$5,000 in Electricity = Lots of Christmas Lights
Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:45 AM on December 31, 2007
Over the 52 festive days that this Canadian house stays eye-blindingly lit, the owner pays about $100 a day, or about $5,000. An in addition to his large donation to the power company, the owner also pulls in over $30,000 in gifts for charity.
Hit the very end of the video for a neat comparison block shot—his poor neighbour's house, shrouded in shadow, adorns a few, pitiful icicle lights. The only thing we'd recommend for the wonderland of bulbs is a little glowing reindeer mutilation. [iflim via digg]

he is creating a nuisance for his neighborhood and draining our natural resources. I say Bah Humbug to this and all other pointless light displays.

@Khamel: You should be banned for a pun that bad. ;)
While this looks neat, I would hate to be his neighbor. The blinding light all night long would, probably, make me quite cranky.
Quite cranky indeed.

if hes got the money more power to him. and if he gets people to donate above what they normally would (im sure not all of that 30k in presents would have not been donated otherwise) then thats even better.

52 days so $100 per day is right. WOW thats a heck of a display. I though I had a lot of light. I have about 4700-4800 bulbs up but mine are 100% LED so my total power consumption is less than 2 100 watt bulbs (185 watts)
I only wish I could afford to put on a display like that. I love the smiles it gives people as they come by to look. Makes them happy even if just for a few minutes. Bonus I send a message you can do this and still be green (low power) and low waste they should last forever.

There's a historic house in Portland, OR that they put a Million lights on every year. They call it ........... The house of a Million Lights. To say it's bright is an understatement. You can see the glow from it several miles away.

In a time when there has been a war on Christmas, I salute this guy. On the other hand, I'm sure there is a lawyer out there that could get me money for saying I'm offended by this display because I'm not a Christian.

Candy Cane Lane in Edmonton...many houses all dressed up in their lighted, Christmas glory...apparently this guy has the brightest, most jolly (needless to say, least energy efficient outfit)of them all. Regardless, the avenue is impressive and a staple of any pre-Christmas city tour.
