Sun Table Brings Solar Power To Laptops, TVs
Posted by Jason Chen at 7:26 AM on December 19, 2007
TreeHugger's got the scoop on this Sun Table, an otherwise normal-looking table covered in solar panels that's effective enough to power your gadgets for a few hours. The internal battery's max storage stores 13 amps and charges in 3 hours under full sunlight.
It depends on the type of device you use (laptops get 3 hours, TV gets "a couple"), and you can check on how much juice is left with the LED display on the side. Unfortunately, it's $US3600, but if you love working outside on your deck in the summer, this does seem pretty awesome. One warning though: don't sprawl your papers and crap all over the table when you're working. [Treehugger]

@vertigoh: Uh, first, relax. Second, most solar power devices are intended for off-grid use. Yeah, this table doesn't make any sense for my deck (especially with all my tree cover), but that doesn't make it useless for everyone.

Oh oh oh AND!
Who the hell are they marketing this at? No one in NYC can use it unless you want to spend 4 grand so you can put it on your roof top and let all your neighbors charge their iPods and let pigeons crap on it. ...because it won't fit/work in your damn apartment anyway.
Lets see who else? Oh how about the people in Seattle - who wants to put this out there so that it can get rained on. BTW it gets dark here at 4:30pm these days and sun comes up at ...well it doesn't really ever come up it just stays behind the clouds that flippin rain all day. So is this a seasonal thing?
Oh what's that you say? ...all those people in the mid states? They have enough dirt to put in some wind towers on their land so why the hell would they need this?

1. Dose the energy/potential electrical waste that goes into producing this justify powering 1 gadget.
2. That MacBook Pro apparently isn't environmentally friendly according to Greenpeace. (not that i would give a sh*t)
3. Do you save $3600 in electricity during its expected lifespan.
Otherwise, cool idea.

I'm so sick of this green garbage. "you can run your laptop for 15 minutes after 3 days of charging"
Screw that! I pay an extra 10 bucks a month for green power from my local energy company. While the power that goes directly in to my home isn't green I at least subsidize the grid with 2x as much sustainable energy as I actually use in my home.
But I swear if I see one more of these useless fucking gadgets I'll flip out. This is the reason people laugh at you!!! - that and you've just smoked your pants trying to get high and you're in need of a bath.
How the hell did they come up with this stupid crap? Although I bet the conversation started with "Dood I'm so lit right now.."

wow Vertigoh thats 6 comments in a hr.. calm the fuck down about the solar powered table ffs and i WOULD agree w/ u about the price of the table and its efficiency but u know since ur such a douchebag i think ill prove u wrong just to spite ur dumbass.
And i srsly wish gawker had some sort of post limit because im sure ur annoying comments have surpassed any limit a reasonable person would post... in an hour... over an article.. that they hate.
You have seriously issues if u spend your time trying to turn a gadget news site into a forum about... hating gadgets?
So heres wat i say to u stfu and gtfo u goddam douchebag.

Anywho, onto this sun table: Honestly, I see no practical use for it either unless you're living out in the middle of the Angeles Crest Forest with no power (which chances are you still do get power there or you're just an idiot who likes to live in an area that burns down every few years.) I mean, I'm for green power and such, but how would this help someone out at all especially with that price?

Seems to me that a table that size should power a laptop indefinitely in direct sunlight. Not just 3 hours.
Frankly I am with VERTIGOH. I think this is a colossal waste of resources.

@TheSonOfKrypton: They probably spent all their start up cash on those pricey screws with which they fasten those legs to the solar panels with :) Did you see the other pics of this crappy table at Treehugger?

@citizen024: Are you saying the "footprint" or whatever they call that thing of where it takes more energy/resources to produce something than it will ever recoup? ...cause if you are I'm sure the table is right there with it.

@TheSonOfKrypton: Its placed on the product picture above, and since its meant to be eco-friendly, it seems odd.

Yeah, some interesting points.
What good is a table, if you can't put anything on it, at least, anything that isn't transparent?
Batteries max storage capacity is 13 Amps? Since when did the unit of Amps represent storage capacity? Amp-Hours is a storage capacity unit, so are we to assume that the storage of the battery is 13Ah?
What's the problem with solar powered gadgets? Where it makes since, it's awesome (watch that never needs it's battery replaced, or a watch that has a lot of features that does not need to be charged by plugging it in). I agree, that most of the solar gadgets posted here seem to be a bit over the top, but solar power has it's places...probably used a lot more than you think...take a look around you some time.

Too bad you won't be able to read anything on your LCD screen in the direct sunlight required to charge the table.

@sumocat: Justify the investment cost of almost 4 grand in to this "power plant" and tell me what will your return be on it in lets say over the next 2 years before it breaks?
Will you charge your MacBook worth 4 grand?

@vertigoh: I totally agree, This thing is worthless. Here's an idea, why not put solar panels on something that's main purpose is not to put something on. The two uses are so blatantly incompatible it makes by brain hurt. Also, what percent of the land in the world is warm enough to work outside, but not to hot to want to work in the shade? Very little, and even then it would make more sense on, say, a roof. Idiots

This would be great on the deck of the summer cabin (no grid). -when the price comes down.

The purpose of a table and the purpose of a solar panel are mutually exclusive. Ignoring that, I don't really see the need for patio furniture that generates electricity.
