Sony Enters High-End Cable Game
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:37 AM on November 13, 2007
Sony has just announced a new line of premium A/V cables. Constructed from 24-carat gold plated connections, triple shielded wires and, of course, impressive but merit-questioned 99.996% oxygen free copper.
Their available products include Digital HDMI, Component Video, SCART, Optical Digital Audio, Coaxial Digital and Stereo Audio cables coming in 1, 3 and 5 meter lengths—or too short to notice in most circumstances, but mainly regarding that HDMI cord. Sony reminds home theatre enthusiasts that 15% of their budget should be spent on wire—we're recommending you buy a really cheap home theatre to accommodate. [sony via mobilewhack]

Are the Sony HDMI Cables Certified to 1.3a, & how do they compare to brands like Monster, Belkin & Kordz HDMI?

So what is the very best HDMI cable for my Sony high end HD LCD,BD Player & Amp?
Is it Sony, Belkin or Monster?

@xAnarChisTx: No, it's SCART. It's a European A/V plug that is actually a good idea. It's too bad they don't have it here. Wikipedia holds the rest of the answers.

@kbarrett:
I think the owner of Pear Cable just shat himself. His "engineers" are going to be in for a long week.

Oxygen free copper is just a scam.
If they really wanted perfect conductivity, they should be using solid gold wire cooled in liquid helium.

@xAnarChisTx: I think you are correct, that does look like the 360 multi out!

I'm shocked that all box stores don't have their own brand of premium cables. I guess the margins are so high on Monster Cable products that they're not thinking about the huge branding and markup possibilities.
The only way I'd pay more then online prices for quality cables would be if a person came to my house and custom made the cables right there for my setup. Now that would be worth the money.

how about including HDMI cable on PSTRIPLE instead?
it claims HD and yet it uses cable from last century...
what's up with THAT?

Do their "HD" cable only handle 1080p? Because, you know, 1080-progressive... is the true definition of HD.

15% of my HT budget should be spent on wire...
And two months salary on an engagement ring...
Oh consumerism, thou art a greedy bastard!

@theelk801: Actually SCART isn't so great... It of similar picture quality to composite, and the plugs often don't sit right because the cable is so inflexible.
HDMI is the natural digital successor that can do all the SCART stuff in HD quality and doesn't need the hosepipe guage cable.

15% is idiotic, but you can't blame Sony for going after the ridiculous margins in that business. FWIW, Belkin is making some great cables at completely reasonable prices for those that don't trust monoprice.com (who make awesome cables at very cheap prices).

Why wouldn't you trust monoprice, though...
