World's Most Expensive Gift Card Buys a $5 Million Jet Ride
Posted by Haroon Malik at 3:15 AM on November 18, 2007
Girls and boys, Christmas-is-a-coming and you need gift ideas pronto. Socks, hand knitted jumpers and CDs just don't cut it, but how about a gift voucher? May we suggest, a gift voucher that entitles the recipient to private jet travel, which costs only $5 million!
If daddy is feeling in a particularly giving mood this festive season, you may be unwrapping a pass to Halcyon's on-demand private charter service, but daddy is going to have to be richer and more stupid than your average rich and stupid person (Paris Hilton.) The gift card, titled the Holiday Dream Card, may be used for one-way trips, e.g. for escaping to Rio with all the drug money; round trips, e.g. flying yourself back once you are busted, (beats taking con air); or alternatively, it can be used to show off, which would prove the recipient is the big dawg, but is probably trying to compensate for a tiny twinkle in the willy department—hey, we have to make ourselves feel better somehow. Oh wait, that is a tiny twinkle in my willy department. If only I had Halcyon's Holiday Dream card to compensate. Santa, please? [Bornrich]

@twoohfour: Yeah. Nothing wrong in wanting something. Whether or not I'm going to get one is entirely a different question. Who knows. I might win the Powerball or something.

@ugadawg: Oh yeah, the one that you "want"?
Hahaha....

@xenti: It all depends on the model. I do that the G550, the one that I want, is going for a cool 38. That's empty. I know a guy who flies one and tells me that the owner put that much down and then 3.1 for options. Lord knows how much I'd love to be a passenger in one of those sleek executive planes that fly faster and higher than your average commercial liner. Imagine flying at 560kts at FL510. Mmmm...makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

It costs 5 million because the seats are made out of Pure Russian Vaginas. That stuff is like their Beluga Caviar (which they serve on the flight), very difficult to obtain and thus of high value.

You could buy your own Gulfstream for 20.

Now now mr. org, those environmentalists are just doing their part, they raise awareness... that's important its like super duper important, without awareness the rest of us would not be aware, so of course they need to rape and pillage, and waste... duh. Plus being an environmentalist is a rough life, those huge SUV's are super susceptible to rollover and flying around in private jets all the time increases the likelihood your plane will crash, but alas, they are so great to sacrifice for the rest of us...

Now you can fly on a private jet, just like all those environmentalists telling us we need to dismantle society and live in caves!

The attempt at being glib, seems to have revealed some inner hate issues.
Sure, the money would be better used by putting it into a CD and using the interest to fund flights each year, but someone that has $5M to drop on a gift card, already knows that. (Or hired someone that knows that) :)

Why are you bitter just because some people have the means to give such gifts? Be thankful for what you have and what you can give, don't belittle someone just because they might have something you do not.

at that price, it better last a lifetime or at least let you keep the plane...
those private jets can't possibly cost more than $5Mil...

$5 million? That's a ripoff. I know of another service that only costs like $150 K for 25 hours of private jet in-flight time. Marquis Jets all the way!

@xenti:
you aren't taking into account pilots, fuel, insurance, airport fees, maintenance/storage, etc
have fun with that gulfstream sitting ON your driveway =)

@frigg: Yes.
Personally, I'd prefer to invest all that money and live my life on the interest, and travel first class all over the world. But then I'm not the super rich dude that's going to be buying this gift card when he knows the recipient would rather just have a jet for the same price.

I think 5 million is a VERY generous amount considering that this is a gift of fractional jet ownership. When you redeem this card you select the type of jet, whether or not you will be sharing empty seats on a leg, and how quickly you want your jet ready for flight. The prices can vary based on length of flight, if the airline is dead-heading back and at the last minute you decide to pay for a leg that was once going to be an empty one, and whether or not you want to wait 12, 8, or 4 hours for your jet. I think on average a charter flight runs about 10 to 20k a trip. Out of 5 million, I think that's a lot of flight time AND time away from the TSA, luggage getting lost, no leg room what so ever, being on the airline's schedule instead of yours, and having a bunch of annoying pax on board (i.e. babies and kids that kick the back of your seat). Screw living off interest in a time like this.

@Paris Hilton: LOL
Yea wouldn't it be cheaper to buy an actual jet?

@tin: Har har! Yeah so I sound like Paris Hilton. That's hot! Whatever, lol. Not really. There are so many costs associated with having your own. Hanger fees, insurance, maintenance, fuel, crew, repair, and so on. When you have fractional ownership you don't feel the brunt of those fees. Those costs are spread out among the clients of the company. So overall it's cheaper. Especially if you don't fly often.
I know this because my bf is an executive charter pilot plus aviation is another passion of mine in addition to really cool AFFORDABLE gadgets. :-D
