Video of the Backyard Airline Experience in India
Posted by Addy Dugdale at 1:14 AM on December 29, 2007
Remember the retired Indian Airlines engineer whose stationary airplane parked in his backyard was pulling in the punters? Well, Reuters toodled off to Delhi to clock Bahadur Chand Gupta's Airbus 300 experience for themselves, alongside a bunch of underprivileged kids who are flying for free. Anyone who scoffs at the idea, just check out the testimony of a 16-year-old passenger. "Today, my life's dream is fulfilled." Gupta's wife, who plays flight attendant, and guides the kids down the emergency chute (see? Loads better than flying for real) says of the experience, "Their happiness gives me the utmost pleasure." That's really sad. I'd like to slide down the emergency slide, though.

Looking on the brigt side, these kids are getting exposed to flights, procedures etc....since someday they will be the high quality Techies....India produces en mass....high-fliers....go on and take-over offshore companies...buy planes for themselves...become Billionaires...
Small step for the bright future..

You know, I tried to be cynical about this one, but I just can't do it. Maybe because it's Christmas.

Does it come complete with pee-soaked seats and surly flight attendants?

OMG!!! Ponies!!!
Posted 9:31 AM 28/12/07
Why can't we deplane using the emergency chute? That would begin to make up for the dwindling offerings which were once free (thanks Spirit Air for charging to check baggage - in America, that's called a bailment; you lose it, you bought it)
OMG!!! Ponies!!!

My dear friend, please feel free to read the business section every now and then, before you jump to the classifieds looking for a new hourly job. I really shouldn't be "convincing" anyone about whats happening in our economy.

The American economy is on the verge of tanking into recession, hell, the canadian dollar is worth more than our george washingtons. Keep making fun of India and China now, because in about 40 years from now, we may not be in such privileged positions.
So let the racist stereotypes fly, you enlightened monkeys! Such witty commenters you make!

I know if I was a poor kid with a chance to get near airplane ANYTHING it would be the highlight of MY young life too!
Where I would screw with him is I'd hide under the cockpit window just outside, and when he gets at the controls I'd keep repeating,
"Stay in formation, target's just ahead. Target should
be clear if you go in low enough. You'll have to decide
You'll have to decide...You'll have to decide..."

Exactly, such racist jerks we have here.
Its great to see these kids see the inside of a plane, something so many poor Indians have never seen, look how priveleged we are, but also many of us become spoiled rotten asswipes.

Its amazing that sometimes little things like a simple adventure on a plane will change minds and aspire dreams, While here in the USA those dreams are manufactured and sold because "we" just can seem to imagine such a simple pleasure. That said where is my call of duty 4 disc at!!!

@azteck: And the absolutely best thing that we could possibly give to our children (regardless of where they live) is the ability to dream. We're living in science fiction times right now, mostly because of the dreamers....

if the US enters recession and stops buying junk from China and outsourcing to India, then these two countries go back to the rice paddies :)

All hail the crazy dreamers.
I praise Mr. Gupta and his ability to turn a crazy-sounding dream (many of us arevtoo jaded to see the all the possibilities) into such a wonderful educational and entertainment experience that seems to be a successful business for him to boot.

...my cousin Walter jerked off in public once. True story. He was on a plane to New Mexico when all of the sudden the hydraulics went. The plane started spinning around, going out of control, so he decides it's all over and whips it out and starts beating it right there. So all the other passengers take a cue from him and they start whipping it out and beating like mad. So all the passengers are beating off, plummeting to their certain doom, when all of the sudden, snap! The hydraulics kick back in. The plane rights itself and it land safely and everyone puts their pieces or, whatever, you know, away and deboard. No one mentions the phenomenon to anyone else....

@spaceboy, while i certainly hope that us doesnt enter a recession, i dont think that is going to cause india or china to go back to rice paddies. the reason ? because US is not the only country feeding the growth frenzy in these two countries. Remember, a wise man once said, "We live in a global economy"
