SmartSink Uses Height-Calculating Software to Save Your Back

Posted by Addy Dugdale at 11:45 PM on December 28, 2007

sink_1.jpg
MIT student Leonardo B has come up with an idea for a sink that positions itself depending on the height of the user and adjusts its temperature depending on what you are putting in it. (This is useful when you are nudging 6'0", whilst your husband struggles to hit the 3'6" mark*, even when he is wearing what he refers to as "gypsy shoes.") Video, plus explanation of how the sink works, below.

This Is What a Nokia E90 Blasted With a Shotgun Looks Like

Posted by Addy Dugdale at 9:00 PM on December 28, 2007

n2.jpg Someone blasted their Nokia E90 with a 12-bore shotgun. And then decided to put the bent and twisted piece of telephony up for sale on eBay. As you do. And then someone decided to buy the remains of the smartphone for $US20.50. As you (or I) probably wouldn't. Gunshot gallery is below.

shotgunnede904.jpgshotgunnede90.jpgshotgunnede901.jpg

The eBay blurb describes it as Bluetooth Enabled, Calendar, e-mail, GPS Navigation, Internet Browser, MP3 Player, PDA-PC Sync, SMS-Text Messaging, Speakerphone, Unlocked, Video, Smartphone. And then he goes and tells us it doesn't even turn on. Tsk. [eBay via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]

Are Apple Stores a Retail Utopia?

Posted by Sean Fallon at 1:20 PM on December 28, 2007

apple_store2.jpgIs going into an Apple Store like entering some sort of Plesantville where everyone is happy and things are always perfect? The New York Times seems to think so. According to a recent article, customers are enchanted by "relentlessly smiling employees," interesting architecture, and an atmosphere that feels like more of an event than a retail store. While I'm sure that there will be some differing opinions on those points, some of the figures are hard to argue with.

Apparently, 20% of Apple's revenue is derived from its physical stores –which represents a 42% increase over figures from the 4Q of 2006. They also generate sales at a rate of about $US4000 per square foot a year. Just a few of the reasons why their stock is up 135% overall. So, the question is do your experiences visiting or working for Apple stores support these claims and figures? [NYT]

Chair Lifts and Separates Your Butt Cheeks For Maximum Comfort

Posted by Sean Fallon at 12:30 PM on December 28, 2007

ayur_chair.jpgThe makers of this unique looking Ayur Chair claim that it can provide "perfect lumbar support while ergonomically lifting and separating your butt checks for optimum comfort." Since I have never sat in one, I can't really back-up this claim. However, I can see how it would be beneficial when you have a serious beefer on deck and you need to do a little "lifting and separating" to ensure that everyone else in the office doesn't hear it. Is that worth the $550 price tag? Probably not, unless you have some serious gastrointestinal issues. [Product Page via Electro Plankton via Geekologie]

So lets get to the newness shall we? Digital Foci is set to introduce three new frames at this years CES. GPS Jesus Nabs Christmas Thief

Posted by Sean Fallon at 11:00 AM on December 28, 2007

teen_arrested2.jpgJust before Christmas we learned that a baby Jesus statue in a Bal Harbor Florida nativity scene was being equipped with GPS to ensure that a theft earlier in the month would not be repeated. Apparently, a similarly equipped statue from a nativity in Wellington Florida actually resulted in the arrest of 18 year old Danielle Santino after she stole the statue on December 26th. She has since been charged with grand theft. So what is going on here? Is there some sort of underground baby Jesus crime ring terrorizing southern Florida? [Local 6 via Fark]

We already know that there's going to be a big ass TV there (and you can bet we're going to cover the hell out of it), but what are you interested in? Next-gen Blu-ray/HD DVD players? Weird stuff from Chinese manufacturers? Throw it out here and we'll do our best to bring it to you.

Broemmel even added some special touches in the form of Blue LED headlight eyes that move when you turn the handlebar and a jaw that bites down when you squeeze the left brake (no flames shooting out of the mouth?).

Windows Home Server Corrupts Data When Saving From Certain Apps

Posted by Jason Chen at 9:40 AM on December 28, 2007

We've had nothing but good luck in moving files to and from our Windows Home Server machine in Windows Explorer, but there's a data corruption bug present that will kill your data if you're writing stuff over the network directly from certain apps. The apps? Outlook, OneNote, Vista Photo Gallery, Live Photo Gallery, Money and some Torrent apps and Quicken/QuickBooks as well. That doesn't sound good. Our advice is to save stuff locally before copying it onto the Home Server. [Microsoft via ComputerWorld]

A group called MAD (Motorists Against Detection) has been smashing those boxes for the past seven years in retailation. In fact, the guerilla group claims to have obliterated 1000 of the cameras, and have big plans to step up their attacks on the eavesdropping gadgets.

Two upcoming Samsung phones, the F490 and P720, were unveiled at some press event in the Ukraine a little while ago. Thanks to the magic of video and the internet, you can now see the in action as fondled by some press dude that was lucky enough to attend the event. Watch as he manhandles the phones in a way that would make you punch him in the face if that were your sister, and not a phone he was grubbing over. As for the phones, they're quite nice, and look similar to the F700/U940 we're getting on Verizon soon. [Unwired View]

Cowon N3 PMP has 7-inch Screen, GPS, DivX/XviD Support

Posted by Jason Chen at 7:20 AM on December 28, 2007

n3.jpgAs dapreview points out, this just-announced Cowon N3 looks quite like the Cowon Q5W we reviewed a few weeks ago. The most noticeable difference comes from the fact that this has a 7-inch screen as opposed to the Q5's 5-incher. Other than that, there's no internal memory—you have to use one of two SDHC slots to add storage—and GPS and DMB (portable TV) support. The good news is that this does support DivX/XviD and all the other video and audio codecs the Q5W does, meaning that you'll never have to go a second without entertainment. Ever. [Dapreview]

Konaka Shower Clean Suit Washes the Day Away

Posted by Jason Chen at 6:20 AM on December 28, 2007

showerclean1.jpgWe often only carry one suit and one change of underwear on business trips no matter how long they are, but this Japanese Konaka Shower Clean suit will make meetings with us slightly less disgusting. All you have to do to clean these suits is to hang them up, spray them with soap and water, and let them dry for two hours. You don't even have to iron them. This won't do anything about the underpants, but we suspect that version will cost a bit more than the $300 to $450 these do (if only for the added stain-protecting technology). [Konaka via Dvice]

The company is offering a $500 rebate on its HC4900 LCD 1080p home theater projector, for which it claims 1000 ANSI lumens of brightness (plenty bright for home theater) and a 7000:1 contrast ratio. Pick it up for $US2495 online or at a retail outlet (and you can find it for even less than that if you look around), download the rebate form here, send it in within 30 days of your purchase, and you'll receive $500 in the mail. Total price, $US1995 or less. Sweet deal and the lowest price for a 1080p projector we've seen yet. [Mitsubishi]

Plasma-Lift Conference Table Does a Leno-Like Sprout of a 42-Inch Plasma Display

You'd think for $US25,000, they could at least go with solid wood, but this is a lacquered veneer finish on this big 400-lb table. Anyway, it has a nice rack underneath for computers, componentry and such. Other niceties include a built-in camera, speakers and microphones for conferencing of all types.
