Sony Announces Extended PSP Battery Pack
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:45 AM on November 29, 2007
The irony about the new PSP Slim is that while it gets twice the battery life, Sony shrunk the battery capacity in half...defeating their own engineering. While modders have been sticking old, larger PSP battery packs in new PSP Slim models, Sony has decided to make the whole idea official.
Their new extended battery pack is 20% larger than the original PSP battery at 2200mAh, and comes with a special PSP replacement cover to accommodate its larger size. Running about $45 when it's released in December, the extended battery will keep PSP slims running for 10-12 hours...which is almost enough reason for us to upgrade our PSP and our battery pack. I've been using the bigger high capacity PSP battery in the new PSP without a cover. It's quite a snug fit and doesn't fall out especially as your hands hold it in place anyway.

@Noobs-R-Us: Considering that this battery has even more capacity than the original PSP battery, they probably couldn't find a cost effective way to make a battery the size of the new PSP battery with the same amount of power. Also, their main concern with this is probably to make it so that all users can have this battery. If they made the battery smaller, then it would not work in the old PSP because it wouldn't stay in place. Besides, it's not like the battery is huge. It's just a small bump that you would notice. If you don't like the product, don't buy it.

Now cram a 150GB HD in there and we're talking!

@Noobs-R-Us:
Actually, the thing is that the current slim-line PSP has the same battery life as the old PSP. With the old PSP battery, you get twice the battery life of the slim-line battery.
I don't know why people are pissed about this... they've been doing the same thing with cell phones where the main selling point of the phone is that it is SLIM. I mean, my wife works for Sprint and she says the number one selling accessory in her store is usually extended life batteries for phones like the Katana 2.

Why on earth would I want a big ass battery that sticks out? They should find a way to put that extra capacity into the same amount of space just like the old fat PSP.
Back to the drawing board SONY!

I have the old PSP and I really don't understand the complaints about battery life. Sure if you're playing video and/or using the WiFi and you have the screen on full bright, the battery life is about 5 hours, but I feel like I get at least double that in ordinary gaming use. Of course more juice is always better, so this is a welcome addition to the new Slim. Not something worth upgrading for in my opinion, but something worth getting for those who have it already.
