OQO to Launch "Something New" on December 3
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 2:14 AM on November 24, 2007
We just got a mysterious invite to a party in swinging London: an "exclusive pre-launch unveiling" of a "significant Anytime/Anywhere Computing" product. God only knows what it could be. The pic above, which came in the e-mail, depicts the popular OQO model 02 UMPC—called E2 in Europe because of the O2 cellular carrier. We're told this is not just an update to the 02, but "something new." What do you suppose it could be? [OQO]

Isn't it fairly obvious? The one thing from OQO that the UK (and the rest of Europe) is missing is some form of cellular data... and given that, what seems like, an ice-age ago OQO were playing with an HSDPA equipped Model 02 (at some 3G conference in Spain IIRC) I think it's a fairly safe bet.
Annoying thing is, "it doesn't have 3G data" was my main reason *NOT* to buy one. Damn.

Anone notice the CEO's name? Not THE Dennis Moore, of Monty Python highwayman fame?
"Hand over all your lupins"
(sings) "Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore, dum de dum da night......"
Maybe this is all a big joke after all.
@RainyDayInterns: O2 isn't just an iPhone-type-functionality device. you can attach it to a full size monitor and keyboard and use it like a "real" PC, but then stick it in your pocket and use it like an iPhone on the journey home. The 02 is the ONLY non-Apple piece of hardware that I want very much...except it runs Windoze.

Maybe whatever it is, is UK only anyway. IF it was US, the announcement would be here - its probably a Vodafone modem equipped OQO2.

We have been REALLY trying to find a reason to buy one of these things (and/or the Sony UX) to replace our 3 year old Sony Picturebook. However, no matter how much we tried justifying it, we can't seem to pull the trigger on the purchase.
Paying $2k for what we would basically use an iPhone for (websurfing on a small screen, email, etc...) just doesn't seem to be worth it. Anyone out there with a real world use-case for the UMPCs?

Huh, I'm guessing a Windows Mobile addition to 1 up the HTC Shifts so called Snap Vue.
But IMHO the only impressive things they can do is drop the price below $900 or match the Everun's battery life.

@Fishd: Yeah, I'm guessing HSDPA support too. BTW, the recessed space on the batteries is probably designed with a SIM card in mind, as in this HSDPA mod [farm1.static.flickr.com]
