Keyport Slide Update: $60 Version Coming 2008
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:00 AM on December 12, 2007
Not to inundate you with endless updates about the keyport key device, but we've got some news that you'll be glad to hear. After the limited edition $US300 run is done, there's going to be a cheaper $US50 edition of the Keyport slide some time in 2008.
Hopefully the keyport people don't take a page from the Optimus' book and gimp the lower-end version so hard that it's essentially worthless. Adding on keys to a keyboard is pretty lame, but adding on keys to a keychain is, well, just as lame. Most of you wouldn't pay $345 for something that consolidates six of your keys into one gadget, but would you pay $60? We would. We'd probably pay even more if they could make one of the keys a knife. Stabby stabby. [Key-Port]

I cant help but notice there are only three slide buttons and 7 key slots?? An engineering mystery if you ask me.

International Shipping Flat Rate US$75. That's just a "bend over, you don't deserve any respect" price. What a crock. Shipping to Estonia would cost them less than US$10.

I can't see the LED. That would clearly be one _very_ useful idea to be left rotting in the sun. I mean, a pocket light on your keychain for when you grope and fiddle with the locks in the dark. But I am quite sure that Victorinox could come up with something similar for a more reasonable price. $50 is still a lot. Car makers should turn their keyfobs into something similar.

Fuck it.
I'd buy it.
With all the different types of key blanks, there's no way it could ship with blanks included.
All the do is probably weld them onto shafts that slide out, which, very few of us would have the technical skill to do. I would at least hope they weld, and not solder your keys.
Either way, for $50, why the fuck not. It's got about that much amusement in it, except I'd put keys on there that I'll have permanently, like tool boxes, et cetera. Get some more life out of this thing.
Speaking of, what is their policy on key replacement. If they come with free lifetime replacement for new keys, even if they charge for shipping/handling, that might be worth it.

It would be useful if it came with blanks that you took to a shop to be cut and then reinserted into the little box.

If they can figure out a way to strip my 4GB flash drive and shove it in that thing, I would buy the expensive one.

Keys slide in...
Keys slide out...
Keys get jammed because I got the plastic $50 version...
Don't care still want one it looks cool. Even with my alarm fob it'd still be smaller than what I have to carry now.

@slingblade: agreed. Though this is a good idea, tokiwartooth has a good point. if I have to send my keys to be sent out and could take anymore than 3 weeks, I am not sure I would do it for even $50. I would like to see if they could get places locally to do it so that it would not take so long.

I still want them to make a version with an integrated remote fob for different car manufacturers that you program when you get it home. Then it truly would be an all-in-one key to my wallet.

This company is... out of their mind.
From the FAQ: "Each individual order takes up to two hours for us to process and convert your keys to fit in the unit."
So it's $50 plus sending your keys that will not be copied, but cut up and modified, possibly taking eight weeks to process.
Also: product renders. "The appearance of your Keyport may vary" - and that's for the limited edition $300 job.
End the KeyPort insanity!
(All that, I'd love one

6 slots, 3 slides on each side I am sure. the reasoning is that your finger needs more surface area than the thickness of a key. with a tig welder and some wood working tools I could probably make a sweet one out of rosewood and some spare clock components. Or maybe some parts from a destroyed kurta calculator.

Part of the cost would be converting your keys into their patented sliding keys. I do want a flash drive and maybe integrated car alarm remote. Don't mind if it's plastic, just wait until china starts ripping off this idea.

If you want a stabby stabby knife, they offer it in their FAQ under custom key ports. You can also get one made of bone which would I suppose would be a good pairing. Get out your wallet though, because custom keyports start at $5000 it says.

I've read your Secure Delivery procedure but I'm still not sure about this. Are there any other options?
Yes, you can go to your local locksmith and purchase unduplicated key blanks to send us. After your Keyport™ is delivered with the unduplicated blanks installed, you can take it back to your locksmith and have the keys duplicated from your original set of keys. All Keyport™ compatible blanks will fit in your locksmith's standard key duplication machine. Remember, your Keyport™ compatible keys are simple to transfer in and out of the unit.

I'd buy one for $50, but I would not send in my keys. For $50 they have to allow the consumer to get the keys copied locally and to allow them to replace keys in the future.
@x40sw0n: I think I can count 7 slots also and from a usability standpoint (ease of accessing any single key) it would be a much more obvious interface if there was 3 slides on one side and 4 on another. That way the 2 sides would never get mixed up and it would reduce user error significantly.

I guess I just don't get it. $50 for a keychain?! Are you kidding? Mine cost a whopping $2 and that includes a clip to keep it on my belt instead of my pocket. Why anyone would buy this is beyond me - it isn't even that innovative.
Even going a step beyond that and assuming people would buy it for some kind of fashion sense, there are a lot of car keys that can't be put into this due to RFID security systems in the cars. Also, different keys are made of different metals(welding is difficult with dis-similar metals), so that would tend to make me believe reliability would be an issue.
