PHOSPHOR Ana-Digi Watch Features E-Ink Display
Posted by Sean Fallon at 10:15 AM on December 12, 2007
I suppose it was only a matter of time before a company decided to use the same E-Ink technology found in the Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader on a watch. Now that someone has, the result is interesting but slightly underwhelming. At the push of a button, users can change the watch face design —unfortunately, these changes are confined to a black and white face and various digital and analogue configurations. It is a decent first try, but the technology probably won't be truly useful in this capacity until colour E-ink displays become available. Available for $250. I used to do something similar with bright sunlight and my old $2.00 digital watch.

"the technology probably won't be truly useful in this capacity until color E-ink displays become available" This statement makes no sense.

Cool!
Now I don't have to strap Kohls price tags to my wrist to wear an e-ink display anymore!

It's a nice looking basic watch, but does the actual unit say e-ink?

E-Ink could be a cool way to make reconfigurable gauges for a car dashboard: for easy conversion between metric and miles, celsius and fahrenheit.
Or you could have a "race mode" that would swap the useless-for-racing speedometer for a tachometer (given a computer-controlled indicator needle).

@Ben:
Oh and oh behalf of the grammar police, your question should read "...entirely different than OLED displays"

@Cowboy_X:
You beat me to it.
Sean, WTF are you talking about?

@Ben: Behold, I bring you to the doorway of knowledge:
E-ink - [en.wikipedia.org]
OLED - [en.wikipedia.org]

Wait, wait, wait wait up... is E-ink something entirely different to OLED displays?

I think that the display could be a lot cooler.. Unfortunately, we have a case of the technology coming out before getting a creative touch to make it really cool.

Not sure why it has actual hands. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the E-Ink display? Seems like a waste of technology.
Being E-Ink, shouldn't it be able to show something like:
Tuesday
Dec. 11th
6:06 pm

Call me when the analog clock hands are part of the display too, and not actual mechanical hands.

@hughjass: Your grammar police are the direct descendants of the Keystone Kops. You don't "differ than." You "differ from."

The Seiko Spectrum limited-edition watch in 2006 had an E-Ink display and was way cooler than this one (the display was curved). The only problem was it cost $2000!

Does anyone know if you can set the analog & digital to two different time zones?

Yeah Casio did do this a ways back with their $2-$3K E-ink watch/bracelet. This is way lamer...

Can you skin it? Can you change the fonts to your whim desire? Can you change the color of it's illuminated back?
This are the things that to me would make this clock the "bestest" electronic displaying ink "evar".
But i vote for one of this on my wrists for this holiday season FTW.

When the hell is E-ink going to stop being a damned gimmick and come out in some sort of useful form?

@infmom:
"Different from", while nonstandard, is still acceptable. "Different to", while used frequently in Britain, is not.
@SomeoneUKno:
An utterance doesn't require a complete sentence. I was being facetiously picky about Ben's grammar. You're just being dumb.
