Qik Streams Live Video From Nokia Phones, Beats Youtube By a Parsec
Posted by Jason Chen at 5:45 AM on December 21, 2007
Here's a video Lam streamed to me live, direct from his Nokia N95 phone in Tahoe using the qik system. Not only could I see and hear what he was doing in real time, I could even type to him and have the words show up on his phone. It only works on Nokia phones (N70, N80, and N90-series included), but just imagine the implications. You can be shopping and get someone's advice in real time, or snowboarding and showing off everyone else back at Giz HQ how you tumbled and ate it. Much better than having to upload and wait for your Youtube movie to process. [Qik]

my nokia n80 (and many other 3g phones) can do this now, without any extra software... has no-one heard of a 3G video call?

I have nothing snarky to say. I'm really stunned by how cool this is.

Cool post and great that BLam would take time to share that while on his time off...I guess the cleaning person is on vacation too.

There is a lifecaster on justin.tv that has been using an N95 to stream live for a couple of months. But she didn't use qik.com to stream she uses a different provider. See for yourself at [www.comvu.com]
It looks like qik.com provides better quality streaming.

That is just nastiness.
And as the overweight woman says to her husband while getting sold my Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite . . .
'I want that.'

That's the final push I need to get an N95. I've never been able to justify getting one but this is a fantastic application.

Ah, gotcha. Now I'm strangely disappointed in my lack of geekiness.

So Lam's not at his home right now then?
And all his gadgets are just sitting there, unattended.
Interesting...

(and I'm pretty sure that was the whole point of the post title and you weren't geeky enough to pick up on it)

@SunZhiQian: Actually a parsec is a measure of distance in our universe too.

Hmmm...not that I wanna go all geeky on you guys, but a 'parsec' is actually a measure of distance in the Star Wars universe rather than a measure of time. Here's a reference below, but sadly I only had to use it for verification, not for learning.

/ashamed of how geeky the is for knowing that.

She'll make point five past lightspeed. She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid.

Hopefully the iPhone will rollout its video capabilities in one of the next few firmware updates and qik can provide compatibility.
Last three spots on the iPhone predictions:
1. Games
2. Video
3. Storage / Finder

Why not just use a portable TV, an IP camera and a 3G modem with a laptop?
Because its a stupid idea, thats why. Just use this thing.

@SunZhiQian:
It could still (kind of) apply though, because Qik uses the shortest route to get the video content to the viewer, by streaming it directly, rather than having to upload it to YouTube first.spyderms
