SmartSink Uses Height-Calculating Software to Save Your Back
Posted by Addy Dugdale at 11:45 PM on December 28, 2007

MIT student Leonardo B has come up with an idea for a sink that positions itself depending on the height of the user and adjusts its temperature depending on what you are putting in it. (This is useful when you are nudging 6'0", whilst your husband struggles to hit the 3'6" mark*, even when he is wearing what he refers to as "gypsy shoes.") Video, plus explanation of how the sink works, below.
As you approach the sink, a camera and custom-built software calculates, using your line of sight, how tall you are. The sink then adjusts its height accordingly, and a second camera clocks the object to be washed, determining the temperature of the water. [TechEBlog]
*This is obviously a joke. J is 6'0" (or 1.80 meters, as they say in Euroland.)

Did we really need MIT for this one? I think my crazy neighbor could have come up with this in his salvage yard/"workshop".

Marry someone with your own height and never have kids! The secret for perfect ergonomics.

I would rather just have some presets, so you could pick the height you like and when you enter the bathroom it automatically adjusts rather than having it set the height it thinks I will want.

I may get some heat for this but does it adjust for mens larger feet, as we all know women do the dishes because their smaller feet allow them to be closer to the sink.

It looks like they've put far too much into it already.
Just wash up and get out.
We got people waitin' here!

Coolness. But I thought it was a bad idea to let produce touch the sink... If you clean stuff -in- it, that means it's not exactly clean itself, right?
I also wonder how many times they had to chuck the glass into the sink before it stayed in, unbroken, instead of bouncing and flying out to smash into something.

I can second the presets comment. I'd rather have a "wash veggies", "wash hands", "wash dishes", "drinking water", and "cooking water" temperature buttons.

Cool Idea.. I've seen something similar to this in those "GE Future Home" setups. An up/down control switch to the set the height of the sink and counters.
This reminds of a Citibank ATM Drive-Thru in Connecticut somewhere (maybe Greenwich), I was totally surprised and thrilled when I saw it had a control switch to heighten and lower the whole friggin ATM so you could reach it better!
