Zune Flash Player in the Urban Jungle
Posted by Haroon Malik at 2:00 AM on November 11, 2007
Zunerama community member, ed, claims to have already purchased a new Zune flash player, days before the expected official release. Apparently, the player was acquired from an Office Depot in St. Louis. (Again, if any of you could somehow manage to get one to us before the launch, we'll cough up for them). Ed has not had much fun time with his new player, as the device will not function without an impending firmware release! Check out the blurry gallery below:
Our man with the spanking flash player had the cheek to call Microsoft and demand what the deal was. They told him the firmware will be released on Tuesday, until then he was told to be patient, as for now he's holding "a bit of the future." Holding a bit of the future could well be dangerous, as we all know from Marty's shenanigans when he purchased that book in the future and brought it back to the present, thus enabling him to make a killing on sports bets—but it went pear shaped, didn't it Marty? Yes, yes it did. Respect the future, people. [Zunerama]

well, I am glad to see Zune getting it's footing finally, just wish Creative would get as much press time as MS and Apple.

Seriously, seeing it actually makes me angry -- I think it would be perfect if not for that!

Seriously wtf, why is there such a big boundary around the screen? Stretch it to the edge!

I work at Best Buy and got to play with one yesterday. It's size is very similar to the old Nanos but the screen is crystal clear. Waaaay better than the Nano screen. Still has the radio as well as a bunch of songs, videos and pictures preloaded on it. I was pretty impressed with the over all unit.

@Rob C:
Yeah, so when another company makes a better product than Apple, it's a cheap knock-off.
I think you have some serious insecurities to work out.

@Rob C: You either slide through the fabric of your pants or click it. Ituses both you know.
And the old 2nd gen nanos were definatly better than the fat 2rd gens.
Besides everyone fails to mention what this one had over the new nanos. (Wireless Snyc/Share, FM Tuner, lighter, ect.

It's really funny because the zune always reminds me of those cheap ipod knock-offs...
cmon, that zune mini IS the old iPod nano, just with a little longer screen...
and how does that matte piece of plastic control the damn this?? I can't imagine changing songs while this is in your pocket.

Microsoft should have come out with these four years ago. Hell, even last year would have helped.

@SneakerFiend: No offense, but I would use this thing primarily for music; there really isnt enough space for "real" video

The new screens are glass, not plastic. I just picked up a new Zune home av pack and leather case for the Zune80. The new Zune dock has component video outputs right on the back. Very nice...

The flash Zunes look snazzy if you want a flash player. I like the library-in-my-pocket HDD players, myself. Call me when the 80 gets leaked, yo.

i just still cant understand how people think they are professional enough to "judge" the player's material based on blurry pics

I saw the new Zunes first hand (at a sneak peek Zune event) and I can report that they are not made from a cheap plastic material. I personally thought the material felt like they could stand up to more scratches than their iPod equivalents: the Clasic and the Nanos. Most of the new Zunes have a matte finish except for the red flash Zune, which had a glossy finish which I didn't care for because it was more prone to fingerprint smudges.
The new Zunes also supposedly have the doubleshot effect, but I didn't notice it, so I can't comment if they actually do or don't. Here's a Microsoft blog that talks about the new doubleshot effect:
[zuneinsider.com]
As for an iPod Touch-killer, these new Zunes are not and they aren't meant to be. But I can't wait until Microsoft does release an "iTouch"-killer, because for me it would be better. I use Media Center all the time, so it would make more sense for me to get a Microsoft-style iTouch so I could sync all my FREE recorded TV from my computer to my device - like how I do with my current Zune. If I bought a iPod Touch, I wouldn't be able to sync my TV content as easily.

What caught my eye was how small it is.
How the hell are you going to enjoy a video on that thing with that screen.
Why didnt they make an ipod touch killer :-P
The Zune is sexy tho. i love zune's and i love ipod touches (however its spelled)

Huh... I've been wondering, but did they ditch doubleshot? Some of the pictures suggest it's there, but some don't, and I don't really trust pictures for capturing a human-ish visual effect anyways.

Looks like Microsoft really wanted Tuesday to be the first day anyone can play with their new toys. On one hand I want to say good for them for essentially "bricking" their new hardware until a firmware update is retrieved. At least this way they should be able to semi-accurately measure how many of the devices are being used after purchase since they have to "phone home."
On the other hand, consumers just dropped a pretty penny on the device, albeit a few days early, and should be able to use it out of the box. I can't imagine how many false returns stores may get just because there's an underlying problem with the host PC (bad USB, anyone?) and not the device itself. Ooh, or maybe this is a plot by Woot to become Microsoft's refurb channel for the Zune 2's! :-)

Nice to see the Zune as a flash player, but the plastic just looks cheap. Let's hope it holds up to wear and tear.

I should have taken some pics...We got ours in a few days ago...I thought the thing was a fake demo! they are so light. But the video looks pretty good. There are a couple of new main menu sections, like Podcasts. And it seems "Community" is going to be a lot more important.

We can draw conclusion that iPod photographers are rather professional compared to Zune ones. Damn that looks cheap plastic. Looks exactly like some old soviet electronics I've seen.

did this dude purposefully put his fingers on the screens right before the photo WTF, the iPhone sneak peaks are spotless normally... but the zune looks like . someone dipped their fingers in a vat of oil before they touched it all over the screen.
Even my old Zune30 doesn't have smudges like the one in the image unless my 8 year old brother gets it after having his fingers in his mouth I mean WTF is up. come on giz

Boy, I bet you'd never see such an unflattering pic of an iPod on Gizmodo. You think the photographer could have made the Zune look any worse?
If this were an iPod sneak peak the text would be something closer to "a look into the way distant future...can we be patient, you bet we can. Whatever you want Steve."
