Solid Gold Louis Vuitton Flash Drive Trimmed With Your Choice of Ostrich or Alligator
Posted by Jennifer Hooker at 3:22 AM on November 10, 2007
Luxe designer Louis Vuitton is designing a USB Flash drive for geeks who need a side of haute couture with their gadgets. The thumbdrive features a sexy curved body, and will be made of white or yellow gold with ostrich or alligator accents. Like the designer purses, the flash drive manages to incorporate Louis' signature lock into the design, as it requires a key to release the locked cap. I'm not sure if this provides any added security, since the key dangles from the device itself. The concept will also include either a digital or an analogue clock as well. No word yet on storage capacity, availability or doubtlessly exorbitant cost. [Newlaunches]

people don't flinch when it's leather on business / computer equipment, so why do people get squeamish with exotic animals? I think the answer is that we don't closely associate LEATHER with COW like we do when we say something is lizard or ostritch skin. If it were cowhide, with maybe an utter attached to it, people would be freaking the hell out. But the dead cow doesn't really care WHICH parts we use of it.
That said, these kinds of products do seem to have a carnal, "look-what-i-killed" kind of effect, sort of like a caveman wearing various disembodied sabre-toothed cat parts

LV purses have lock and keys so people can't pickpocket as easily, but this is clearly just useless. In fact, I doubt it's actually made by LV at all.

Both Ostrich and Alligators make mighty fine watch bands too. I personally like shark skin bands though...
Sorry, off-topic.

That is so ugly. The curved body and key won't work very well for laptops. In about 3 months the capacity will be a joke. I use USB drives as throwaway devices and hate carrying one around with me.
I can see a mobile phone casing made of precious metals, once the mobile phone market matures a bit. But a USB drive? Will most techies still be using USB drives in a year?
What's next, a solid gold disposable camera?

Either that key is really small and flimsy or else the device is the size of a banana.
I agree, Frigg, that there is no point in stopping with skin. Do ostriches or alligators have balls?

Nothing says class like a device that is curved to block all lesser devices from having USB port access.
Oh, a lock and key?
Now THAT'S data security OLD SCHOOL!

It is kind of creepy that a flash drive includes parts from something that used to be a living animal.
Flesh drive?
Not that I have anything against eating ostrich or alligator, but it's just a wierd juxtaposition to combine it with memory. And beyond that, if you're going to put animal parts on a flash drive, why stop at the skin? For the ultimate in high fashion, why not paste more cherished organs onto your drive, or to be more device-appropriate, at least a chunk or two of brain matter?

i just cant understand why designers such as LV are making themselves involve in creating geeky stuff, they should stay the hell out of it and just create f'ing expensive clothes instead! *sigh*
