All PS1 Titles Now Playable on The PSP via Remote Play
Posted by Sean Fallon at 1:20 PM on December 19, 2007
It appears that todays new PSP and PS3 firmware update includes a "secret" Remote Play enhancement that allows users to play all PS1 downloadable titles and discs on the PSP. If you ask me, it is about time that Sony got in on all of the firmware hacking that has been going on. [Playstation Forums]

namely: manhunt.

@topcatticus: You make a great point.
Okay maybe not so much with the emulation, but that still represent part of the effort that's been put into the PSP by developers.

Except that by allowing emulation by homebrew, they're presenting a conflict of interests: on one hand, they're asking developers to make games available for a fee for download, and on the other they're opening the door (well, holding the door open, at least) for piracy, etc. Doesn't present a very enticing case for the publishers, then.

I can see how Sony wants to stay in control, but seriously, look at all the incredible work that's been done in the areas of Homebrew and Emulation, not to mention multimedia, web apps, all KINDS of stuff, and DESPITE Sony's constant attempts to lock them out!
Sony would be so much stronger of they could find a way to enfold the PSP Community (caps there on purpose) into their own advances that are no less incredible.
You'd REALLY have something there, as opposed to the "Us and Them" mentality they have allowed to exist in some areas.

This is great news... Now lets open up other functions like PS2 games and I will be a happy camper.

This is not likely to remain an open feature. There's too much money to be made in selling portable versions of PS1 games. Also, has anyone heard whether the 40 GB PS3 will get backwards compatibility?
Re Strider and Top, Sony is also a media company so, they are actually fighting within themselves whether to take a tough stance on pirating or take more of an Apple-like stance. It's a tough situation for them, but on the other hand I'm not crying for a multi-billion dollar company.

I officially don't care until they make PS1 games downloadable on psp without the ps3 as a middle man. why is this impossible to do (or am I wrong)?

@strider_mt2k: They should have hired the guys that developed such tools and hacks. PSP would be helluva lot better if it had this guys on a proper payroll working to develop new features!
And emulation, a conflict of interests? Why not do it a la "xbox marketplace" or the Wii (forgot the name of their equally fascinating and cool tool to get new retro games)...?

I'm still waiting for PSP2 with 16/32GB SSD and no UMD to add unnecessary moving parts.

I don't quite understand what this is saying. I clicked through to the forum, and they're talking about Remote Playing Blu-Ray and PS3 games... that doesn't sound related.
Are they saying that with a PS3, a PSP, and an arbitrary game disc for PS1, you can download that PS1 game to the PSP and play it?
Is this actually a Sony-supported option, or a hack?
