The World's Most Effective Speed Bump
Posted by Charlie White at 5:00 AM on November 27, 2007
Here's the perfect way to slow down those doggone kids driving their noisy pocket rockets, invading the neighbourhood at high speed without regard to the peace and personal safety of the local inhabitants. This Deutsch-speaking dude has created an unusually powerful gadget that will teach those whippersnappers a lesson. Profoundly satisfying. If only these expertly crafted special effects could somehow be practically translated into the real world. [YouTube]

I'd like to pick one of those up tomorrow... as soon as I get some red paint to mark out a bullseye down the road as the landing area.

Is there one camera man that does all of these fake videos, because I can count several videos where the camera movements and effects are exactly the same.

@Gizmo:
Holy crap! i just watched the "when bollards attack" thing on youtube. That's horrifying! It's a great idea but not so great in practice. I'll grant you that the first guy was a tool trying to sneak through but the one with the kid in the back seat and the other one where the guy puts his head through the windscreen... Eek. Not so good. Those tire shreders would be way safer.

@omg-ponies: I'm nto sure it matters exactly what the age is because you'll always get some idiots who are desperate to drive, will pass their test as soon as they can and then drive like maniacs.
Make the age 21, it'll still be true. There'll still be people who pass their test then assume they're indestructible.
There's a proposal in the UK that learners could be forced to spend at least a full calendar year learning to drive, or have to have at least a certain number of hours with a certified instructor.
But, from the p.o.v. of a guy in his early twenties who learnt to drive a year or so ago, that strikes me as grossly unfair as it means that even the responsible drivers lose out.
Until someone can develop a test that speeding twunts will automatically fail, there is no perfect solution.

On a more serious note, a better method of keeping kids from speeding is to restrict licenses further and look into interlocks.
A series of fatal car accidents involving teenagers in Maryland over the past two weeks raises doubts as to the prudence of letting 16 year-olds drive around in cars packed to the gills with their friends.
At the very least, how about a second look at seatbelt interlocks (with a tie-in to the retractor in addition to the lockplate) to prevent ejection deaths from rollovers.

@Step666: Which is all the more reason to bring back seatbelt interlocks. The technology exists. Quite simply, the engine shouldn't even start unless every occupied seat has a fastened seatbelt with tension on the retractor. This is doubly true in SUVs which have higher rollover rates than passenger cars.
The biggest determining factor in a rollover accident is ejection. If you leave the passenger compartment, the chances of maiming or death skyrocket. This has been proven time and again over the past four decades.

@mferrari: The fact that you want to tell commenters who have a different opinion than you to fuck themselves is strong anecdotal evidence for why you shouldn't be allowed to operate a vehicle EVER.
Tempers should have no place near the 1-2+ ton death reapers we often refer to as cars.
That's MY opinion, and I will be glad to accept the brunt of your rage accordingly, so long as you can't take that rage to a road.
FWIW, I don't care much about the age issue, but I do appreciate the idea of mandatory instruction hours in the neighbourhood of 1+ years of instruction, as someone mentioned about GB (also true for many other European nations, and for flying a plane - which is far less dangerous - pretty much anywhere).

@Gizmo: brilliant. Best video I've seen in a long while. Thanks!
@Oldbrass: So if someone has a kid in the back seat that means they can drive like the 1st tool without consequence? Its called paying attention to the road, especially the big red road signs. You get whats coming by tailgating a bus so close anyway. If anything, having your kid in the car should make you MORE careful. However, most of the crazy drivers I see all day are moms too busy talking on the phone to know that their tank just clipped another person on the highway.
The location in question implemented the stops because too many pedestrians were getting hit by idiots like those. Tire strips would just cause the car to swerve into more people. I wish they had these in NYC, would take care of most of the taxis in the first week, lol.

I see some comments saying that he driving age should be raised, & as a 14-year-old I really want to tell those commenters to fuck themselves. But, I wont, I'm just gonna tell you people that some people aren't reckless & won't cause road problems, and that would be insanely unfair to them. Think about it, most teens need cars to get to places (work, school, etc.) if you were my age wouldn't you be just a little pissed off that you cant drive & others were able to so now you have to have your work, friends & everything else near your home, cause I want a job so I can go to college & I don't plan on biking to it everyday. So, all I ask is that before you say things like that you should consider the people affected by your plans.

@OMG-PONIES: Think of it as "Applied Darwinism"...
It used to be different. When I learned to drive it was in a 1967 Ford Galaxie 500 - no air bags, no anti-lock brakes, no power steering, no shoulder belts, bench seats... Nothing to "save the stupid" and therefore you learned pretty quick to not be an idiot.
These days not only is it almost impossible to actually *die* in an accident, which creates lazy drivers, the car is also brimming with a zillion things that take a person's attention off of the thing they should be paying attention to - driving.
I'm really thankful I learned to drive back in the vehicular stone age in that 4 ton monstrosity with it's gawd-awful single-speaker AM radio you didn't fiddle with (or even turn on) and pay phones that you had to get out of the damn car to use. :)
