Video: New Xbox 360 Ring of Death Is Red AND Green for Holiday Cheer
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 4:10 PM on November 9, 2007
Unfortunately this isn't a Merry Christmas loopy-loo light show designed to inspire yuletide joy. Board speculation stakes it as a new error code for 360s stuffed with Falcon guts—whether it's the same hardware failure deal as before but in prettier, less depressing colours or is an entirely new error is still up in the air, but when we get some confirmation we'll let you know. @w00zzy:
Really? ..... exactly WHAT are you playing? I mean other than with yourself? Ratchet and Clank?
360 has ALL the games. Most people, IF their 360 goes bad, buy another so that they don't have to wait until their replacement comes back to keep playing. That's how good the 360 games are. Extra 360 FTW! With all the extra functionality of the 360, it's definately not a waste. Vista + 360 = FREE Tivo in every room of your house.

From my naive eyes it almost looks like a virus, why would some Microsoft programmer spend ten minutes making some error indicter like that? How some dude got a virus on his 360 I don't know, like I said I'm naive

Fanboyism aside, really, MS admits to the damned problems and actually processes returns and replacements properly.
Sony tends to tell you to go suck an egg.
Now, I'm not an HD nut, I don't give half a crap about seeing Tobey Maguire's pores in HD via some amazing next-gen Blu-Ray player, so I'm going to put this rather silly and pointless debate in terms that matter to me:
My 360 lets me rent movies, play games, download new games, and play against people all over the Internet without having to get off of my couch. I don't NEED the so-called convergent media experience that Sony is trying to sell, and frankly, I'm not buying a PS3 for the *one* game that I'm really interested in at this point.
As opposed to stoking the fanboy wars here, why don't we just all determine which console is the best fit of each of us, and stop assuming that we've chosen sides in some sort of ridiculous geek holy war in which the the retailers all win, and our bank accounts lose?
I pick my game systems based on content, not capabilities. I couldn't give one good goddamn about Cell processors and gigaflops and polygon counts and shaders, so long as the games are FUN. I'd say I'm sorry, but I'm having too much fun to care.

So after waiting 5 weeks to get my Xbox back from Microsoft this is what I should expect? Great. If my Xbox dies a 3rd time I'm officially switching over to PS3 and eBaying my box.

Who cares if it fails? They replace it for free.. and COD4 is awesome both single player and Xbox live! Mine failed and just got it back in time for COD4. Took about 1 1/2 weeks for replacement.

Imagine a world where Microsoft products do not crash...
Come on, Redmond. Get your shit together. Just because your software sucks does not mean you have to continue maknig crappy hardware, too. Or .. Maybe it does. I don't know.

Well, Well, How the mighty have fallin'. You 360 fanboys keep lying to yourselves. We PS3 users will continue to play away. Whats the failure rate now?

That´s exacty why I didn't, don't and probably will never buy a 360.
Already having a pretty decent PC, risking red or now the red and blu xmas light ring of death for a few exclusives? Nah.
At first I was considering Wii... but I´m not too shure anymore. Just waiting to see some upcoming games for Wii and PS3... those will make me finally decide.

Its even follwed by a song aparently fashioned after "We Wish you a Merry Christmas",
You wish you could find a Wii for your DS.
You wish you bought a better PC.
You even wish you bought a PSP.
But still you dont want a PS3.

@robinandtami: Not really trying to pick a fight with you but the 360 does not have ALL the games. The 360 really doesn't have too many games that you can't get on the PC or another console and the ones that are completely exclusive aren't necessarily killer apps to me. Nintendo is one of the few companies that have true exclusives on their DS and Wii, but part of that may be due to difficulty in adapting the control scheme to another sytem. Nintendo also has their Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc properties that also kind of give them an exclusives advantage. With the exception of Nintendo, it seems that most game companies are continuing to break down the exclusive barrier. It makes a lot of business sense for them.
My major concern here to me is hardware failure and reliability. It's pretty sad when retailers stop offering extended warranties on items because it isn't a matter of if the 360 fails but when. Should they be the ones to eat the cost of a product that has a high rate of failure while the manufacturer continues to produce and sell faulty machines? I do appreciate Microsoft stepping up and trying to do right by their customers after the fact, but if the machine is built correctly to begin with, it wouldn't have these problems. Sony isn't taking responsibility for their 40% failure rate because only one place has made this claim. Sony shouldn't have to own up to something that isn't true, IF that is the case. The same could have been said for Microsoft if the 360 red ring of death was an isolated event.
Bottom line is that this generation of consoles really feels like they have their own distinct personalities, which is great because they can attract consumers that best fit each console. Some people like what Microsfot offers. Some people like what the PS3 offers in terms of an HD entertainment machine. Some people like the interactivity and free online capabilities of the Wii. It's just a matter of opinion.

I bet this is a homebrew test. This is a user created program that can access the hardware LED's. No one would create an error sequence like that. Being a hardware engineer I create little test programs like this all the time when working with new hardware, to make sure everything works before trying other things.

@habib15: Wow, I'm surprised no one has taken this possibility into consideration yet... If this is the first time such an LED color combination has been seen and the video never shows the error message on the tv screen, isn't it possible that it's just a modification?

I like how you guys are going off on this based on a headline and some random youtube video when there is absolutely nothing to indicate it is a failure on the hardware other then the fact it's lighting up.
