iPhone/iTouch Gets PlayStation Emulator
Posted by Jason Chen at 7:30 AM on December 12, 2007
The NES emulator for the iPhone was hard enough to control with the touchscreen that we can't imagine how frustrating it would be to try and play a PlayStation 1 game on the iPhone or iTouch. Luckily for us this is still a work in progress and these screens (bonus one after the jump) that show button placement aren't quite final. What we do know is that screen scaling will be improved, sound will be supported, there will be four face buttons and 75% of games will be compatible. It would be 1000% better if someone could hook up a wireless Bluetooth controller to the iPhone/iTouch to play this instead of smashing the screen with your fingers, covering up parts of the action. The developer also says he's giving out betas to people who donated to him for gpSPhone and psx4iphone. We're not sure how kosher that is, but you should watch out in case you're trying to donate in order to get one of these early.

Seriously for the love of god, please don't mangle Apple's product names. My family is confused enough about technology and christmas is coming up.
To everyone whining about the controls: if you really bought your phone or ipod to play playstation games, go get your money back. When your phone or ipod sucks at running playstation games, it's functioning *as designed* because *it was never meant to do that.*
You might as well be saying "wtf, my phone makes a lousy frisbee!"

But I thought the touchscreen buttons on the iPhone and Touch were just as good as real buttons? I am confused.

If only there was a practical way to actually play PS1 games on it. I'd love to be able to take FFIX on the road with me. That'd be friggin' rad!

This is definitely absurd... better hope the game only takes up the center 1/4 of the screen or you'll be touching all over stuff you need to see.

If the iPhone has bluetooth wouldn't one be able to connect to a bluetooth game controller?

@impendingdoom:
RIGHT!
Get rid of the IDEA of touchscreen buttons, make a peripheral that adds them.

@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: ScummVM was released about a month ago and has come a real long way in the last few updates-- there's full sound support and it runs at a really nice speed.

If only we could use a usb controller plugged into the bottom port of the iphone then this would be entertaining to no end. Touchscreen buttons are a blessing and a curse, but more of a curse when playing any game that isnt a slow moving rpg.

The only emulation I'd find useful on an iPhone/iPod is ScummVM.
For all the rest, it'd only be fun to play stuff if, as Jason said, it had an external controler.
If it doesn't, it's just something to brag about, or think it's great, than play it once, and never use it again.
At least for those who likes emulators... because for myself, I found out that even though I'm kinda nostalgic about gaming, I rarely use my gaming time playing old games. I like to listen to some old midi music, or watching some videos of old games... but actually playing stuff over again. Sounds awesome, but turn up being just a waste of time. That's only for me though.

2D title screens running at a blazing 4 frames per second!
And I'm sure once you actually get into the game where animated sprites are present, or heaven forbid 3D objects, the framerate drops to a blistering 4 seconds per frame.
Why even bother putting emulated systems on things that obviously can't handle them?

"It would be 1000% better if someone could hook up a wireless Bluetooth controller to the iPhone/iTouch"
Hmm.. Well that might be feasible on the iPhone. But that elusive "iTouch" (I'm assuming you mean the "iPod Touch" and not the myriad of Chinese "iTouch" knockoffs) doesn't have Bluetooth, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that won't be happening.

@jmxzero: I love Scumm VM sooooo much on my iPhone. I just got to Part 2 on Secret of Monkey Island. I remember playing it in 1990 on my friend's father's $3000 computer. The fact that I am playing it on my phone still seems surreal.

@michaelportent: There is, it's call the PSP. Just hack the firmware and you can convert the PSX disc to playable form with some freeware apps.

@willyboy:
By the way, if the title of this app is "psx4all", why would it be a GBA emulator?

You can get the PSP version, or face the fact that you need a real controller to play these games, and get yourself a decent laptop with some bare-able mobile graphics card and play emulators using USB adaptors for all of the original controllers.

Aren't you all tired of these hacks yet? I would prefer games designed specifically for the iPhone and iPod touch as opposed to emulators.
I'm also not fond of the idea of an Apple released update bricking my iPhone and the emulator I would have donated for suddenly disappearing.
Maybe I'm a minority here, but I really think waiting for the official SDK is the best idea yet.

That looks kinda horrible. Native stuff will probably be pretty cool but emulation of physical buttons seems dodgy at best.

Hmm iPhone... If I was offered a choice of buying one I'd pass it and get a Phone and a PSP instead. I mean on the PSP there's SOOOO many friggen emulators :D.
