Unborn Babies on Our iPod Creep Us the Hells Out
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 11:00 AM on December 20, 2007
This is just weird, even for the giddy parents-to-be types who like to run around showing off copies of their ultrasound at work. A hospital in England is one (two?)-upping old-school 2D ultrasounds with 4D scans of your in utero spawn. The new scanner produces a moving 3D image, which is why we guess they're calling it 4D—not 'cause it's like tesseract, which I would much rather look at. The article about the new tech's kind of trend-fishing with the iPod angle, since the hospital gives you the file on a CD or DVD, which you can load up on any portable media player. But sweet christ, I hope this doesn't become a real trend. [Evening Standard via Spluch]

I think I saw something similar at the Chocolate Museum in Barcelona. Delicious.

The FDA describes it in bold as , "Not a Wise Choice".

This 4D technology is stateside too. My wife and I, in all our giddy glory, had this same ultrasound procedure done about a year and a half ago in Tarzana, CA. I agree, it's a little wierd, but they say a mother's love knows no boundaries.

pregnancy, if you are not the one the loving parents, it is one of the most disturbing things to me. Welcome to the high tech 30s married and waiting world I guess.

Sometimes they do not look so clearly defined... for instance our daughter looked like the fuggin elephant man... of course she was fine, but the technology is not perfect, if there is not a lot of amniotic fluid in front of the face it can look quite... distorted... disturbingly so.
The tech that did ours said the more amniotic fluid in front of the face the better.

4d ultrasounds have been around for years. several medical societies in the US and Europe have come out aginst them as untested and annecessary risk to a fetus

My wife and I just did this a few weeks ago for our soon to be born daughter. It was actually pretty cool to see the 3D video footage during the ultrasound. We got the standard CD of pictures and DVD movie footage. It took until the last minute of the scan to get a clear picture of her face, but is very clear. She looks just like my wife did when she was born.
In regards to putting the pictures on my iPod, not so much. Ain't technology great?

@Simpsons-Movie-ruled: Jamie Lynn Spears' baby will have a single and music video released in about 3 months, using this technology.

How is this considered new tech? I guess next you will be tell us about TV's that are a few inches thin and hang on walls or DVD burners.

That Baby is so AAC encoded at a low bit rate. My baby was over 60mbs. And that was just one baby -- I needed to upgrade to an 80 gigger when we had twins!

Of course the color and specular highlighting are the choice of the manufacturer, and in the picture of the example perhaps not the best choice.
Why don't they give the parents a .obj or something and they can get something more pleasant out of it maybe with a raytracer of choice.
