Moneual I*magine HTPC Looks Purdy, Steals Out Hearts

Posted by Charlie White at 11:00 PM on January 9, 2008

This little orb is a Moneual I*magine home theatre PC, packed with a Cure 2 Duo 2.2GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, HDMI output and a 500GB hard drive for all your fave music or movies. The big draw here is the design, a matter of taste but we think it's beautiful. We also like the responsiveness of that touchscreen, and are told that if you trick the PC's innards out with an ATI 2400 XT graphics card, it can play back 1080p. Look for it in March for $US1999. Erotic Wall of Undulating Subwoofers

Posted by Brian Lam at 3:20 PM on January 9, 2008

The North hall of CES is like a different planet. Car culture dominates geek culture here, but you still find weird things like this mini wall of 7 inch Kicker solo-baric L7 subs. They were outputting a low roar that felt like a massage or subtle brush against my skin when I leaned in close. I wouldn't say it was erotic, but I wouldn't say that it wasn't erotic either.

Microsoft's Brainwashing Children's Book: Mummy, Where Do Servers Come From?

Posted by Noah Robischon at 2:30 PM on January 9, 2008

mserver.jpg"Mummy, Why is There a Server in the House?" is a children's book dedicated to "Helping Your Child Understand the Stay-At-Home Server." At first we snarked at this over-the-top marketing propaganda. But then it made us crap our pants with laughter.

What You Missed Today at CES

Posted by Noah Robischon at 1:19 PM on January 9, 2008

Here's what you missed today at CES while some Democracy thing happened in New Hampshire:
•Bill Gates told us how it feels to be the villain and the underdog, as well as what keeps him awake at night in the continuation of our multi-part interview.
•We hear that CES may be leaving Las Vegas.
•Mitsubishi cut us deep with their laser TVs.
•Art Lebedev justified his Maximus Pro Keyboard; Wowwee justified its FemiSapien robot.
•Mark groped the biggest remote control at CES 2008.
•Peavey came out with a $2,000 fake guitar and amp kit for Guitar Hero. Nyko showed off some Guitar Hero and Rock Band guitars, wireless Wii nunchucks, and PS3 rumble replacements. And some dude who looked like Slash played with his belt buckle—which is also a wireless Guitar Hero controller.
•ATI gave us a sneak peek at its graphic card that is faster than a Cray-1 supercompter.
•Matt spent some quality time with the 8.9-inch ASUS Eee PC.
•You know you're gonna click it: 10 Insane Wii Weapons.
•Oh, and Apple crashed the party for the second year in a row with a couple of announcements. We ask: why release new gear when the Macworld Keynote is only a few days away?

Handsome Gizmodo Writer: Who? Me?
FWG: Yes you, you guys wrote a story on the cookie lady but not the fat white guy serving coffee!

Heard while: waiting for a latte. Congratulations, Fat White Guy, you're internet famous.

FCC Chairman Kicking Cable and Wireless Ass in 2008

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 12:36 PM on January 9, 2008

The initials F-C-C don't usually engender excitement, but at least according to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, it's ground zero for most of the broadcasting, wireless and high-bandwidth landline innovations we'll see in the next couple years. Martin spilled on everything... Read More »

Super Cute iRiver Wing UMPC Is Also Super Tiny

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 12:30 PM on January 9, 2008

wingmain.jpgScale is everything: We knew iRiver's Wing touchscreen UMPC was seriously compact, but didn't know just how small it was. It's still a complete prototype—you're looking at dumb plastic, and the top half even sorta fell off the hinge—but we convinced them to pull it out of the glass case so we could do a quick sizemodo. We just hope it actually comes out at this size.

Reviewed.com's CES Rap Sums Up This Week Nicely, I Think

Posted by Adam Frucci at 12:08 PM on January 9, 2008

Honestly, at this point, after so little sleep, I can't tell whether or not this is a brilliant, hilarious take on CES or the worst thing I've ever seen. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, as even if I wasn't delirious with exhaustion I'd think a guy trying to rap with a mouthful of champagne was pretty hilarious. Hit the jump for the full lyrics.

Guitar Hero Guitar CES Craptacular

Posted by Sean Fallon at 12:00 PM on January 9, 2008

shredmaster.jpgGuitar Hero is wicked popular so it is not surprising that numerous companies here at CES are piling on the guitar controller bandwagon. It is also not surprising that many of these controllers blow goats. In case you were unsure, hit the gallery and lay your eyes on the "Shredmaster" and the "Shredmaster Jr." In fact, the only guitar that seemed to be worth a damn was the PS3 Frontman guitar that plays nice with both Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Anyway, we spent a good deal of time rounding up the suck, so the least you can do is enjoy it.

