne of the more interesting alarm clocks I've seen in a while has just gotten an Australian release. The Philips Photo Clock Radio wakes you up not only with the sounds of the buzzer, radio or "sounds of nature" (We hope it's not the first "sound of nature" we're thinking of when we wake up in the morning), but also with photographs of your loved ones, arched nemesis or porn. In fact, anything you pop on an SD card will be displayed on the 7-inch screen, including video.

It also doubles as a calendar and lets you set dual alarm times. It will be available in mid-February for the sum of $260.

Fujifilm's Advanced S100FS Drops the Megapixels to Pick Up Light

Posted by Brian Lam at 4:00 PM on January 24, 2008

S100FS_LEFT_FRONT_WIDE.jpgI'm a fan of Fujifilm's "Most advanced" S100FS, even though its 11MP rating is less than the F series point and shoot they just released. Why? Because screw MP ratings! By dropping the MP count even further to 6, it can hit a light sensitivity of ISO 6400; drop it to 3MP and you've got an astounding 10,000 ISO. That's a better use of spare sensor space than goosing up to a MP rating good for poster sized prints. Although it borrows heavily from Fuji's S5 Pro camera in the feature department, this camera has no direct predecessor. The FS in the S100FS's model name stands for Film Substitute.

Canon Expands Rebel Alliance With Live View 12-Megapixel EOS XSi

Posted by Wilson Rothman at 3:00 PM on January 24, 2008

The rumours are true. Canon's took power features from the high-end EOS models and creature comforts from the PowerShot line, and merged them into the 12.2-megapixel EOS Rebel XSi DSLR (AU: It's called the EOS 450D over here, and is situated somewhere in the grey area between the 40D and the 400D), with Live View LCD view-finding, a 3" LCD screen with 230,000 pixels, and the DIGIC III processor found in nearly every new Canon model. There will be two kits, body only for US$800 and one with a starter 18-55mm lens for US$900. Jump for full details and more pics.

AU: We're looking at an April release date for this in Oz, although RRP is still yet to be set (hence the US prices above).

Canon Drops Nukes In Camera Price War: $180 PowerShot A590 IS and Its Two Little Brothers

Posted by Wilson Rothman at 3:00 PM on January 24, 2008

Canon_New_A_Series.jpgCanon's PowerShot A590 IS is not just a budget camera. Hell, it's not even a "no-compromise" low-end camera. On paper, it looks a hell of a lot like something that would've cost $800 not long ago, but now it's a ridiculously low $279 (AU: That's a local price, right there). If that's not enough of a slap in the face of its competitors, Canon is also offering two more A Series siblings, the A580 at $229 and the multicoloured A470 at—seriously—$179.

It's about time I introduce myself...

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 2:00 PM on January 24, 2008

nick copy.jpgSo, it's been four days since I started here at Giz, and I've been so busy trying to get myself sorted out that I've overlooked introducing myself. Well no more!

The name's Nick Broughall. Some of you might recognise that byline if you're a reader of Australian T3 magazine — I was editor there for the past 18 months, reviews editor before that and staff writer before that. I've also done a spot of tech freelancing around the place. Think Rolling Stone, OPSM, Paperplane, and probably a few others I've forgotten about and you'll get the idea.

So why should you care? Well, I know you lot are a pretty dedicated lot. You love gadgets as much as me. You hate missing out on the latest product just because you're Australian too. My aim is to give you all the best local gadget info, plus keep you informed of all the overseas goings on.

I also want to build the Australian Giz community... some of you guys are awesome commenters (applause). But there's more of you lurking in the corners, maybe to shy to make your opinions heard. Well I want to hear them. In the coming weeks, look out for some great competitions for commenters, plus I also have a few ideas for  some Giz-reader get-togethers.

It's going to be an awesome ride. Feel free to tell me what you like about the site, what you don't like, tips, tricks, ideas, or if you simply want to send me money. I'm all for receiving anonymous cheques, by the way.

