Thirsty Light: The Cheap Nerd's Way to Keep Plants Alive
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 1:12 PM on November 20, 2007
In the tradition of Dr. Frog and Botanicalls comes Thirsty Light, a $10 sensor that sits in your potted plant and blinks when the soil goes dry. You get to trade all that anxiety for a straightforward Pavlovian response: you see a blinky light, and you water your plant. Alternatively, there's a "quick-check" method: buy one and walk around the house with it, sticking it in all your plants. When you are done, you can even turn it off to save juice. OK, I'm sold—I'll take one. (I just noticed you can buy 12 for $84—that's how they get you: the damn volume discount!) [Thirsty Light]

they should stop spend founds researching this and try to develop the time machine, or some new kind of new shotgun, mp3 player, book reader, ipod dock, gps, hybrid car...

I've found that the Thirsty Light not only works with plants, but also works great with people as well. For example, whenever I throw a dinner party, I no longer have to interrupt the flow of conversation like a tool and ask "hey, who wants more water?" Instead, every 15 minutes or so I simply walk around the table, have each guest stand up, and shove the Thirsty Light into their butt. If the Thirsty Light blinks, I know they're thirsty, and quietly fill up their water glass without them having to utter a word.
Come to think of it, I'm surprised more restaurants don't use these things as well. Sometimes if I go to a restaurant with a friend I can tell they're thirsty but too shy to call over a waiter. If waiters were trained to constantly shove Thirsty Lights into their customers' butts, I'm sure a lot of shy, thirsty customers would be more than a little grateful!

I hope nobody uses this with plants you're only supposed to water once in a while, like succulents. Otherwise this light will help you kill your plants. Most of my plants are healthiest when watered once a month. One of them only gets water 3 times a year...any more can kill it.
