A Robotic Jurassic Park Coming to Dubai
Posted by Sean Fallon at 1:00 PM on December 18, 2007
When it comes to Dubai and attracting wealthy tourists, the word "restraint" is seldom used. Perhaps that is why it is not surprising that the locals are building a $1 billion theme park that will feature over 100 animatronic dinosaurs of 40 different species. Dubbed "Restless Planet," the park will attempt to provide an educational experience amidst all of the Vegas style spectacle. This will be done using history themed rides and robots / habitats that represent an accurate portrayal (based on current knowledge) of what life was like millions of years ago.
The robots will also be capable of interacting with guests by following them with their eyes or lunging at them as the walk by. Even though you would think that keeping the wraps on a 500,000 square foot park would be difficult, further details are scarce. However, the park is scheduled to open in late 2008 in City of Arabia, Dubai. [City of Arabia and Cosmos]

I went to Dubai in August - very interesting/crazy place!! This dinosaur park sounds cool - such a dubai thing to build! Their new airport (going to be the largest one in the world) is meant to be costing 1 trillion dollars to build!! At the moment dubai isn't much of a holiday destination in my opinion, but with things like this hopefully it'll become a better a stopover hub.

Restless Planet is right! Dubai over-the-topness never ends!
Don't they have the largest (and only) indoor giant skiing simulation thing?
Put Restless Planet in Orlando, Animal Kingdom would get a sudden boom.

I can imagine a grizzled Kent Hovind staggering out of prison a few years from now, then flying to Dubai to witness a rehashing of his fucking stupid Dinosaur Adventure Land, but this time, without the tax fraud.

dear Dubai, please dont become another vegas.
You have no heart for poor people around the world and conscience for what your actions bring. You treat your own workers like crap, only because they are not from your land, and your own people with limited access to democratic building process.
The fact that you can pay for it does not mean you should. Here is something you can do with your money: become a hearted leader in the middle east, research and fund democratic and civil society initiatives in your land that will make your own people proud and in generations to come will look back and be proud of your achievements. Please don't become another Vegas or in your very good days, another Luxembourg. You think you will attract rich people, but lets face it, how many times you think people want to go to a place in the middle of the nowhere to spend money. once, twice? tops.
Once you have started with some of those changes, yes build this thing and invite the world leaders to see what the oil money can do for the world. And if at some point I have money I will go and visit you.
with love. the guy that for a moment got confused and believed posted this in craigslist.

Wonder how the ant-evolutionist Muslims are gonna gloss over the 6000 year old earth problem.
Religions breed a lot of ignorance.
Sod it, lets get the robo-dino overlords to sort it all out.

Dear Dubai, please continue whatever you are doing! :)
You have full control over people and you try your best not to let theft and crimes spread like in Vegas and lots of other countries. And treat people as you always do; many would think it is crap, but they don't know what life is, they keep judging based on their point of view and living; if I was rich I would feel sorry for people who work at a bakery oven, but if I was poor I would be so happy and maybe jealous to work like them; the world is big and when 30,000 Indians accept to come to a "heartless" (whatever) place like Dubai, they must be living a better life than in their own countries; if the sun is bothering them here, in their countries crime, theft, taxes, and lame laws are bothering them even in sleep.
Do whatever you want with the money; we aren't anymore living in 1960 to become a leader of some group of people in the WW2 standards! I have full believe that all of us people who are watching what's going in Dubai don't really know what is going behind the plans and deals, and I also believe that I have no right for judging what you do; you are giving me more than what any other place on this earth would give me; Dubai, become a leader of yourself and people and let the rest of the world enjoy killing and hating each other. Invest on tourism, people from all around the world need to leave their boring countries for a change; Dubai, be the living room of the world, not the kitchen or the backyard; and let us face it, if you keep going on like this, people are not going to help but come 7 and 8 and more times to watch whats new; and this is what I've seen happening from all kinds and types of people.
Keep going like how you like Dubai, I will support you; keep building a place where the words "black and white" are meaningless unlike some other countries. And when I want I will visit you anytime, for your doors are open for guests, in the old lovely Arabic style, not like a Vegas style.
With all the love. The guy that for all the moments will never get confused of what is good and what is bad.

@DYSTHYMIA - Qatar is using its money to build its economy and educate its people, unlike Dubai - but maybe we can get Dubai to fund a "Democratic building process" in the US, since we seem to have forgotten a bit of that.
@AB3 - Not likely, Dubai is a very popular tourist destination for Europeans.

