"Chat" Concept is Like Living a Comic Strip
Posted by Sean Fallon at 1:20 PM on December 18, 2007
Artist Aram Bartholl's "Chat" concept enables users to engage in a conversation via brief text messages that are typed on a keyboard and projected onto a comic strip-like voice bubble overhead —not unlike the Voice Bubble Mirror from earlier this year. Even though the keyboard is wireless, a technician is needed to secure the bubble behind the speaker, so the whole project falls short of greatness. A video of Chat in action is available after the break.
On the other hand, if the bubble could be mounted on a hat and the text could be punched in using a mobile phone or something similarly compact, it could be a fun way to engage in a conversation. Until you were tired of looking like an idiot that is. [Project Page via Make]

And here we have another invention that serves as little more than mental masturbation. Sure it's clever, but it's certainly not useful.

wtf? No, seriously, what makes this even remotely a good idea? Though, I do see the potential for use in advertising, or something of the sort...but still.

Y'know, that video might be a bit more interesting . . . if he wasn't always staring at his hands to type.

Hey look! If you encase the wireless keyboard in steel, you can use it as a weapon on the streets too!

@omg-ponies: Although it's pretty useless to use it all the time, I can think of a couple of situations where it could be useful.
1) communicating with someone who is deaf whe you don't know sign language
2) when you want to broadcast a message to a lot of people who can't hear you e.g. driving in a car, listening to a portable applepod or any other mp2 player

What about as a classroom application so everyone can talk over each other without talking over each other?

I think this is sweet! Not everything has to be "useful". I can see this as being a statement.
