Women Ditching Tupperware Parties for Taser Parties?
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 8:05 AM on November 14, 2007
Local 6, who brought us the Spider-Man pepper spray bracelet, today is all over the trend of women dumping Tupperware parties for Taser parties—there's still wine and cheese, but they're groping "light, stylish" metallic pink Tasers which are a "must for any modern woman" instead of boring kitchenware.
While we've questioned the need for gadgets to be small and pink for girls to get on board, to answer the question at the end of the video, yes, women should totally be arming themselves with Tasers. It's kind of hot, plus we have protection, so it's cool. [Local 6 via Tech Digest]

DAMN! I was really hoping they were trying out the tasers on each other... that would be great! And also makes me glad that neither I nor my roommates own a taser.

Just please, please, please get the pink one. Silver can too easily look like "nickel plating", and black too easily be mistaken for "gun metal blue". Police would be much more inclined to mistake the pink one for a hair dryer, and thus not shoot you.

I get "uncomfortable" sometimes when I go shopping. Does that mean I have the right to tazer every mofo I see walking past Gap?

@marie123:
this thought of weapons can be used against you can be applied to the military, doesn't mean the military is going to stop caring their weapon. the problem with tasers is that you have to get close to the person. stun guns you can get some distance.

I will be overjoyed when every asshole who ever used his strength to try to take from a woman what was not offered to him is too scared to even try.
Since having respect for fellow human beings doesn't seem to motivate proper behavior. Maybe fear of electrocution will have to.

@Maark: Maybe you'd f*cking understand if you faced the same risk of sexual assault.
If people should worry about anything its that an attacker can use your own weapon on you if they get it away from you (of course, THEY probably have a weapon already...)
Also...how many "emotional" manly men literally shoot first and ask questions later?

This couldn't have been posted at a more opportune (or inopportune) time...
Just yesterday my girlfriend noted that on her bus ride from work in Chicago some pervy degenerate sat next to her on a nearly empty bus, a little too close for her comfort, and started rubbing up on her leg. She told him to piss off and changed seats. This made me think to forgo the formality of pepper spray or a taser and get her a sawed-off shotgun for Christmas instead.

@Maark:
so you would rather have woman be disarmed and have no defense to when they need it. because of driven statistics?

@Maark: I agree. Women do have a greater tendency to let their emotions dictate their actions rather than employ logic or common sense. Remember the scene in The Lost World: Jurassic Park where the woman sees the T-Rex and suddenly just drives full speed in reverse without looking back? I would've just rolled up the windows and remained motionless.

@Husher: Because women don't really have a history of coolly applying logic in tense situations. There's a good reason why they crash more when they drive and when they fly (both military planes and consumer planes).

i am sicken that the news even questions if women should be arming them selfs with a non lethal weapon.
hell i think they should have guns.
why is it when people want to feel safer and arm them selfs people have a negative reaction?

@Nintenboy01: That was a movie, and not real life. Real life statistics show women have a high risk of assault, sexual or otherwise at some point in their lives. I think women who make the decision to be armed and defend themselves do so in an informed and not hysterical manner. If we were as reactionary as Hollywood portrays, you would all already be dead. I also think a lot of men own these, though not in Pink.

@newgalactic: You are probably right about the police not shooting men or women who buy the pink model (which looks a lot like a ladies shaver therefore making them think you are some nut perv). I think a more practical color bright yellow so I can find it in my purse in the dark.

@DangerousDac: I think "uncomfortable" in this instance is sort-of network TV censorship for "When I'm in a place I'm worried about being attacked and raped".
But if you feel the need to fend off the lascivious Gap salespeople with your tazer, that's your prerogative.

@Maark and marie123: Both of you, stop acting like children. Maark has the right to state his opinion without being attacked for it, as does Marie. If I had the power to do so, I'd sit both of you in time out.
Now, on to the topic being discussed: Wow, more people feeding on the paranoid worries about being raped. If it makes you feel more comfortable, go ahead, waste your money. But I ask you: Whatever happened to kicking them in the balls?

@Vekter: I just checked the stats and 1 out of every 3 American women will be sexually assulted in her lifetime (and 1 in every 33 men). I would hardly call it paranoia when the chances are at least 33%. Kicking the attacker in the 'nads requires position, velocity and surprise while zapping them only requires proximity.

@Curves:
As I understand it, tragically, 2 out of the 3 sexual assaults against women you mention are likely to occur by non-strangers, and very often at home in a domestic circumstance without a purse or taser bag" handy.
I think as a stop-gap self defense measure in the wild, tasers can be effective if the victim is trained in it's use. However, we seriously have to think about educating children properly so that the next generation isn't so fucked up.
