Dealzmodo AU: Students Buy a Mac, Get a Free 4GB Nano

Gizmodo AU

If you happen to be a student in the market for a decent computer and a decent MP3 playing device, Apple have a great offer up on their store. Buy any Mac (except the Mac Mini) and an iPod before April 18 and you’ll receive a postal rebate of $199, or the value of a 4GB iPod Nano. You can even get yourself a pink one for Valentines day.

USB Digital Camera For People Who Love a Surprise

What do you get when you develop a digital camera that lacks one of the most important benefits that digital cameras provide? This EazzzY USB camera concept from designer Sungwoo Park that’s what. The device is stripped down to its bare functions—only one button, a pinhole sized viewfinder, and USB connectivity.

Rumour: iPhone to launch in Australia on Optus

Gizmodo AU

We’ve been hanging out for the iPhone for, like, forever! Even though we were told that we wouldn’t be seeing it officially released in Australia until some time this year, the past 12 months have been an agonising wait for Apple’s handset.

And that’s why we’re ready to pounce on this rumour and hope that it’s true — The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that Thailand’s biggest network, AIS, is in negotiations to bring the iPhone to the whole Asian (and Pacific) region. Apparently AIS is working with SingTel and Optus to make our dreams of owning a locked iPhone a reality.

Seeing how AIS is partially owned by SingTel, the company that just happens to own all of Optus, there could be some meat to this rumour. If it is true, though, and if it happens before a 3G iPhone is released, we’re going to be stuck on Optus’s standard 2G network — only Telstra has the 2.5G EDGE network available in Australia.

The other thing is that Telstra have openly stated that they have been in negotiations with Apple to be Australia’s iPhone distributor. So what does it all mean? Essentially that we’re no closer to really knowing when we’ll see the iPhone released in Australia. We just hope it happens soon…

DIY Push Button Ignition and Engine Kill Switch

You know, that beater car of yours would be infinitely cooler if it had a push button ignition. Fortunately, HAL 9000 from instructables has put together a comprehensive step-by step guide that teaches you how to install one. If you have some skills with a soldering iron and a basic knowledge of the equipment involved, it should only take you a few hours to set up.

Blu-ray Domination Pushes Hardware Sales to 93% After CES

If all the talk of HD DVD’s demise wasn’t enough to actually convince you that it’s all but over for HD DVD, take a look at these numbers from the research group NPD. The two formats sold almost neck and neck in the week leading up to CES, but Blu-ray completely knee-to-groined HD DVD in the week of CES’s shenanigans with a 92.53% hardware sales rate. Our only question is: what the heck is that 7.47% thinking? [Electronista]

Safe Turn Keeps Cyclists From Getting Killed (Athough This Guy Probably Won’t Make It)

Basically, Safe Turn is a wrist mounted indicator light that automatically flickers to life whenever a cyclist raises his/her arm to signal a turn. In order to prevent the device from lighting during normal actions, like reaching for a water bottle or scratching the nose or ass, the device incorporates a “delayed start” feature that only allows the light to turn on if the user’s arm has been in position for more than 200 milliseconds.

The 10 Best Movie Weapons of All-Time: The People Speak!

A few months ago, Wizard Universe released a 50 Greatest Fictional Weapons of All-Time list and, as you might have guessed, geeks were up in arms. There were some glaring omissions (Wolverine’s claws?) and a serious mix up in the top ten (He-Man’s power sword beat the lightsaber). Thanks to a survey delivered to 2000 moviegoers by 20th Century Fox, the people have decided on the 10 best movie weapons. Let’s see if this list is more to your liking. Check them out after the break.

NextG Just Doesn’t Cut the Mustard According to the Government

Gizmodo AU

Sarah over at our sister site Lifehacker had this up yesterday, but the new Rudd Government isn’t satisfied that Telstra’s NextG network provides adequate coverage for rural Australia. So what do they do? They step in to postpone the telco’s proposed shut-off date for their CDMA network.

So if you are a bushy not prepared to make the move to NextG, you now have until April 28 (it was supposed to shut down on January 28) to enjoy making mobile phone calls before your already limited coverage disappears faster than you can say, “hello” into a now-useless mobile phone.

On a side note, I can’t help but think that this move by the government is going to strain their relationship with Telstra over their proposed new broadband network.

Apple First Quarter 2008 Earnings: Best. Quarter. Ever.

Holy crap, Apple made a lot of money this quarter: $9.6 billion in revenues for $1.58 billion in profits. Or, in English, the most bank ever in Apple history. Contributing to that massive pile of loot were 2.3 million Macs, 22.1 million iPods and 2.3 million iPhones—just in the last three months, all of which broke past records. We’re in the conference call that’s supposed to start um, now, so we’ll be updating as it rolls with anything juicy.
