Nissan GT-R Detects When Car is on a Race Track, Disables Speed Limiter via GPS
Posted by Adrian Covert at 7:15 AM on December 23, 2007
It's no secret Giz loves the GT-R. We consider it the unofficial car of Gizmodo, actually. So imagine our collective giddiness when we heard that the Japanese model has a feature that uses GPS to detect when it's on a race track, prompting the Engine Control Unit to disable the speed limiter (which holds the engine at 111 mph in Japan).
The North American model will not have the same functionality, but the speed limiter doesn't kick in until 156 mph, which is more than enough for the average suburban speed demon. Admittedly, it's a feature that a very small percentage of GT-R owners will actually use, but the idea of a satellite detecting your location and making engine adjustments is pretty damn cool (the dash control screen is still the coolest, however). Considering Nissan's reliability, I'd hate to have all these electronic gizmos when that opens the door to more failures. They're pretty much below American cars and down there with the Germans on that front.

I hope the coordinates are accurate... caning down the back straight and the computer determines you're "outside the grid" and enables the limiter... bad.
Or vice versa - unlimited street racing when you're using the B road that runs parallel to the back straight...

it's a sweet car but i think it's way over priced i don't know any one who can afford one who's going to cough up 60-80 grand for this car over a Porsche or z06 or which ever car with a well know reputation, skyline/gtr is more popular among kids who most of them can't afford this car

@DARYLL: I'm sure there is a method to bypass the limiter. There's that secret button-combo thing that activates the Launch Mode for the GT-R, so why not one that defeats the limiter?
And I think we all realize that it's not the satellite that's changing the car's tuning...

Either that, or it's incredibly scary and big brother-esque.

Uh guys. The satellite doesn't detect squat nor does it adjust your engine. I wish people would realize that GPS is a passive technology.
The car uses the GPS signal to determine whether it is on a track and adjust the engine.
Since you can buy really cheap GPS jammers, that'll make track time really fun. All of a sudden your car won't pass 111 mph, because the guy next to you has cranked up his jammer.

I'm surprised it has a limiter at all. Maybe its necessary for the Japanese market, but Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche et all do not put limiters on their cars.

that car looks hot and better than G35 coupe. I can almost say it is looking like a lambo or Aston. Am I the only one loving this?

Nice car, but too expensive for me. Oh well, there's always the old models.

@PatrickAustin: again, it's not the satellite that's spying on your location, it's the car detecting the position of the satellite, so no big-brother issues because the car doesn't connect to anything and report you.

Step one: get a GT-R
Step two: hack the GPS
Step three: pre-emptively hire Johhny Cochrain's ghost
Step four: enjoy

111 miles per hour? That's almost four times the legal speed limit for regular roads and over twice the legal speed limit for highways. Also, traffic sucks in Japan.

@Jesse in Japan: True, but if you're just driving around to get to work and stuff then you'd be better off with another car. It's for... I dunno... racing in low-traffic areas? Something like Initial D?

I didn't think they'd run out of COOL stuff to put in cars so soon!
I don't get it, personally.
Why not just totally de-ball the thing and force it to go no more than 3 miles above the speed limit posted for any given road?
I mean in for a penny in for a pound with your new high tech high power performance machine, right?

how can it tell that you are on a track? does it have every track programmed into it's system? its bs if you ask me

That's both cool and hilarious. I like the tech behind it but the greatest car around with a top speed of 111mph is laughing material. That means that just about every car on the road can out fast the GTR. My 20 year old 140hp slow ass sports car bests that number by 3.

LOL I think its easy..
Japan is one of the most developed GPS assisted driving maps and locantion, So for instance if you are outside any urban area, street or high way, i could easy allow to disable the speed limit.
like a gps navigation system has every street and avenue or high way location, and name, could easily have tracks and other open areas to have fun with your car. We all know japan had the first and best driving assistants and all that stuff that now TomToms and Garmings do.. but better
Got it?

I understand there is limiter. but if im paying close to $100,000?
My 06 Maxima tops out at 157! no speed limit there.
and of course it will be hacked ..

The average (and even low-cost) GPS system for america has between 1.3 and 6 million POI's (points of interest) in it's memory, and of course all roads, so I don't quite get why people think there would be any issue in entering coordinates of racing tracks.
Nor do I get why people think this is so 'great', unless they are japanese and don't go out of the country much, and like to race, and don't know how to bypass limiters.
And it's true that the japanese GPS implementations are one or more generations ahead of the rest of the world. Which makes you wonder why they don't corner the western market with their expertise.

wow, i've never seen someone speak so well through their own anus. nissan makes great cars, and has for a long time. in the 80's, their cars surpassed the American competition, as they still do now.

I hope they start using it the other way so that it can detect when you are in a 25mph zone and limit the car to that speed. Personally I think that any jackass that thinks it is ever ok to drive 156mph on a public road should have their gas pedal foot amputated.

Why the hell would you want to have gps control how your engine acts? If I was paying 80K + for this car when it comes out, I better be able to make any change I want since the car is going to be horribly over priced when it comes state side. Cool car, but its 4000lb. Add to that aroud 450 flywheel horse power which quite a bit will be lost due to the awd system. So its a cool car but I can't stand all this hype about how its some revolutionary car.
