Mitsubishi Laser TV and Dancing Babes Make Jaws Drop in Vegas Nightclub Debut

Posted by Charlie White at 7:29 PM on January 8, 2008

Laser-TV-front.jpgMitsubishi put together quite a spectacle to introduce its Laser TV last night at the Moon Nightclub at The Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, unveiling a 65-inch rear-projection set that uses a unique laser backlight. The result is some of the most vivid colour we've ever seen on any TV, especially the primary colours of red, green and blue. The blacks were midnight-dark, too, and there was even a 3D version of the TV (goofy glasses required) that only made us slightly cross-eyed. Mits officials said to look for the TV to appear on the market "later this year" at an undisclosed price, and added that it will cost about the same as flat panel TVs of the same size. How does this laser backlight work? When pressed for details, they kept repeating their mantra about laser being the "purest light source," but from what we could see, we think it must have something to do with hot-looking dancing girls, frickin' lasers, smoke, and maybe even mirrors. We were taking shots of the TVs, but all these women kept getting in our way. Oh, well. Check out the almost-NSFW work gallery for details.

In our second Bill Gates interview segment, we are surprised that the question about Bill's changing image leads to a brief amusing history of Microsoft. Note the none-too-subtle hint that the Google boys should take a bit perspective from his tale. HD DVD Really Dead Now: Paramount Following Warner to Blu-ray-Only Party

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 3:10 PM on January 8, 2008

ParamountGate.JPGFinancial Times is reporting that Paramount has a clause in its HD DVD exclusivity contract allowing them to bail from the sinking HD DVD ship if Warner defected to Blu-ray, and they are "poised" to do so. Warner's switch already put 70 percent of Hollywood's output on Blu-ray—Paramount rolling Blu-ray too would promptly and undoubtfully close the books on HD DVD's future in Hollywood. Sima IR Camera Light is Essential Aid for Wildlife Watchers, Perverts

Sima%20IR%20Add%20On%20GI.jpgWe had you at "perverts," right? Well, here's the deal; we just had some hands on time with Sima's IR light for cameras. The device promises to shed a whole host of light in areas that are missing the sun-like goodness. Although we did not get to use it in optimum conditions, i.e. in an area with no light, we did get a hold of the device and have a good grope. Check the gallery to see what the next weapon in your voyeuristic arsenal will look like.

The best of the bunch is the Armorsuit enclosure, shown in the image above. It's smoking. The case has a solid aluminum construction (with plastic side windows), nine 5.25-inch device bays (including two 3.5" x 3 HDD cages), three LED fans, LED lined heat exhaust and liquid pipe inlets for solvent cooled systems. If that doesn't sound great; check out the gallery, revise your opinion and eat humble pie.

Video of Microvision Pico Projector Throwing iPod Video on Some Dude's Back...Classic

Up until now we have only heard about Microvision's "plug-and-play" pico projector for mobile devices like PDAs, PMPs, digital cameras and laptops. Now that CES our own Nick McGlynn got the opportunity to see what this bad boy can really do. We also learned that the device pictured here is actually a prototype —the final version is expected to be smaller.

Interview: Samsung Says There's Life After Hollywood for HD DVD

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 12:18 PM on January 8, 2008

format-trains.jpgWe scored a sitdown with DongSoo Jun, Executive VP and General Manager of Samsung's Digital AV Division. Translation: He's Samsung's main man on Blu-ray and HD DVD. We asked him the big question: "Is HD DVD dead ?" His answer might surprise you.

On the Hollywood front, he believes that the Warner announcement was a tipping point. In short, Blu-ray will win. But! HD DVD doesn't have to slink into a grave next to Betamax yet. It will become the chosen format for "private" (that is, personal) content because the format—ahem, Toshiba and Microsoft—has a stronghold in the PC drive market. He expects Toshiba to really concentrate on the PC HD DVD market since it's deader than disco if it loses there.

The format war ends. The "divide" begins. And it'll be even bigger, in a sense.

Philips Offers Proof of 120Hz Worth in Side-by-Side Demo of its 7403 LCD

Posted by Charlie White at 12:02 PM on January 8, 2008

philips_front_compare.jpgIs there a difference between 120Hz and 60Hz TVs? Philips proved there is a noticeable diff at CES 2008 today, showing last year's 60Hz 42-incher mounted below this year's 120Hz 7403 display. In a moving, panning image, the jumpiness of the 60Hz video was apparent compared with the butta-smooth motion of the frame-doubled 120Hz 7403 monitor mounted above it on the wall. Another astonishing stat of that 7403: its 2ms (that's milliseconds) refresh rate. However, whenever the image was static, the difference between the two wasn't noticeable. Available in May, this 42-inch smoothie will be $US1799, its 47" brandmate will run $US2099, and the biggest one of the Philips 7000 series, a 52-inch display, will be $US2799.

Texas Instruments' Wee Picoprojector for Projecting on the Go

Posted by Adam Frucci at 11:52 AM on January 8, 2008

We got a chance to check out the picoprojector that Texas Instruments is working on, both in a mobile phone and as a standalone device. The picture that it puts up isn't amazing, but you wouldn't be watching HD movies using this thing anyways. It could be useful for business travellers who want to do easy presentations as well as regular consumers who want to share short videos and pictures with their friends. There are no concrete plans to actually put this tech into, you know, devices you can buy, but hey, they're working on it so you've gotta assume they plan to get paid for it at some point.

Legendary Lasonic i931 iPod Dock Ghetto Blaster: Pics, Price, and Release Date

And for those of you who thought this thing would never see the light of day, we learned that the boombox will be priced at $US169 and it is ready and waiting for interested vendors. Hitachi 1.5 LCD and Plasma Hands and Eyes On

Hitachi announced its LCD displays that are a mere 1.5-inch thick, and now we got our hands and eyes on those thin 1080p screens. The company also showed us some tech from the future, a plasma screen that's also just 1.5-inches thin. These are some super-thin monitors, but we're wondering how many people are going to be watching TV from the side. They should look pretty tight against the wall.
