Staples Offers Seagate Data Recovery Service in all Stores
According to Informationweek and Computerworld, Segate has inked a deal with Staples that will bring data recovery services to all of the retail chain's 1400 stores. The deal will allow users to reclaim their lost data from any type of digital media, regardless of brand or condition. After a free evaluation, the experts will determine whether or not the data can be salvaged and what fee should be charged for its recovery.
The data recovery will be done on site unless the problem is particularly tricky — in that case the device would be sent to the Seagate lab. Turnaround times are expected to be 3-5 days for smaller devices and a week for large devices. The recovered data will be presented to the customer on a Seagate USB device, or a 6GB Seagate pocket drive depending on the amount of data recovered. In the event that the process fails, the customer will not be charged.
The Staples / Segate partnership definitely sounds like a great option for anyone who isn't in the habit of backing up their vast porn collections. However, until more pricing information is made available, it is hard to tell whether this presents a cheaper alternative to other services out there —although it had damn well better be a better option than the f'ng Geek Squad. Comparing it to geek squad...
Geek Squads In store price $99(Up to 9 GB Data)-159(Unlimited)
Level 1 Data Recovery $259 (Deleted data)
Level 2 Data Recovery $519 (Formatted/corrupt/ but still spins)
Level 3 Data Recover $1540 (Drive serious malfunction, doesnt spin, fire, flood, electrical, or drives with RAID configuration)
The thing with the geek squad is that they have always been able to recover data at their clean room. its just with how much it costs. I wouldnt be too quick to trash the geek squad as they have extremely high success rates and deal with a larger number of repair jobs than any competitor.

Depending on how you lost it (power surge, fire, etc), file a claim with your insurance carrier. They pay for this stuff all the time, and in some cases even "business interruption loss" if its work data.

This is why you save porn to flash drives.

If I ever have a drive not filled with financial data, business plans, and yes, porn, then I'll think about sending it to Staples for recovery someday. Until then, important info gets CD'ed or DVD'ed.

Sure so we have data recovery by the company that just shipped thousand's of Harddrives with trojan viruses that sent your info to China? Let's hand em our hard drives now and see where that data ends up.

I've been considering offering a basic level of this at my work through the company newsletter. There are 4500 people in the company - most have no idea about computers, and was thinking about $100-$150 for a working drive. No data no charge.....

Staples has been offering this for weeks. Basically, it's $300 if we can do it in the store. $1000 if we have to send it out, but the drive still spins. $1500 if the drive is totally dead. And there is NO attempt fee. If we can't get the data, you don't pay a dime.

You know, there's more to the internet than just porn. Normally I'd follow a statement like that up with some facts, but I've got to go surf porn.
