Rip Saw UGV Tank Fast as a Motorcycle, Yours For Only $200,000
Posted by Adrian Covert at 8:46 AM on November 18, 2007
First introduced in 2005, the Rip Saw is about to hit the market with a $200,000 price tag. The custom-built UGV can hit 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, go 80 mph, and can manoeuvre over any surface or terrain a tank can. And the video is pretty good; watch as it drives through a barn as if it were the cardboard boxen your handset came in.
The privately-funded Rip Saw was first built by the Howe brothers for the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. Though the Rip Saw didn't win, its video certainly turned some heads, enough to find funding to build more than one. I normally don't get too excited about military shit like this, but any machine that can obliterate a wood shack with ease and turn donuts on snow wins my heart. Check out the 2005 teaser vid to see what i mean. [Howe and Howe via Red Ferret via Geekologie]

I just want to point out what the competition was for the tank...two trucks. Probably modified trucks...but trucks all the same. Trucks vs. Tank.
Hmmm...no surprise who one :P
Btw, I think that the Rip-Saw is awesome, and I'm very impressed.
Wish they'd put it up against something more its caliber, so they could really show it off.

Only thing I'd worry about in that would be tipping.
But that would easily be rectified if it was widened.

I checked with someone on Tartan and he tells me that while it's a neat vehicle, they never got the sensing parts working too well, so it didn't function that great for that particular competition. However, I just want it myself to run over things.

the Darpa Challenge is for an autonomous not RC automobile. That means when you hear that big V8 roaring down on you, there is no human compassion to make it not want to run over you :) Sweet dreams.

A few modifications and I bet this thing could even be used as a boat.
A really usefull all-terrain vehicle I must say. Too bad I don't have 200,000 bucks lying around, this certainly sounds like something I'd drive around.

i'm tryin to imagine a small army of these things, all armed with long ranged automatic 50 caliber weapons, armored (or course), and advanced radar and sound systems that could be easily operated by the man driving it
the sad thing is i bet it doesnt have the armor on due to the weight dampening the speed significantly. Be that as it is however, this vehicle concept brings novelty to the idea of light weight tanks.

I'd think any tank could do this if you removed the armor, ammo, all weapons. Heck I'm sure there are tanks in our military that can do this now fully armed right?

That thing is friggin cool! I'd love to have it for the acceleration alone! Flyin thru fields in that thing would be great. As for the weaponry, it probably wouldn't take much to make it a great hit-n-run vehicle if you could kill the sound a little. Of course, depending on the situation, that badass 'Merican V8 noise can be just as intimidating as staring down a large bore weapon. Shock and awe indeed. Me likey.

You must be pretty weak if you took that long to rip open boxen.
As a concept it seems cool, but that unit wasn't armored or armed, wasn't carrying ammo, nor has it been field tested in battle conditions.
Get back to me after all that's done.

Not a tank so much as a jacked up snowmobile.
And I would like to see the 0-60 times after adding at least as much armor protection as a BFV has and at least some kind of armament like a .50 cal or a TOW.
The potential for this thing is probably in the role of lightly armored scout in conditions prohibitive to the use of helicopters or UAVs. Hell, it looks like it only seats one person; but in all honesty this is not how our budget should be spent. The fact is that at the speeds it is now capable of there are many other vehicles that will do the job and are about as damage resistant as this thing will ever be unless they load it out with some much plate that it is no longer able to move at evasive speeds.

If this thing is RC that would suck... you could get a four-wheeler for a couple thou and mod it for tracks i guess...much cheaper and you actually get to RIDE IT.

I can somehow imagine some forest ranger somewhere convincing his boss they need like 50 of these things. You know, because a pickup just can't barrel through a shack without showing at least a little damage. Okay okay, I shouldn't be so sarcastic. I actually love the thing in all it's purpose-built ugliness. That vicious growl would probably be music to my ears if I were a stranded hiker, hunter, or downed pilot in some god-forsaken place a heli couldn't land. Problem is, if you can afford this thing, you probably should be looking at your own helicopter instead. Unless you really dig a $200k tracked ATV. Unfortunately, I do dig it.........I gotta be rich.

@Collins1: Not so much a "sports car" with cat tracks, more like a monster V8 in a minimalist roll cage, on cat tracks. Than can go though small buildings. And do donuts. And make small children poop themselves.
I'm pretty sure that the only explanation for the sheer amount of Awesome this vehicle contains is that it was invented by Chuck Norris, and he's just letting these guys build it because it's too hard to roundhouse kick someone in the face as you're running them over inside their own house at 60mph.
