Microsoft Working on Motion Sensitive Controller for Xbox 360?
Posted by Adrian Covert at 4:10 PM on December 29, 2007
Website XboxFamily.com dropped a rumour this week that peripheral maker Gyration is developing a motion-sensitive add-on for the existing Xbox 360 controller. Microsoft has yet to utter a word regarding this rumour, but could the Big N have finally ruffled Microsoft's feathers? [XboxFamily via Next-Gen via Kotaku]

@Andham:
i imagine whatever games what be supported by the speculated microsoft version. or maybe just a tilting alternative instead of using the d-pad.

@mainlinx: What can you use it for, though?
Unless there are games to support it, whats the point?

Motion Control for precision video games is no where near ready for the consoles. It really saddens me a bit to think that MS is 'me-too'ing in this (possibly). For all of my PS3 games I've turned off Motion Control where possible.
I actually did an article about Controller Dissonance for my blog; and it outlines a lot of why I dislike the current state of motion controlled video games:

it's been out for a while a comes in other colors as well. Though it is DIY vs. Buy Direct.

I'd rather have an Xbox 360-specific Falcon Novint. 3D control AND force feedback. Only downside is the need for a table or desk, but hey, you can't have it all!

@Adrian Covert: even if this is true, the only type of system that could be added on to an xbox controller is a sixaxis type thing, a don't really see a wii type motion sensing pheasable for the xbox. and they would also be more 'motion' sensitive, as in tilting and stuff like that, not reliant on a sensor bar.

Microsoft probably just doesn't wanna be left out in the cold since both Nintendo and Sony have motion-sensing technology. Of course it will still probably lack the Wiimote's pointer capabilities. Plus it will never be a standardized feature so they'll likely have to bundle this accessory with supported games.

well this is all well and good but come on guys. granted, the mo-sense stuff is a hung reason why the wii is so popular, because it makes playing games 'easier' for non gamers. BUT another huge part of it is the size of the controller and the fact that a lot of these games can be played with one hand. And who can pass on one handed fun? exactly. Also, i'm sure the price helps a bit too.

microsoft had game technology like the wiimote over a decade ago. It didnt sale. Now thats its proven itself i dont see why they wouldn't take advantage of all that R&D...

@jbhitter24: ha. sixaxis is nothing more than another case of a company reacting to nintendo.

@r.p.goodfellow: I can pass, easily and often, on one-handed gameplay.
It's really, really, really easy. It's called the PCPS360. Yeah.

@Andham: Why would there be games supporting the tech now if the tech isnt even out?
Im sure games will offer the motion feature in the future, and existing games that make sense to use it will add it via update.
But i for one could care less about this. If it does come out, AND exists entirely within a battery pack that you purchase, then i would buy it just for the hell of it. Otherwise, if it has to be added to the bottom, then i wont touch it (i already dont use my chatpad except for entering in codes).

Wow, that seems like it would be really cool.... oh wait, i forgot... the 360 i got for X-mas died on the 26th just after the 24hr mark. I assume the tech would be very similar to Sony 6-axis , as in tacked on and cheap feeling. if i want motion sensing, I think i will stick with my Wii.
