Sling Media to Show Ads Over Slingplayer?
Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:12 AM on November 3, 2007
Based on the information contained in a Sling Media patent, it may be possible for the company to send you ads over their popular Slingbox media players. Specifically, it would be possible to send ads to the user's computer, display ads in fromt or behind the media stream, ads may be sent through a phone call, fax, traditional mail, or displayed through a text ticker at the bottom of the program content —among other methods.
The patent goes into quite a bit of detail on the subject, but it is important to note that as far as anyone knows, Sling Media has not made any plans to use this technology. The patent simply illustrates that they could if they chose to do so —although it would probably be akin to suicide. [Patent Application via Sling Community]

I would guess it's more of a push by the current owner of SlingMedia, DishNetwork. They did buy them right?
Plus doesn't Sling already broadcasting commercials? The ones you view when your watching a live TV show?

Could it not be possible they are patenting it so that no other service will do it? Maybe I'm just being sickly optimistic because I just barely got one for my dormroom...

@CEOself: The patent application well pre-dates the EchoStar acquisition, and one of the names on the application is Blake Krikorian, Sling's CEO/co-founder.
Makes sense to me, the content can be something other than ads and it can be delivered out of band - so there could be a simple link in the SlingPlayer UI, not necessarily something stuck in the video.

That's not what people paid for. Sure they might be able to but I don't see them doing it unless they really want to hurt their product (especially with rival products like Sony's coming... or already in the market)

Maybe they are keeping it open to offer a different service - one with ads, but a cheaper sling