E-Paper Slap Bracelets: Like the 80's...Except Different

Gigantic 500x White iPod Earbuds Not a Joke

Pentax K20D DSLR Gets Official With 14.6 Megapixels, Live View and Expanded Dynamic Range

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 9:00 AM on January 24, 2008

Pentax's long-rumoured US$1299 K20D is a shot square at Canon's 40D and the
Nikon D300
. Besides price, it bests both in pure megapixel count—14.6 effective, with a new CMOS sensor developed with Samsung—and rocks the same top 3200 ISO (6400 expanded) as the D300. (Is it as impressively noiseless though?) Expanded Dynamic Range promises more contrast-y shots, plus image stabilisation is built into the camera's body. Like the 40D and D300 it adds a live viewfinder, but it's a bit tinier, 2.7 inches to their 3, with less than a third of the D300's resolution, so the screen won't be nearly as gorgeous. It comes up a little short against the competition in a couple of other ways, too.
Update: If you're really drooling over the K20D, have a look at the new Pentax-produced walkthrough video below.

AU: Just got back from the Australian Pentax launch... local pricing will be $1,999 for the body plus an 18-55mm lens. Should be available now / very soon...

Pentax K200D Swipes K10D's 10.2-Megapixel Imager for Hot Entry-Level DSLR

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 9:00 AM on January 24, 2008

Pentax's previously peeked and rumoured K200D also officially exists today, bringing with it a 10.2MP hand-me-down sensor from the K10D, Pentax's now-outdated prosumer model. It's on the same strata as Nikon's D80, with same MP count (its sensor is a smidge smaller, 23.5 x 15.7mm to the D80's 23.6 x 15.8mm), 12 bits/channel RAW and 100-1600 ISO range, though the K200D is a bit cheaper ($US800 w/ lens), has a bigger screen (2.7 inches) and shoots a slightly slower continuously (2.8FPS to 3). Like the K20D, it has Expand Dynamic Range for poppier images, and image stabilisation ("shake reduction" in Pentax-speak) built into the camera's body.

Interestingly, they chose not to trickle down live view as a differentiator, which could hurt depending on whether or not Canon puts it in their rumoured EOS 400D successor. Of course, this could indicate makers writ large are leaning against doing so for now to keep some distance between entry-level and pricier models. And the specs are after the jump:

AU: For those keen on the knowledge, we're looking at a $1,199 RRP, which will include the Pentax 18-55mm lens

Pentax Optio S12 Is the Tiniest 12-Megapixel Around

Posted by Wilson Rothman at 9:00 AM on January 24, 2008

Pentax_OptioS12_Silver_Front.jpgWe're not saying pixel count matters anymore, or that anyone can tell the difference between an 8-megapixel shot and a 10-megapixel shot anyway, but if you want something unusual to brag about, the Pentax Optio S12 is certainly unique. The $US280 camera has a 12-megapixel sensor not a whole lot else—that tiny little 5-oz. body measures 3.6" x 2.2" with a thickness of just under an inch. As you can expect, it's got just a 3x optical zoom lens and a rather nice 232,00-pixel 2.5" LCD, but sadly, in spite of its massive image sensor it only records VGA movies. I'm still trying to guess what it would be best for, besides cocktail party conversation, besides making massive poster-sized images of close-up subjects on the fly. Detailed specs and another picture after the jump. [Pentax]

Pentax Optio M50 Comes in Pink, Silver and Blue But Mostly Vanilla

Posted by Wilson Rothman at 9:00 AM on January 24, 2008

Pentax_OptioM50_Pink_3QView.jpgHere's what $260 will buy you in the point-n-shoot world right now, as embodied by the pleasantly mainstream Pentax Optio M50: a sleek little body (under 4" wide and just over 2" high), a 5X optical zoom lens, an 8-megapixel sensor, and a choice of pink, blue or silver. Little perks like "Smile Capture" make this fun at parties, but no one is going to murder you for it in some dark alley. Come to think of it, depending on where you live it might be a really smart buy. Detailed specs after jump. [Pentax]

Wii60 Controls an Xbox 360 with a Wiimote

Posted by Jason Chen at 7:20 AM on January 24, 2008

This was built a few months ago, but we just heard about it today courtesy of Jean-Luc Picard's ancestor Steve. The guy who made this hooked up an Xbox 360 to one of those XFPS adapters that let you use a mouse and keyboard on your 360, then hooked it up to a custom microcontroller using a Samsung Q1 UMPC, then hooked it up to a PC with Wiimote drivers, then connected a Wiimote to it. The result: an ability to control an FPS game on the 360 with the Wiimote and Nunchuk attachment. The best part is that the creator's documented the process so you can build your own if you really feel the need to play Halo with a Wiimote (and have money to buy a Samsung UMPC). [Live]

Synaptics' Boomerang Buttonless Remote Control Concept Might Not Catch On

Kinda neat in a pie in the sky sorta way, but they've got a few more interesting tech concepts jammed in as well.
