Wiimote, Rocking Horse Combined to Create Makeshift Racing Sim
Posted by Adam Frucci at 1:00 AM on November 30, 2007
These kids are little future modders, using household objects to take their gaming to the next level, and we salute them. By simply attaching a Wiimote to the back of a rocking horse, they've created some sort of crazy horse/motorcycle arcade game in their own basement. Sure, you have no access to the buttons and it only works on the kind of mediocre game that requires only the most basic of controller-twisting, but it does look like fun. And the little dude's got an admirable amount of control over his vehicle. Ride on, young modders. [Glumbert]

@Y2KGTP: They have science projects at third grade? For me it was 4th, and it wasn't too shabby either. I won 3rd placed, and beat my brother who came in 4th. o.o Whee, 5 bucks, boy did that seem like a lot of money then.

Don't be so quick to brush those kids off. Many of you forget: it's often the kids that teach parents how to use modern electronics, not vice versa.

@trampas:
Fair enough, I didn't look that close.
The point's still kinda valid though. It's a PC game not a Wii game.

That would be perfect for the Bull Racing mini-game that comes with Wii Play. You hold the remote sideways (like it is mounted on the horse) and tile left and right to steer, forward and back for fast and slow.
Wicked cool idea!

Not sure what the laptop is for, but it's not acting as a rearview mirror. It's the same screen on both.
Seems pretty real to me....to bad I had to put my spring-bound rocking horse out to pasture so many years ago...'sniffle' sure do miss you Mr. Ed 'sniffle'

@napes22: I was just about to write that. They're playing "NFS:Most Wanted" on the PC. That game isn't out for the Wii (and frankly, the graphics just give it away). The kicker was the laptop. If they had only played one of the crappy Wii racers, we might have bought that the kids did it themselves.
Anyway, good work, dad!

@SEEEB
They aren't playing a Wii game. They are using the WiiMote as a PC controller.
Don't believe me? Look at the laptop next to the TV acting as a rear view mirror. Last time I checked, Wii can't do that.

Fake. The controller is mounted sideways on the horse. Name ONE game where moving the controller forward results in a right turn...

@Y2KGTP: It's a view out or walk out basement. We have a similar setup.
I like the mod - I'll have to try something like that with my kid's toys.

1st Grade Science Fair - my dad and I made a working, full-sized solar panel. It was so effective, that I won the science fair and it was submitted to Brookhaven National Laboratory's science fair. I placed honorable mention to some plant, greenhouse shit.
