Rock Band Instruments Hands On (Verdict: Quality, but Can Your Livingroom Take the Mess?)
Posted by Brian Lam at 1:23 PM on November 21, 2007
While the gaming press leaves you with impressions of the king of all rhythm games, Rock Band, I'm going to tackle the hardware, which the Best Buy in SF had plenty of as of this afternoon. Let me start out by saying that the gear looked smaller on the internet; I'm too old to have toy instruments cluttering up my living room. I guess that leaves lying about them being MIDI devices, since I'm not getting rid of this stuff any time soon.
Guitar: Vs Guitar Hero 3's Wireless Axe, the Rock Band wired guitar has far better neck action, feeling less like a toy, a set of closely placed buttons up near the body that function identically. The neck is slim as a real guitar. The button presses happen with little throw, and don't click. The strum bar doesn't click either, but there is a notch at the end that feels more like strumming a guitar string than the GH3 guitar. I like it a lot better. If you haven't heard, the GH1 or 3 guitar can be used with Rock Band but not vice versa—that's important for your bass player.
Drums: These things are huge, but as something you have to assume emo gamer teens and slightly overweight Chinese American bloggers are going to beat on without much pause, it strikes the right balance between being sturdy and compact. I just wish it had a folding mechanism for throwing it into the closet when non-gamer friends come over. Pads are coated with a nice rubber surface, and the kick pedal doesn't mind if you rest your feet on it. There's a controller in the middle of the setup, so you can navigate menus before sets. The drum sticks are cheap, but whatever. (Here's a post we did that shows you how big the set is and how you can take it apart for storage.) P.S. I suck at drums. P.P.S. Drums are way better exercise than Wii Tennis.
Mic: Heavy enough to please me. Don't like the dongle at the other side. I'd like a headset so that I can be like Cher or play guitar/drums while singing. Tip, you might have problems getting the mic to detect. Either a patch for the game or restarting the console with the mic in it, and switching to the console from the USB hub fixed it. (More on the hub in a bit.) BTW, this looks identical to the mic included with Karaoke rev for PS2. That one seems to work with Rock Band.
I neglected to mention the included powered USB hub the guitar and drums plug into. Really annoying that you need another AC adapter, but what USB doesn't have, USB doesn't have.

@dangerousNS:
My post was less in response to you, and more in reply to the entire idea that these musical games are "gay". I play guitar (in real life, even) and a bunch of my guitar playing friends give me crap about GH and the like. I saw that on here there were people saying similar things like "Learn real guitar".
Funny thing is, I bet a lot of kids will want to learn real guitar after playing these games. I think these games will be a real gateway into music for a bunch of people, which is the company's ultimate goal (aside from getting really rich).
I also play baseball and football, and also enjoy those video games.

It's really pathetic to hate Rock Band instruments because you can play the real thing. This game rocks; drums are awesome; guitar could have been a bit more challenging.

Best thing about the drums in the 30 seconds I've played with them is that the actual pads feel like a practice pad called 'real feel' and makes it very comfortable to drum on.
The best sticks I've ever used for pads like that have been vic firth Terry Bozzio series sticks.
They should be available at your local music store. But try looking for jazz drummer sticks as well, they have smaller 'heads' on them and make for very easy drumming when trying to get around those things.

@ SCHRUTEBUCK I agree with you 100% this shit is going to collect dust and a few years, its a fucking fad that I am not going to be a part of.
I have a Wii and I have over 50 games for it now, fun games, not a game where I am looking at lines and dots waiting to get the timing right. You think I am going to play rock band when I can play manhunt 2 or mario galaxy, HA.
Again, I will keep arguing that all this stuff is crap. A guitar is fine, but guitars, microphone, drums, why not a fucking blowup doll (inflatable groupie included!) If you like music so much buy real fucking instruments, at least you proclaim that you play REAL music with REAL instrument. "Yea I play drums, but only on rock band." People will laugh. "Oh instruments are expensive" boo hoo you penniless shit turd, if you can spend the money on this you can save up for the real shit. If I am going to play a video game its going to be a great game, not a fucking sim of real life, that goes for these shit ass music games and sports games (excluding race cars.) I know A guy who is buying PS3 only for FIFA, I am sure he will buy other games but to purchase a PS3 for a sports game..fuck sports they suck, wake me up when you're done. Same goes for rock band, of course this will sell because everyone is addicted to music, it dictates our lives. And you know what I am going to say I am better then you becuase I can play drums, guitar, bass, saxophone, piano, and violin, and guess what, all using real instruments. Guitar hero fine, dueling guitars is fun, but this game is too much. People are hyped up on hype, people want it becuase they will look cool, its the thing to buy and own, that is all that rock band has going for it. Yes I really want to play a video game constantly showing lines and dots on the screen and I have to time it right, yes that is exactly what I want to watch while playing a video game. Mind numbingly dull (regardless of how many beers you have cracked bud.) I say fuck this game.

@poisonfist: That might be the single best thing about the GH series. Before GHII there wasn't a game I could sit down and play with my girlfriend, now she's started actually beating me head to head. Maybe I'm alone on this, but there are few things hotter than when a girl genuinely beats you at a videogame. Now if I could just get her to start playing halo...

