PS3 is Getting DivX; PS3 is Getting Better
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:39 AM on November 14, 2007
Good news, downloadable porn DivX fans! DivX has announced today that they are currently testing the PlayStation 3 before adding their final certified stamp of approval to the device. While we'd seen rumours last week, now it's confirmed that DivX is coming to the PlayStation 3.
Details are scant, but interested PS3 owners will first have to upgrade to the recently released firmware 2.00 before downloading the still unreleased DivX decoder itself. DivX gets a major bump in living room support, while Sony continues to blur the lines of entertainment console and multimedia PC. Once again, we wonder why Sony didn't do this sooner. But once again, we're happy nonetheless. [infosyncworld]

Isn't it strange that Sony made the 'PS3 to play divx' announcement first and Microsoft adds it to the 360 without much ado..... Hey, Sony there's only a few weeks till Christmas, if the PS3 plays divx before then sales numbers will jump !

For me games are important first and media playback second. I would prefer a high definition game console with better graphics but at the same time I don't want it bogged down with too much copy protection. I don't need Blu Ray. At least Microsoft's XBox 360 gives you the option of getting the system with or without the HD DVD attachment disc drive. With Sony it is not an option to get a PS3 without Blu Ray.
Particularly I don't like Microsoft anymore than Sony because of their customer service and anti-competitive business practices. My only choice then of a good games console that puts games first is Nintendo. I like the Wii and play it a lot.
I have never owned a PS2 but would like to own one next year if and when the price in USA drops to $99 I hear they are dropping the price to $99 next year in Europe and Japan but no word yet for the North American market including USA, Canada etc.
I think a $99 PS2 in USA would be great. I'll buy it new even if the hardware in the PS2 is old (that is I'll buy a new model of the PS2) even if the hardware they used is older than the PS3. I will absolutely not buy PS3 because of Blu Ray DRM shenanigans and lack of great quality games but am willing to use Sony's older PS2.

Can the 360 connect to a media server? I still use XBMC to play movies via workgroup share. I'd be happy to get rid of my Xbox if my 360 could replicate XBMC's functions.

@torched: I wouldn't say "any" USB hard drive, because I believe it has to be formatted to FAT32, but if you're speaking strictly size, I have my 350GB external hooked up all the time.

@chillywilly: That is what DLNA compliant servers like Twonky, Tiversity and Nerohome are supposed to be all about, and until last Thursday it was working great. Thanks to 2.00 it has turned to crap.

@ CHILLYWILLY: Tversity. It's pretty easy to setup and once you think about the role of a media server, it really makes sense.
But the big pain is on the fly transcoding. If the PS3 takes care of xvid along with the mpeg and avc formats it already knows, that's gold jerry.

Before they add this, how about they fix the stuff that Firmware 2.00 broke? Since last Thursday I can no longer strem MP2s and MPG4s to the supposedly-DLNA compliant PS3 from my home server. I went to quite a bit of effort to set everything up and now everything is innaccessible or screwed up. I'm really pissed about this - and of course the Sony customer support was of no use (they pointed me to the totally content-free www.dlna.org)- the PS3 is supposed to play the AVCs natively, but now it really only works with crappy transcoding.

SWEET.
This is fricking awesome.
I can't wait.
This will completely illiminate the need to re-encode most videos that people watch.

just found another reason to push me towards the ps3 once iptv and pvr functionality hit it...
with yellow dog linux [www.terrasoftsolutions.com] on your ps3 you will be able to play pc games on your ps3 over the network.

This is good news. Now we just need someone to make it easy to connect to the PS3's hard drive over the network (ie. map a drive to the PS3 from your PC or Mac). If there is already a solution for this, I am not aware of it.

@prodigal_son: very interesting. reasonable price. in theory you could just watch it on your tv via the ps3. too bad i'm in canada, maybe one day.

@EMoShunz: [anytime.sky.com] if you are a customer of Sky in the UK or Ireland, you can use their "anytime" service, which allows you to download and play any of the films they show on your pc. I am led to believe that the Divx Codec (with the right drm) will decode them..
Its 100% legal, and they have a ton of hollywood flicks. [anytime.sky.com]

@huggy: all it's missing for me to jump on is pvr and iptv. not interested in ps3 gaming, i have a wii, but with all the other stuff, i'd be totally on board. if i saved like $40 a month on t.v. expenses, this thing would more than pay for itself in a year.

While this is cool, how is this a "major bump" in living room support? Exactly what percentage of living rooms out there have a PS3?

@ NOOBS-R-US
question; doesn't the PS3 support external drives? I mean, wouldn't it be possible to hook up a 500Gb external usb hard drive to the PS3 and watch your divX files from there?
Now I've been looking for an excuse to get a PS3. I'm not into gaming at all, in fact I have a PS2 lying somewhere which I've never really used. But a Blu-Ray player and a DivX player with HDMI 1080p output in the ame package? Sounds great at $400!

@ImTheKing: that's what i mean. the movies there are not hollywood movies at all.
then there are dozens of sites like [www.themoviedownloads.com] that claim to get you a subscription to legally d/l every movie in the world. however, read the disclaimer and it says they only provide you links to get the movies, it's up to you to have the right to legally d/l them.

This question was asked in the rumour post, and I'd like to bring it up again. Other that backing up your own dvd's to divx, is there anywhere you can legally d/l divx movies (real movies, not those user-made ones) for a cheap rate?

Finally! I hope they put in subtitle support also with this! Good job Sony, I guess Xbox users will also soon reap the benefits of the competition going to divx...win win situation for the end consumer.

Now they do it after I went out and bought Divx player to hold my Divx media!
They should also change the firmware to allow for larger drives because 80GB is not enough space.

I guess this is great but it still doesn't fix the buggy software, lack of games, and ridiculous price tag. If their whole reason for such a large price tag is because of blu-ray then maybe they should have supported HD DVD since you can buy an HD DVD player for 100 bucks. I don't think bringing DIVX support to the PS3 will help sony much unless they start to fix whats already wrong without adding more things to screw up in the future.

@BMErdin:
Yes. You can use it as a media center extender, but that will limit the file types you are able to play, but there are several other options you can go with. You can go with a transcoder, or you can go with something like Orb or TVersity.

@Noobs-R-Us: The PS3 has supported larger hard drives since launch, I have a 120GB in my PS3 right now and others have even larger drives, it can be swapped by the customer and the manual even had instructions on how to do it. So in other words RTFM
