Ultimate 1,700+ Piece OCD Video Game Collection Up for Grabs on eBay
Posted by Adam Frucci at 12:40 AM on November 7, 2007
Sweet merciful crap. A seriously obsessive gentleman spent 30 years of his life collecting video game consoles and games, and now he's selling his entire 1,768-piece collection on eBay in one shot, presumably at the command of either the courts or a lady. Just the system list is insane, not to mention the games. Check out these pictures then follow me to after the jump for a sampling of the goods offered.
First of all, the system list:
Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar, Atari Lynx, Coleco ColecoVision, Coleco Gemini, Coleco Telstar, Commodore 64/128, GCE Vectrex, Mattel Aquarius, Mattel Intellivision, Mattel Odyssey 2, Microsoft Xbox, Microsoft Xbox 360, Miscellaneous APF TV Fun, Miscellaneous Handheld Games, Miscellaneous PC Games, Miscellaneous SC Eight Thousand, Miscellaneous Sega Pods, Miscellaneous TV Games, NEC Turbo Duo, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo NES, Nintendo Nintendo 64, Nintendo Super NES, Nintendo Virtual Boy, Nintendo Wii, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Game Gear, Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, Sega Saturn, SNK Neo Geo, SNK Neo Geo Pocket, Sony Playstation, Sony Playstation 2, Texas Instruments TI 99/4A, VM Labs Nuon.See anything missing in there? Because I don't. Wait, where's the TurboGrafix 16? And he calls himself an obsessive collector.
As for games, he has, well, a lot of them, including weird rare stuff like the Christmas version of NiGHTS for Sega Saturn and the Gold Cartridge Micro Machines for NES. Gold Cartridge!!! How can you resist?
You really need to see the full list to really appreciate how bananas this auction is. Right now it's at $3,383.33, but the Buy It Now price is $10,979.00. Plus free shipping! What could you possibly be waiting for?! [Auction Page and eBay via Geekologie]

@DASHTHEHAND:
You've obviously never handled or seen a real antique book before and I don't mean a crumbling 1930s first edition of "Gone With The Wind".
Books are one point were printed on linen rag and quite durable over time.
When I was in college one of my English professors brought in an original first edition of "Gullivers Travels" by Swift, printed in 1735. Not only still legible, but actually handle-able and (VERY carefully) page-turnable because it was printed on cloth-based paper, not acid rag. I was impressed. Here was something over 250 years old and it could be passed from hand to hand around the class.
Try that with an original copy of "Star Wars" from 1977 and see where you get. Original objects, well-cared for, do have their place.

and why 4 nintendo consoles? i mean i can understand two maybe, use the other if say, you get tired of blowing in the first or shoving extra carts in there, but 4?!

@Sushiwriter: Either of those objects benefits you...how? By pointing to them saying "LOOKIE WHAT I GOTS!" I assume? The '39 Ford while being at the same time ugly, fuel inefficient, and less crash safe with all the modern marvels the 1930's offered is obviously a better choice. And having a first edition book that will no doubt collect dust from never having its "precious" pages touched for fear of grease applied or god forbid having a page torn is a much better investment than a free library card.
Good call.

10,000+ dollars of ancient equipment stored in a basement ... where it floods. that doesn't seem too smart. of course amassing this stuff is questionable as well.
that said i'd like to see him ship it off to a museum somewhere.

@styrofoam: I was going to say the same thing. Man, I loved the ol' TG16 and CD. I love that the Nintendo is bringing back some of the games.
I don't see a Turbo Express though. I loved being able to play Military Madness in the car.
@strider_mt2k: send your "extra points" and $5 S&H in for the special gold foil variant of "Teh Interwebs: ROFLMAO."

@DashTheHand:
Absolutely right. I should go sell my '39 Ford Truck because I could get a brand new shiny truck. And who in their right mind would want a first edition of a Dickens novel when they could go to the library and check out a paperback?
You do realize that there is more to an object than raw utility, don't you?

@DashTheHand: Aye, that is true. If you wanted all these machines hooked up at once (save the PS1 and other systems with backwards-compatible successors) you'd need at least a 15-foot long or 10-foot high entertainment center to hold all these consoles, plus around 4 or 5 Pelican System Selectors depending on your TV's inputs.

As for the collection, its certainly impressive, but unfortunately a modern PC makes most of it very obsolete with emulators being as good as they are. More valuable to a VG museum or another crazy that requires owning the physical medium.
