OLPC Ad by Heroes' Masi Oka Has Us Convinced
Posted by Jason Chen at 4:00 AM on December 13, 2007
We might have been a bit harsh on Masi Oka and his OLPC ambassadorship when it was first announced, but this ad of his seems pretty solid. He's pimping the OLPC Give One Get One program, which lets you buy two laptops (one for yourself, one for some kid you don't know) for $US399. Seems like the OLPC team made a good pick in him—he's sincere and nerdy enough that you'd actually believe he cares about laptops for kids.

One of the great things about this computer is that it can take a pissing and keep on clicking!
More connecting power to "the people"!

@DYSTHYMIA:
Seriously. "A 9 to 5 environment pc." You've missed the point by such a margin that if the point were the size of the sun, it wouldn't even register as a dot from how far away you are.
Windows sucks. Say it all with me. The "Desktop" metaphor has effectively zero to do with how you use your computer today (if it ever had much to do with how computers were used). I can ask you a simple question, and you will have only one possible answer... "What is your computer good for without connectivity to other computers?" Your only reasonable answer -- not much. These new machines are built with a user interface paradigm that is inclusive of connectivity rather than having an oddly bolted on notion of connectivity.
Time to pull your head out of your... oh nevermind, I didn't realize the trolls had migrated from /. to digg to here.

@dysthymia: Windows is way too brittle to make a good OS for the XO.
I can barely even keep my parents and neighbors up an running half the time. XP is fine for me and for people with a background in tech or at least has access to a tech support person.
But I can only imagine how badly things would go for XP in the middle of the bush.

@Earthslide: Only because I hadn't commented yet.
Seriously. Masi rules. Talk about somebody whose profile has shot through the roof fast and immediately started doing something with the platform.

good ad, nice guy, great effort, toy pc. Hopefully Windows will hurry up with that xp version for it, that would do it more like real pc. A 9 to 5 environment pc.

@daftrok: which is twice as expensive as the OLPC. My guess is that you're going to do neither.
They should rename it the Hiro PC. That acronym is unwieldy. Masi ftw!

@daftrok: does asus do a $799 buy one give one program?

This shouldn't be difficult for Hiro, he could just freeze time for everywhere but the factory they make these in order to get many produced in a short period of time. Then he could just teleport with a big sack of them into each community that will receive them.

good add. i like the way they specifically designate the one you keep as going to a child...cause i would never buy it for myself.

He's on a fairly lofty campaign, but it's a good one. There's no reason a child shouldn't be able to learn to use a computer just because they can't afford one.

I love these adds and applaud his ambassador role.
I am a big fan of OLPC and the XO and agree with their approach to accessibility and simplicity but I also think they may need to switch to Linux-Penguin for their OS as it seems a tab based system may be easier to learn.
I also can't wait to laugh at how badly a pared-down XP system works in limited storage/RAM, but for those potential government customers in the developing world who will never get past a non-Win approach I think the option of XP is probably a wise decision. I just hope they do some blind focus tests in those regions to provide customers with information about how quickly each of the OS options is adopted by their target market.

You know, I thought it would be tough to get any lamer than Heroes, and I was right, but still they pulled it off. Well done indeed on them.
@"myrcurial"- a lot of us use our computers independent of other systems. I'm online right now, but pretty soon I'll be unplugging to get some work done. On my computer.

Just think how many people's "buy one get one" donations went towards producing and running this advert...
Several thousand?
