15 Below: A Transfoming All-Weather Jacket For the Homeless
Posted by Sean Fallon at 10:40 AM on December 20, 2007
Being homeless would suck, but being homeless in Canada during the winter would suck even harder. A Toronto ad firm called Taxi aims to help around 3,000 of these unfortunate souls (and drum up a little business while they are at it) using their new 15 Below jacket. The lightweight jacket was designed to be waterproof, windproof and capable of withstanding extreme cold temperatures with the help of pockets that can be insulated with crumpled newspaper.More info and an additional pic after the break.
The name 15 Below represents the temperature at which Canada issues a cold weather warning. That's plenty cold, but the jacket has gone above and beyond that mark with successful tests at temperatures of up to -30° Celsius. When the weather is warm, the whole jacket can be converted into a backpack and the plentiful pockets become useful for storing personal items. Taxi plans on distributing the jackets for free to the homeless, which is why the shameless self-promotion can be easily overlooked. [Taxi via Treehugger]

Of course, they could always get a job.
I thought The Socialist Republic of Canada had no homeless?

I think I'll go stand on the street pretending to be homeless and see if I can't score myself one of these. Why do they get a prize for being homeless?
Before someone kills me, I was kidding.

I must live in the FUCKING COLDEST PLACE IN THE WORLD, then. It's been nice here for the last couple days, but it was -38 without windchill last week.

@Barry99705: Uh we use Celsius up here in canada, but isn't -35 F actually -37 C? Because if so, you're living in the FUCKING COLDEST PLACE IN THE WORLD. I live in Ottawa, and we only get down to those temperatures with wind chill. Where the hell are you?

Pretty cool idea(heh). It's been in the -35F range the last couple days around here. Even in my good fleece lined winter jacket it's cold. I couldn't imagine being stuck out in this stuff for too long. Hopefully the pockets are actually insulated with normal insulation. Besides your ears, the toes and fingers are the first to freeze.

@bbfreak: God, don't brag. It's like living and breathing fucking soup down in Florida. I swear, I felt like living mildew. It was disgusting being there. Dear God, just give me -10 to +10 degrees celcius for the rest of my life and I'll be really really happy. No frikkin -42 degrees with windchill. No 37 degrees celsius in the sun.

@Sloth: Don't forget the crazy people, because everybody knows all the crazy people come from California. Besides, the humidity really isn't that bad, I'll take it any day vs earthquakes or snow.

I heard from a friend living in Tokyo that there is (or was) a clothing line in Japan that was designing garments based on a "post-apocalypse" theme. One of their jackets had the above-mentioned compartments to stuff newspapers into, as well.
I knew what you know 5 years ago.

Poor Floridans indeed! Combine that weather with 80% humidity, and not to ask what summer humidity is, and you get an everyday Sauna!
I'll take those same exact temperatures and live in Southern California, if you don't mind the Smog & Earthquakes....

This jacket is pretty awesome. It would be great if they did a promotion like the OLPC people. I buy one, and they donate an additional one to a local shelter or homeless charity.

@bbfreak: yeah, I realized that later on, my bad. :p That means my second language is not good. Also means, now idiots *everywhere* think the only reason why we have people living on the streets, is because they don't want to get a job.
@kavendano14: dude you made me laugh my coffee out via my nasal orifices (= nostrils for americans). Nah, since I didn't get the comment of the day, Im not in the mood. I better go to bed and try harder tomorrow.

@dysthymia: Well not just a lacking of a job, but sometimes people just mismanage money stupidly. Though there are the occasions when something goes beyond your control. Happened to me and my folks back in 96. We were homeless for exactly two months, but mostly the majority of the homeless especially the men are perfectly content to live that way.

or aboriginal people for short. (i am in sooooo much trouble now!!)

Oh the mirth and merryment of being homeless!
What a douchenozzel, pretending to be homeless by standing in a pile of crumpled newspaper.
I give them props for advertising and helping at the same time, but that second picture just gives me the spine tingles.

I live in montreal, and think that this would be a great idea. Every day i pass at least 10 homeless people on the way to class, and most have less protection than this. i would love to be able to buy the jackets directly from TAXI and donate them myself.
@DSADDICT: yes, you are in trouble now.

I was homeless in a cold area for awhile and I have to applaud this idea for being the dumbest damned thing I have ever seen. If they wanted to help the friggin homeless, instead of giving them a coat, hire them to make the coats and give them a place to stay. Amazing how much effort some people put into being a jackass.

I was thinking that we could turn the homeless into tires. So that we would still have homeless, but we could use them on our cars.
