NBC Jumps Into SanDisk's Fanfare TV Download Service
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 2:10 AM on December 12, 2007
Though you can no longer buy episodes of "The Office," "Heroes" or "30 Rock" on iTunes, you will be able to purchase them in January from SanDisk's Fanfare service. Of course, if you recall, you can't download the shows to your computer. You will have to watch them on the $US100 to $150 SanDisk Sansa TakeTV, which has some sluggish controls and video quality that isn't exactly hot. I'm stoked that SanDisk scored NBC because I want to see where Fanfare can go, but this sort of bush-league alliance, forged in flagrant defiance of its former friend Apple, makes NBC-Universal look like some kind of slutty ex. If only the record labels would slut it up just a bit more. As much as I'm an Apple fanboy, their closed media/product ecosystem is just taking a market controlled by tight-fisted douches and giving it to another company.
In lieu of an actual open system, DRM-free, the best we can seem to hope for is many closed systems. It's still a step in the right direction - more choices for the consumer - just with irritating hardware lock-in once you chose your device and corresponding store.
But really, let's all just keep on torrent-ing TV and let the dicks try and sort it out, crappy DRM and all, by themselves.

@aec007: You're right it does. So go install the Flashblock extension for your copy of FireFox.
@klaybc: Hehehe, funny.
I for one am not at all interested in FanFare. I like my media to be portable, which means playable on different devices. Plus the video quality isn't even decent.
I enthusiastically await NBCs return to iTunes, since iTunes is my primary acquisition method for TV now, and I sure do miss some of my favorite shows from last season.

Wow, what a cool concept! Wait, I can already do all that with my iPod! Why would I switch? Why, for the same price, would somebody buy one of these things instead of an iPod? More selection of songs/video with iTunes and a world of accessories for iPods. NBC must know something the rest of the world doesn't!

NBC could have easily voiced their displeasure at Apple with some harsh words and making all kinds of side deals. But now that they are making their content available just about everywhere BUT the iTunes store is just pissing me off. Not at Apple. At NBC. I think that just on principle now any NBC show I watch will be done only after I've grabbed a torrent. Up yours NBC!

@Monty:
Obnoxious is an understatement.
The add takes huge bandwidth and space out of the
web page....

@klaybc: So NBC and SanDisk get murdered, and Steve Jobs goes to prison?

I enjoy the comedy of reading this story about dumping Apple right next to the obnoxious Apple flash video.

Yeah, well, maybe that slutty ex will make iTunes take a good, hard look at himself. Maybe get to the gym and drop a few pounds. Maybe not care at all that she is now with that golf pro. Uh, ahem...