So I picked up rock band last night...and I have to say, the reviews posted here were DEAD on. The single player on guitar is nowhere near as much fun as the GH2 version...the lack of encores and making the crowd noise really go insane etc really holds it back.
That having been said, the drum kit, even on single player, is absolutely amazing. I love it - great time...and the game really does shine when you hook up the hub, get 3 other people together, crack open a case of beer, and go to town. Nothing like hearing my wife screech out "dead or alive" after a few.
And to the flamers...what's worse: people who enjoy a good game that happens to involve instruments, or people who spend time posting about how lame they think it is? Seriously, you're taking the time to post that? Can we say loser?

@erichg14: & @huygir:
I'm reading gizmodo on a Wednesday at 10am. I obviously don't think of myself as having a "killer social life." I never insulted the "rhythm" games for not being enough like real life either. I merely said I don't like these games - I just don't enjoy playing them. They are too slow paced and I prefer faster paced games. For example, I like playing sports games, racing games, and shooting games. These games also imitate real life, but I find them to be faster paced and less repetitive. Some might find the rhythm games to be really fast paced and not at all repetitive, but I don't.
So you can say I'm flaming, but I never insulted anyone or anything just to annoy anyone. I am here as part of the voice of people who just don't like these games. We find them to be lame, and we find the people who like these games to be lame. + South Park is sick.

Uhhh ... you know what's really pathetic ? I'm getting this for Christmas and my old band from when I was in high school are coming over to play it (and watch some football) on New Year's Weekend. We're all 35 - 36.
Now THAT is pathetic. But it does go to show how appealing these games are.

Playing guitar and bass is one of my hobbies. When I was a youngster used to play in a jazz band (which name was The Ataris.. nothing to say about the members 'geekness').
As someone said, playing this videogame is just a different thing. There are professional tennis players who play with Virtua Tennis. The same applies to soccer games or driving games. Why on earth wouldn't a musician get fun with this toy?

I've been playing the guitar (classical and steel string) for 18 yrs, the flute (yes an f'in flute) for 26yrs and the Japanese traditional Taiko drums for 17yrs and I must say that playing these games are fun in a totally different dimension. I enjoy playing the Guitar Hero with my wife who is usually pretty conservative. Being very classically trained in music (Piano) and the love of Opera, I first had doubts that she would enjoy GH but she immediately got hooked to the game. If it weren't for GH, she would never ever play a Playstation game with me. I also have played Taiko drums professionally and yet, the Taiko drum games in arcades in Japan are truly fun to play. It doesn't replicate the actual playing of the instruments but has its own challenge (which I sometimes feel that playing the actual instrument is easier). This is why I think it's a moot point to tell people to go pick up an actual instrument.

Heh. I'm a guitar player and I don't think it's "uncool" or "looser" to play some Guitar Hero.
Logic fails. Guitar Hero is about having fun with friends... much like DDR, or other rhythm games.
Would be the same as going to a Battlefield game article and shouting something like "GO JOIN THE ARMY AND SHOOT SOME PEOPLE YOU GIANT LOSER".
Also: most people who have grudges against music games are failed musicians... right or not?
Anyways, I need Brian's job! Give it to me Brian? Pretty please?
How else will I justify buying those? Or look cool to non-gamers while having those on my living room?
I bet Brian always says stuff like "It's a living..." or "I only buy this stuff because I have to write them articles" to his non-gamer friends. XD

As a drummer of 23 years, I give this game 2 BIG mutha truckin thumbs up! It is way cooler than I previously thought it would be, and justifies to friends and family why an adult playing video games doesn't = loser. The drum pads could use a bit more bounce to them, but that's just splitting hairs.
@ DAVEZATZ You can plug the drumset directly in to the 360. No need for the hub if there's only 1 or 2 peoples.

@SchruteBuck: It's just a game......don't make such a big deal out of it. Not everyone wants to spend months or years trying to learn how to play real instruments.
I do happen to play real guitar and real bass, and a little bit of drum, and I think the drum set on rock band really comes mighty close to the real electric drum if you ignore the fact that there's no cymbals and hi-hat. Might even be good practice for hands and feet (for bass drum) coordination, but if you're really serious about it, you'll want a real one anyways.

@Daimyo Nintendo: Ahh... you ain't playing Manhunt on a Wii my friend. And if you have 50 Wii games you must be a 5 year old girl, bacause about 40 of them have to be High School Musical / Petz / Disney Princess type games.
As for me, I play real games (like Mass Effect, Jericho, Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty 4, etc.) and I got Rock Band Wednesday and had my neighbors over last night, and we had one hell of a time. Yes, drinking was involved, because we are all over 21.
But it's about the most fun I have had with a party game ever. I played the drums, and they are extremely cool, and one hell of a work out (6 hours straight and you get some leg cramps from the kick). I kind of doubt we would have had the same good time with Mario Party 8.
Now go get some juice for your sippy cup and go back to playing your Mario Galaxy.
