Steampunk Laptop Reminds Us Why Steampunk is Cool
Posted by Adam Frucci at 12:40 AM on November 3, 2007
Yeah, yeah, yeah, steampunk stuff is tired. Just add some bronze, a few gears, and we'll automatically post about it, right? Well, I'll tell you what. You take a laptop, add some bronze and gears to it, and make something as incredible as Doc Datamancer's Steampunk Laptop. I'm guessing you couldn't do it, because this thing is a work of art. This isn't merely an aesthetic overhaul, either; you start it by cranking a key to engage a "custom-built ratcheting switch made from old clock parts." It's one of the finest pieces of steampunk-customization we've ever seen. [Project Page via Gadget Lab]

I wonder how many 13 year-olds you could actually fool into believing that this is an antique laptop from the late 1800's. "It was back when Photoshop could only work on black and white images!"

Weird... I though I saw news about this laptop here on Gizmodo already. But maybe it was TecheBlog... some 3 or 4 months ago when the Steampunk news were getting lots of attention.
Anyways, very very nice. Though the laptop now must weight as much as a CRT TV or something...

@curiosa863: It's cool and infatuating for the same reason people drool over just about any custom object.
Someone did that by hand. They took something built by a machine in the twenty-first century and made it look like it was built by hand (cause it was) in the 1800s. Not only that, but as these builds get more intricate and progressive, the things that make them cool like old clock parts or nixie tubes are starting to take on true functionality. Imagine if the guy found a way to wind up the clockworks to charge the battery on that thing, or if all those gears in the top case performed some function. I bet the next person to do something like this will take these things into account, and make them better.
We all have an appreciation for things that are hand made, and when they're made really well, that's all the better.

@curiosa863: Steampunk's popular because it's got a big cachet among sci-fi geeks, and there's something cool about high-tech faux-antiques.
As for BSG, you're just crazy. Even non-geeks like that show. Unless you mean the original, in which case disliking it means you're not crazy.

@slumlord: Haha, you're right. When you open the lid this thing should at least emit a sound effect of the large medal latch being switched open and the pressure of the steam escaping, like the sound of 30 hot irons releasing in syncopation--better yet, like han solo in the carbon freeze chamber.

I don't understand the infatuation you guys have with steampunk.
It looks cool, and different, agreed.
You do post a lot of crap about it though.
Maybe this is just one of the things that I'm not nerdy enough to get into, like manga or battlestar galactica...

steampunk always forgets the most important part. the steam. this thing needs a NOS jet to spray a little out the sides when its opened. also a small motor for the gears. its the kickass tho.

Old news is people saying "Old news..." or "Welcome to 3 months ago" in the comments section. It's pointless and annoying. We all know you're the one who knows though, so I guess that was your real point.

I saw Datamancer's steampunk keyboards on eBay a few days ago, checked out his site, and saw this...I'm not ashamed to admit I felt a tingling in my nithers.
Being that the keyboards sold for damn near two-grand a piece, I'd be afraid to see how much this sucker went for.

Man, that is pretty awesome. The only thing that sucks about it is that once you get the thing cranked up and running, Windows starts and ruins the whole experience. Instead of Windows XP he needs Windows SP (Steam Punk edition). Now there's a novel concept.