Hands-On With The Shaft

Posted by Mark Wilson at 11:57 AM on January 9, 2008

theshaft2.jpgThe Gadget: The Shaft, an arcade-style Virtual Console controller for playing Wii.

The Experience: The Shaft felt good. The black version had a more rubberised texture, while the white Shaft we tried out was silky smooth. We found both to our liking, and the multi-assignable turbo button is perfect for when you want some quick play.

Hands-On Proposal: Euricase Multimedia Ring Box

Posted by Mark Wilson at 11:32 AM on January 9, 2008

IMG_2869.jpgThe Gadget: Euricase Multimedia Ring Box, adds a 2-inch LCD and 60 minutes of video to otherwise meaningless jewellery boxes.

The Catch: Sarah Meyers!

The Verdict...

I sleep on the couch for the three months following CES. Don't worry honey, you know I'd never propose to an internet celebrity with such a tacky, tacky product.

Eyes-on With Lumus Minority Report Projection Glasses

Posted by Jason Chen at 11:09 AM on January 9, 2008

glassesprojec.jpgThe Pitch: Glasses that project a transparent virtual interface directly into your eyes, essentially bringing to life all heads-up user interface designs from every Sci-Fi show ever.
The Catch: It's not a real product yet (just a reference design), and it needs some kind of other gadget (phone, PDA, computer) to plug into to drive the display. Cool, but too far in the future. [Thanks to Sarah Meyers]

Media Player Knockoff Hall of Shame

Posted by Adam Frucci at 11:07 AM on January 9, 2008

knockoff463.jpgI just ventured into the bowels of the International Pavilion, a separate building beyond the North Hall that's home to tons of tiny booths of companies from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. Basically, it's full of power supplies, shitty digital picture frames and knockoffs. So many knockoffs. Take a look through our gallery and try to spot ripoff versions of the iPod nano, touch, and classic, the Sidekick, and even the Ocean. All high quality, I'm sure.

Unfortunately, they stretched the same number of pixels (800x480) across the expanded screen real estate. Yesterday, we confirmed that a WiMax-enabled Eee PC is in the pipes.

The touch sensitive, volume-controlling ears really let you get a response from feeling your ham. It will ship with a multi-functioning remote, but we believe the brochure explains it best; check out the great PR work after the equally fantastic gallery.

MyVu Crystal & Shades Pay Homage To Sci-Fi Vision

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:09 AM on January 9, 2008

myvuscifi.jpgSci-Fi eye-wear lovers are finally getting more options when shopping for new shades with MyVu's release of two new models, Shades and Crystal. Both models are geared towards watching video on the go, with what MyVu describes as "glance-down technology with true situational awareness". With this, "glance-down tech" these glasses are even closer to mimicking their Sci-Fi alter-egos, as you might have see on IO9's Galerry of Sci-Fi Vision Systems. We had our own Benny Goldman testing out the new models, and sadly he didn't have many words of praise.

Creative TravelSound 80, a Tight-Fitting Home for iPod nano

Posted by Charlie White at 10:03 AM on January 9, 2008

0033_image.jpgThe Creative TravelSound 80 is small sheathe that you can just slide your iPod nano into. Ooo, that's a tight fit, baby. Once it's nestled inside, its mini speaker blasts the tunes, sounding crystal clear for its size. Well, its sound has a rather hot high end, but what do you expect from such a puny thing? It built-in rechargeable battery replenishes your iPod's power, and you can plug it in to charge them both. This bauble isn't even announced yet, so you heard it here first, but you'll have to hold your $90 until March or April before you can introduce it to your little nano Sounds a lot like that JLab MiniBlaster for nano we tested a while ago, which was a whole lot cheaper but sounded pretty good, too.

"Slash" Rocks the Jada Guitar Hero Air Guitar Rocker

Posted by Mark Wilson at 9:22 AM on January 9, 2008

It looks like Activision is cashing in even more on their lucrative Guitar Hero licence. The Air Guitar Rocker by Jada allows you to fake rock without your console.

A belt buckle senses your air rocking (via magic pick) and sends the signal to an accompanying belt pack that both acts 1.) as the speaker and 2.) allows you to switch between 5 preloaded songs. We tried Black Sabbath's Iron Man on for size—that's not us in the above video for good reason—because we found that while the song could be played back at variable speeds depending on strumming tempo, we often unintentionally double-strummed (aka, looked like even bigger douchebags that had we been rocking out to "traditional" air guitar on the CES floor). $US29.99 this March.
