TiVo Fiddles with Nero to Build PC DVR
Why let Microsoft's Media Center PCs have all the fun? Today, TiVo announced a partnership with Nero to "develop a software solution that will bring TiVo features to the personal computer." The company claims that this is in response to the "growing PC TV tuner market," and in our opinion its a wise move. TiVo lost a lot of momentum not anticipating CableCard. Now that cable technology is getting easier and easier to move to the PC, it's not long before the demand for PC recording hits the mainstream. Replay TV and others are already there, so joining with Nero gives TiVo a solid foothold. Only question is this: what happened to Roxio? I thought TiVo and Sonic-owned Roxio had a nice relationship. The Roxio software is required for TiVoToGo on MacOS, I believe, that's why there was a huge amount of brouhaha over the TTG announcement.
For Nero, it's probably to allow burning of TTG shows to DVD like you can on MacOS?

I would be willing to pay for the software... ONCE, but not for a monthly fee to use my computer. The Windows Media Center works great with Free Guide data. So not willing to pay monthly.
But, would love season pass and remote scheduling.

@schrosa: I kinda like Toast Titanium, and it's worked pretty well for me overall.

I wonder what their pricing model will look like for the PC--one time purchase or subscription?
There's no way I'm paying a monthly fee for Tivo on the PC.
There are competitors with much more robust feature sets (BeyondTV) than anything Tivo has had to contend with in the stand-alone market and it will be interesting to see how they value their product in relation.

Yes, the only partnership that TiVo has with Roxio is that TiVo recommends Roxio to convert the transfered shows on TiVo ToGo.

@schrosa: I can appreciate your comment, but Roxio currently makes the software you need to do TiVoToGo, and legally convert recorded shows to iPod-friendly formats. It's weird that TiVo would go to its partner's rival to develop other software.

Roxio, as a software company, produces some of the worst ever.

Tivo DID anticipate CableCard. But all the cable co's dragged their feet and did everything they could to keep the CC format from being finalized and to keep gov't regulations from requiring them to provide Cablecards for use in 3rd party devices. TiVo had something ready to go and was showing the S3 back at CES 2004 I believe (maybe 2005), but what was the use in releasing a product that the content providers wouldn't provide the keys to?!
Once CC 1.0 was finalized Tivo had to release something to market, they couldn't wait for CC 2.0 (On demand, and bi-directional communication) to be finalized. Thankfully as was reported yesterday they have found a creative way to extend this functionality to their existing S3 customers. I can't WAIT to get back to the states, get my TiVo S3 (2, please) and ditch Windows Media Center.
After 6-7 years using TiVo anyone would know that WMC sucks balls. I'm excited about this new desktop software though and will definitely give it a spin when its released.

*makes Sarcasm*
"Hello, I am an ATI all-in-wonder and I have been around since 1997! I even had scheduling and the ability to record in any number of added codecs installed. With co-ax and composite/s-vid inputs I could even display and record your videogame system/handcam inputs. But the best part is, is that I have no clue what DRM is! Plus, you can find old versions of me (pci/agp) for cheap! and the new brother even does HD!"
*Ends Sarcasm*
I am not even a big fan of ATI anymore, but those cards new and old have server me greatly. =D

If TiVo sticks by their traditional model, they're going to have a difficult time competing with the open source, freeware, and commercial programs already out there, many of which offer feature sets comparable to what TiVo offers without the monthly fee or with much smaller monthly fees.

OMG, Tivo, just say no!
Nero is one of the worst "bait and switch" "no refunds" asshole software vendors on the planet. Do not associate yourselves with Nero's criminal ways.
