Star Trek Home Theatre, Go Where No Man Has Left Before
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:13 AM on November 7, 2007
This Star Trek TNG home theatre is ubergeek in the absolute best way, which is probably why at CEDIA 2007 it was named the best theme theatre installation. Featuring a quasi-faithful re-creation of the Enterprise NCC-1701D, motion activated "air-lock" doors and an alert button producing an alarm and flurry of red LED lighting are enough to keep us entertained even if, say, the theatre were only 720p.
While the owner wishes to remain anonymous and we lack specs on the complete setup, the piece de resistance has to be one of the largest Kaleidescape hard drive storage systems in the world, with eight servers holding 3,816 DVDs. We'd probably be too busy drinking at the bar full of scifi memorabilia to watch our choice of Hilary Duff films, our minds blown at Robby the Robot hanging out with members of the Federation. @Terc: I wasn't aware that Sony had ever manufactured an SXRD device that wasn't 1920 x 1080. I'm pretty sure the Qualia line (Sony's hideously expensive first generation SXRD equimpent) was all 1080p as well.

My favorite feature is when the room shakes and throws everyone to the floor.

screw the bridge and its fancy schmancy screen, if this were mine I'd be hanging out in the holodeck.

Missing: the voice-activated control system.
"Computer, dim lights; set tempurature to 72 degrees; display all movies starring Patrick Stewart."
"Displaying"
"Computer, play the one where he was Locutus of Borg."
"Ready to play."
"Engage!"

Wouldn't it make more sense to take all the time, money, and effort spent building that setup and invest instead in some social skills classes. At least then you'd have a half a hope of finding a pretty lady to watch movies with instead of sitting alone in your ST themed home theater?

If/when I build a Star Trek home theater, no matter what Trek I choose, one thing for certain is that I'm going to have a captain's chair with the master controls in the arms. None of that "controls on the center console" crap; I am the damn captain, damnit.

I wrote this story. This isn't a "Next Generation" theater. I just personally rank TNG as one of the best Star Treks ever -- and gave this theater that same title. Sorry for any confusion.

Can we get a new "extremem nerd home theatre" setup? The star trek theme has been done so many times. Wheres the space balls home theatre, or the jetsons home theatre?

If it is a TNG theater then it is a recreation of the Enterprise D. The Enterprise A didn't look anything like that

135" screen? That's way too small for a room that size.
Also, I would have had the sequential blinking lights along the bottom of the screen.
And the room is pretty narrow... looks like they were trying to fit it into a space vs. building the right space around the theater.
Actually, the real bridge would have made a nice theater, two seats in front, five behind, and the rest have standing room behind the wooden semicircle.
