The Road to CES: A Starter's Primer
Posted by Jason Chen at 9:00 AM on December 19, 2007
If you've just joined us in the last year, you might not be familiar with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), one of the biggest trade shows for consumer electronics on the planet. What's so special about this one is not only its size, but the fact that companies hold many product announcements so they can debut them at CES, hoping to garner great word of mouth among all the press and industry types in attendance. In fact, most of the products that roll out throughout the year were first shown or hyped at CES the previous January. Now you can see why it's so big.
The biggest item revealed at CES last year? The LG Super Multi Blue Blu-ray/HD DVD combo player. Other notable reveals were the Xbox in 2001, the DVD in 1996, and the NES in 1985.
As for Giz, we're going to be hitting the show hard, with live press conference coverage, hands on of new gadgets, and all the updates you need. It's not clear what huge announcements will be made this year, but we'll have them here when they are. You haven't seen the last of the CES primers either—we'll be ramping up all December as we get ready to make the trek to Vegas.

^^ hahaha, so true, so true.
I was originally planning on attending CES this year but I have prior engagements that must be attended to at this point. Disappointing, but oh well.

The other nice thing is that the Adult Video Industry is usually in town for their annual convention at the same time.
So you got that going for you.

I live in Vegas, so I'm there every year (at least since Comdex died).
Last year, I went home with some Netgear powerline ethernet/wireless bridges, a SlingBoxAV, and some other kitsch.
This year, I hope to score a Dash GPS Navigator (winner of last year's Best of CES) and a SlingCatcher.

I remember OLED TVs were getting some love at the very crowded SONY booth.
I recall across from the LG showroom they had some bendable LCD screens being demoed in glass cases.
I also remember playing resistance: fall of man on a giant ass 1080p TV.
The glass wall speakers were pretty cool as well.

@Tek Elements: What do you mean unfortunately? That seems like good timing so they don't cut into each other.
All that aside: was the biggest product that dual format player last year? Seriously? That product seems like a logical and almost inevitable step in their game.
Anyone remember what else was hyped at CES last year?

@EBone:
Unfortunately this year AVN starts as CES finishes.
See you there Jason. I'll be arriving Monday, leaving Wednesday.

I opened this page and walked away for about a half hour...interesting to come back to it, I didn't know I was looking at the topic before.

I'll be there showing off two new custom computers.
One in cherry and the other in mahogany.
It should be fun.

I'm excited that they're pushing gaming to the general show goer instead of tucked away in invite only rooms or offsite.

Yeah I regret not picking one up at the time, I had really liked Sirius then so I had held off and now I am liking the XM lineup much better.
The Creative Zen for something like $30 on launch was insane.
I already plan to take some serious cash this year and leave with a new PMP since my old zen took a header last year and spilt down the seam.
