Dosugus Cushion From Art. Lebedev: Look Closely (Optimus.jpg?)
Posted by Sean Fallon at 12:00 PM on December 19, 2007
As a cushion, the DOS-inspired Dosugus from Art. Lebedev is definitely something I can see resting my geeky head on. But the most interesting thing about it is what is actually listed in the directories. Optimus.jpg, Trojan.exe, and "pron" to name a few. Is it just a joke or are they trying to say something here? You decide. Available now for $28. [Product Page via TFTS]

I like the PRON directory?

There are two things that let it down, HOROSCOPE.EXE and WISH_LIST.txt have too many characters in their name (true DOS only supports 8 characters), and of course the lowercase .txt extension.
Otherwise this is a truely cool and geeky product.

@dysthymia: Hmmm.
My Mother-in-law has some automated stitching machines she uses.
I wonder if she could get the font right though...

very nice. Im sure our girlfriend/mom/sis/wife can make one for us. Wouldn't be very Typeface looking but the idea would be the same, no?

It's a cute idea, but the shipping definitely kills it. Are there weird export/customs restrictions that would warrant that sort of money?

Shipping involving Russia sucks. :(

@strictnein: You bet your ass. Also HOROSC~1.EXE would be more appropriate.
Guess it's DOS 7.

WISH_LIST.TXT?
Don't they mean WISH_L~1.TXT?

@Sqube: Yeah, expensive, but you have to remember that it's protected by a user-friendly GUI and shipped inside a vacuum-sealed bit of plastic with a sticker on it advising you of the generous licensing provisions for use of both the GUI and the pillow that you accept once you tear the plastic.
These things cost money, you know.

it's kind of a stretch, but does the directory list spell out "SLEEP"? kind of? the "s" and "l" really suck if that is the case...

@Sqube: Oh yeah, those things aren't that heavy, especially not sixty bucks heavy. Art. Lebedev can shove it up their optimus.

@blueharv: Art.Lebedev strikes again. What is there in a pillow that warrants ~$60 of shipping? I mean, it's its own protection for fuck's sake!

I went to buy one of these suckers right away, but the sneaky part is that those shysters at Art. Lebdedev want to punch you in the guts to the tune of $57 for postage. That brings the grand total to $85. I backed out a that point. For around $30 this piece of mass produced is worth it. For $85 it ain't.

Available now? I'm guessing that means he started the design sometime around the time of DOS 6.2.

The "Kate.JPG" right above the "Optimus.JPG" makes one wonder which is more likely: a girl who loves Tranformers or a Transformers geek with a girlfriend.
Plus, look at the amount of bytes that are free. That pillow has alot more storage available.
I guess it could use more pillow bytes.

So Kate.JPG doesn't belong in [Girls], [Pron], [Pics], [Photos]? What the hell is she doing in that pic?

What is CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT doing in the \always\ folder instead of root? And, I would comment on numerous naming convention violations, but that has already been pointed out (although, you guys did miss one). ;)

Or you could just use Cafepress.com, design your own custom DOS directory listing image and create your own. $15.99 + $7.00 shipping. It lacks the stitching, but saves you money...

It all makes a kind of sense except maybe the [DOORS] directory. Maybe its some kind of play on the [WINDOWS] directory?

Shipping price is not Art Lebedev's fault. Just recently I sent ONE SHEET OF PAPER document to Moscow using FedEx, and it was $79 for 5 days delivery. Can you believe that?
UPS was even more expensive - $130, including $14 "gas charge".
What's wrong with mail between US and Russia, I wonder...