Erm, sauropods couldn't lift their necks nearly that high. The general consensus these days is that they were grazers, not browsers. That picture is a bit... off.
@dysthymia:
TFSU. It's their money and they can do what they want. Who are you to say what they aught to do. They can be philanthropic and completely trash whatever they're being philanthropic about (as history has shown us time and time again), if they so wish.
However, a better idea is continuing their over-the-top awesomeness. Trust me, it makes sense.

Vegas is becoming like Dubai--a place only for the super rich. That will ultimately lead to it's demise. Gone are the old time smoke filled casino's (not that I'm advocating tobacco). Now I just go to freemont street, where Las Vegas is the way it was meant to be.
Now in Vegas they are just putting up these prima donna Abercrombie and Fitch casino's like the Trump tower, the Wynn and so on. No more classic Las Vegas. No more fun. That's where Dubai is headed.

@Hardcore1: loool, who said that there is no education investments in Dubai? Look at the Knowledge Village! Oh God, that village makes you want to learn stuff that you never liked in school! Adding to that, the many new cities that are rising, all built with full care of number of schools per area and universities per new mini-city... Adding to this and that, just 20 KM away from Dubai, a fully equipped knowledge city in Sharjah (Another Emirate in the UAE) with 14 Universities and institutes, and more to come in the coming years.
All of this and you still think that Dubai or the UAE doesn't give a good care for education?! Come on man, I for once was thinking that the UAE has lots of educational institutes, I mean A LOT.

I especially look forward to the rampant sex tourism when the oil money runs out.
See you in 30 years!

Saad Rabia

@shoegazer: sex is nice, and if you mean sex trafficking, here is a list of countries that enjoy Sex Trade:
1. The USA (#1): over 400,000 each year and this trading generates over $1 billion for the USA alone.
2. Australia: over 30% of the world's sex trafficking deals are done inside and within the Australian soil.
3. The UK: According to research conducted by the University of North London's Child and Women Abuse Studies Unit, six out of 10 women in London's brothels have been 'trafficked' from countries such as the Ukraine.
4. Netherlands: 15% and even more of the economy that runs in the Netherlands is purely from sex trafficking.
And the list goes on and on, check out this site for more information, if you know how to read:
And after all of this, the whole world amazingly wants to turn their heads to a small rising country such as Dubai and bring up a sex trading problem being done by outsiders, and completely ignoring the fact that Dubai police force are doing their best to stop it, as a matter of fact before 3 years their was an estimation of 20,000 women being used for trafficking sex and right now the number got down to 12,000!
Do you really think that all what CNN says is true?! Why don't you follow up with organizational websites, where the news are right?
If you still have a brain that can function enough I think or believe that you can solve this simple equation.

@Saad Rabia: riiight. they need your support, they count on it.
@nosauten: vegas has lots of poor people and high crime you dont see in dubai. vegas wont be even close to dubai at any point ever. not enough money invested. Like Saad rabia said, there is plenty of people with education there and that is another difference between dubai and vegas. I was thinking more in terms if who gets access to that education.
@Hardcore1: yes. The U.S. does not have a democratic process to be proud of, we all know that. But americans would never accept money from an arab coutry to fund and pay for what we have cut out of schools, or to create programs of political awareness, equal rights initiatives, civil society religious and faith education and the creation of grassroots organizations.
they have the chance, sure, it is their money lets see what else they do with it.

Man, I hope for 1 billion they can have way more than 100 animatronic dinosaurs running around the park staring and biting at me.
I want whole packs of Velociraptors hunting me as I cruise through the park in my jeep, and lots of grazing Triceratops suddenly grouping together in a protective circle and fending off the T Rex, or even more frightening Spinosaurus.
Then there should be hundreds of little critters running around trying to avoid the swooping terridactals and crocodiles lunging at them from watering holes. Hope that's where they are going... that would be so cool.

I want to see super real bionic dinosaurs running around; I want to be scared and terrified by watching or coming close to them, I want to live the Jurassic Park dream, for real. :)
I don't want Dinosaurs which only keep moving their heads and their voices are clearly coming out of their butts from some lame old style hidden stereos; I want something just like in the video they have in the website of the project.
Real-kick-ass-blood-pumping-bionic Dinosaur action. Pray with people. :D (Let me hear you say Amen)
