Sarcos's Exoskeleton is More Amazing Than We Thought
Posted by Haroon Malik at 4:45 AM on November 26, 2007
We have had our eyes on Sarcos for quite a while, as they are the wonder kids that have been promising us super powered exoskeletons. Well, true to their word, they have just released a video of a prototype exoskeleton in action; the result is simply amazing. The device will primarily be made available for military use, allowing soldiers to breakthrough conventional barriers of human endurance.
The exoskeleton promises to make a difference to many areas of military and civilian life alike. As demonstrated in the video, soldiers will be able to do what they need to for longer. Meaning a soldier's efficiency will be greatly increased. The further applications are yet to be tested, but refined models should be able to assist those with physical disabilities, not to mention the possibility for a commercial edition. I wonder what the price will be? It'll surely be worth every penny, did you see how the arm floated upwards? Awesome. [LiveLeak, Thanks, Elvis. P]

Wouldn't battle damage turn you from superhuman to human carrying three hundred pounds (or however much it weighs) of dead weight? Problem exasterbateded by making the solider a larger target and less trained.

Haha, got to love exoskeletons.
I for one am fond of them (non-robotic kind) cause when I broke my back, was walking three days later. But ya...
If when you leave the exoskeleton it goes and keeps fighting, how are you supposed to get back in it? I don't get that part... The thing runs faster than you, is stronger than you, and is loaded with massive guns, and you are supposed to just get in it?
Sounds cool, though when it goes rampage I think I may be purchasing a few EMP's.

This is exactly what I need to take on the Queen Alien that has taken over my garden shed.
I can't see this entering combat roles for at least another decade (if not several), but as is right now, it could be immediately implemented in military support. Average Joe just slapping one of these on and being able to repeatedly lift 100 lbs by himself for more than 10 min would be awesome.
Just don't give it to baggage throwers, those bastards damage enough luggage without the ability to throw it into orbit

@rockboy04: That's dumb. Why would soldiers be less trained? And adding a couple of inches onto a soldier isn't going to matter. Not in the slightest.
When they produce these, they will be an astonishingly effective weapon. Think about it. You've got something roughly the size of a person that can run an ENORMOUS weapon into place, set it up, fire it, and then move almost immediately.

@ElementalDragon: Any really heavy ordnance has a base of some sort. Considering how strong this thing can be, all you'd have to do is plunk the base down, hoist up the weapon and you're ready to fire. Carrying the ammo hopper, this could be A 1 person 50 Cal. machine gun team.
Or by the time this thing is ready for production in like 10 or 15 years, they'll probably have made that lovely boeing laser small enough to tote around. Armoured laser troops zapping baddies from 2000 metres away with silent, recoilless magic god guns.
This is the American military dream. Of course, then America will invade every country on the face of the earth but really, that's inevitable anyways. Team America! (If I say that now, maybe you won't laze my future family).

probably one main problem with having someone take it into battle with massive weapons. it can carry them, yes.... but firing them? if you're talking about something like you'd expect to see on a mounted platform or something like that.... or a handheld form of mobile artillery.... you'd also have to devise some way of reducing kick. would suck to be in an exoskeleton holding an artillery cannon.... on your a** half a second after firing it.

No one has made an Exo Squad comment yet? I know it wasn't nearly as popular as a lot of mainstream mecha movies and shows but c'mon it's an exoskeleton and the show is called Exo Squad.
I bet that the initial military utilization will not be in front line roles based on the one comment in the clip about "loading 200 lb missles". I could see it being used to load up artillery or ordinance onto planes and stuff.
Now imagine hooking this up with a larger missle/canon type weapon and including some sort of targeting computer, you'd have man portable heavy artillery. It'd be freaking sweet.
